the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 101 no 29 tuesday february 15 1994 all the lehigh news first pledges learn pros and cons about greek life by andrew j cooke assistant news editor sex drinking hazing discrimi nation scholarship self-respect pride brotherhood and sisterhood will kcim the campus minister from oregon state university spoke wednesday to the new members of the fraternities and sororities about the good times and bad times they might encounter in the greek system keim has spoken to over a million students at over 500 campuses and has kicked-off the pledging season at lehigh both this year and last with his speech sponsored by the interfratemity council i'd like to think that students who become greek who have been accepted into a noble tradition of leadership brotherhood sisterhood community service scholarship and a great social life would not practice racism sexism elitism homophobia and poor scholarship he said keim believes that pledges will leave lehigh better men and women than if they had not been greek he also said he was sick of people put ting down the greek life just once i want to hear some body tell another when they are asked why they became greek to tell them i wanted to be somebody just once he said keim had seven points that he wished the lehigh students would follow during their life at college the first of which was scholarship if right now you're not spending 60 hours on your job and right now htttin the slopes baw photo by david baker snow snow and more snow lehigh's campus is converted into a ski resort as andy volanakis 97 takes advantage of the winter weather the university was closed friday once again delaying the spring semester already burdened with saturday make-up classes open mic night returns by geoffrey s colon news editor white cloth and white candles donned the tables in the dim-lit room the aroma of coffee wisped in the air as the tables filled with more and more people to the point where every table was filled to capacity no this wasn't a fancy dinner out on the town in a popular restau rant but the cozy atmosphere of open mic night the third of this year open mic night was hosted by the creative arts house saturday night in the lehigh cafe created last year as a program in the creative arts house open mic night consists of students singing playing guitar or reciting poetry to their fellow students in a jubilee of fun creativity and originality bear sebastian 96 a resident of the arts house and master of ceremo nies for the first half of the event liked how different types of people showed for the event people come out of the woodwork for a free-for-all sweet creativity buzz the night opened with keenan brock 95 and chris burgess 96 doing acoustic versions of beatles songs life goes on and i saw her standing there claudia micklas 95 said i en joy the atmosphere the talent and the vibe it's good clean fun micklas said she was not per forming anything on saturday but said of the future i would really like to do something musical for the next one even if it be old mcdonald she noted the lack of diversity or new events on saturday as a reason for preparing for the next one she said there is not enough mixture of things the same people perform the same type of stuff i also know a lot of people who are talented that don't baw photo fry marc calabrese chris lemmon 96 joins in the activities at open mic night wellness center sells condoms by chris cococcia news writer valentine s day sparked the sales of carnations singing valentine's balloons and of course condoms the annual national condom week sponsored by the wellness center was back on campus again to promoting safe sex lehigh has launched a campaign for distributing condoms among stu dents condoms were sold daily from feb 7 1 4 in the grace lounge in the university center national condom week was a great success at lehigh more than 230 condoms were sold for a small profit this is almost double of what was distributed last year even though they were distributed free of charge in the past students seemed to ignore awareness week but this year involvement increased significantly news 1-6 s sst^w-'by science pages 7-9 hhmm^h pp-j iack 15 wrestling i<j men's basketball lehigh loses to fordham 94-72 . see sports page 16
