the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 101 no 4 tuesday september 21 1993 all the lehigh news first bike-a-thon to benefit low-income housing habitat for humanity sponsors event to assist families unable to finance conventional housing by learie carasco news writer habitat for humanity will host its fourth annual bike-a-thon on sept 26 at dimmick park in hellertown the bike-a-thon has been the organization's chief fund-raiser in recent years with all proceeds going toward building homes in the lehigh valley the past three events have proved highly successful raising over 47,000 for the habitat cause founded as a christian housing ministry that provides ownership of homes to low income families habi tat for humanity helps both chris tians or non-christians who are work ing but cannot make conventional mortgages those who qualify help build their own homes with the assistance of volunteered labor and donated materials this enables them to complete their required 500 hours of sweat equity there is no mortgage interest so people can afford the homes said marlene oren board director of habitat for humanity most people are paying less than they were pay ing for rent the reason for this non-interest mortgage is because of volunteered labor and donated materials and land board said this eliminates escalating in terest which enables themto receive a home for half of the market value board said most importantly they own their home this year's event will feature 10 25 and 50-mile rides which will depart at noon from dirhmick park the 10-mile route may be re garded as the family course because it is the easiest and least strenuous of the three courses the 10-mile course is relatively flat and better for inex perienced riders the 25 mile course will be more of a challenge because there are a number of hills of varying degree and difficulty however the 25-mile course provides enjoyable scenic venues along the route those more advanced cyclists who desire a greater challenge may want to attempt the 50-mile ride this too has its share of longer and harder hills as well as beauti ful scenes as it travels through salisbury saucon and milford townships participants can take advantage of the sag wagons and aide stations with juice and water which will be located along the route volunteer staffing will be sta tioned at various checkpoints along the countryside routes the event organizers are hoping that this year's ride will prove as successful as the previous three what ever comes in we appreci ate board said the trexler foundation will be donating 38,000 habitat will also be receiving donations from the covenant church we don't take any thing from the government because there are always strings attached board is it live or is it virtual late night at lehigh sponsored a virtual reality demonstration this weekend ia grace lounge allowing students to experience new environments simulated on computers the system made by virtual images inc differs from other current virtual reality systems because it incorporates computer graphics technology which has been developed for use in the defense industry the system that was brought to lehigh this weekend involved two players who stood inside a game pod which housed the com puter system a player-controlled console and a helmet which created a three-dimensional image according to virtual images inc the first scenario features a street corner of a futuristic city block with several tall build ings todd gaffney 96 left is seen here taking a walk in the computer generated landscape stationary cars and hedges located in the virtual world make good hiding places inside a room of one building is a trans porter that will transport the player stu dents joined earth and environmen tal science professor edward evenson in a journey west this sum mer to study nature's physical pro cesses in the hands-on manner of the annual geology trip the trip began as the students professors and teaching assistants boarded seven vans june 6 outside williams hall to begin their cross country trek the group which ranged from sophomores to seniors was com prised of earth and environmental science 41 and 341 students although the two classes trav eled together they received differ ent lectures and were taught by dif ferent professors each student headed into the trip with only one duffle bag a knapsack and a tent to sleep in the trip began in sandusky ohio where the group spent the first night after its brief stay there the group moved on to
