traditional christmas songs at 9:00 the group retired to drown americans eligible for british schools six weeks course will cover wide range of regular medical data about six hundred places will be reserved for american students at summer schools to be held by seven british universities during july and august 1948 the schools are open to all and will provide an opportunity for american stu dents to meet the students from other countries each course will last six weeks the subects will range over a wide field covering literature history economics education and post graduate work in medical and sci entific studies the courses will be held at widely separated centers all of which are well placed for field trips this will be the second time that the schools will be held last year's courses being considered successful the schools are intended pri marily for graduate and teachers who have made some previous study in the subjects offered but in some cases undergraduates in their junior or senior year with special interests or academic train ing will be able to attend at some universities special assistance will be given to students prepar ing theses in their subject all the courses will be residen tial and arrangements will be made for students to live either in colleges or in university hostels although food is still rationad in britain there will be adequate food for the visitors the cost of the course includ ing tuition and maintenance for the six weeks will range from 240 to 264 dollars port to port trans portation for american students will be from 328 to 448 for the round trip students who complete their courses to the satisfaction of their tutors will be given a certificate of attendance credits which are obtained can by previous ar rangement with the registrars of their own universities be trans ferred to the student's home col leges education commission issues report admission to college should not be based on racial background economic religious racial or regional background should not prevent any qualified individual from attaining an education ac cording to the report issues by the presidents commission on higher education for american democ this commission appointed by president truman is composed of 28 civic and educational leaders the group recently issued the first of a series of six reports designed to reform backward tendencies in institutions of higher learning so that by 1960 their capacities of en rollment may be expended to meet the demands of a projected fed eral education project the first two years of college should be made available to ev ery young american on the same basis as four years of high school a system of scholarships and oth er financial assistance should be made available to all qualified ap plicants for senior college and pro fessional schools the question of the legality of federal aid is at tacked from the standpoint that federal aid in education is as im portant as federal aid for internal national defense expansion necessary the report holds that already crowded schools and universities will have to further expand their inadequate facilities over a period of years to come this will involve moral as well as physical expan sion the commission's recommen dations involve giving students a broader conception of their place in the community and an aware ness of the problems of other in dividuals it should be noted that more progressive communities on the west coast have long been working toward such goals but that our backward conservative east has fallen ring costing between 25 and 30 an appeal was made by the epi tome staff to all 48 men who haven't yet made their 8.00 sen ior assassment the success of the yearbook depends on these men getting their money in as soon as possible after the official business meet ing was adjourned the seniors let loose mr kirkpatrick university treasurer consented to display his talents on the piano while miss jennifer marshall got the party headed in the right direction with the singing of some old time fav orites these were enjoyed by ev eryone however a few of the in dependents decided it was time to sing songs more appropriate for an all male beer party everyone add ed a verse or two of their own and miss marshall was forced to retire to the rear the beer ex pected to last the entire evening was children combined glee clubs supply entertainment at first annual affair the lehigh university intex fraternity council played host to 55 children at the council's first an nual christmas party held last night in drown hall the children were from wiley house a chil dren's home located on broadway between bethlehem and auen town during the course of the eve ning the children were served ice cream cake and milk they were also each given a stocking filled with ice cream to take home with them glee clubs sing dick fuehrer offered his services and entertained as a magician frank bantholomew of the col legians dance band along with wil liam shaffer and ed hall played christmas carols for the group later the combined glee clubs of moravian college for women and lehigh university also sang carols james duff chi psi and inter fraternity council president pro vided the christmas spirit when he appeared dressed as santa claus and distributed gifts to the guests the gifts were donated by the in dividual fraternity houses each of which gave two appropriately wrapped and tagged with a child's name each guest received a gift the party was planned and ar ranged by a committee composed of charles foster alpha chi rho bill breck psi upsilon and noem seim chi psi the faculty was represented at the affair by president and mrs martin d whitaker and chaplain and mrs bean the children were accompanied to the party by miss brigham su perintendent of wiley house the caroling which was under the direction of gertrude barnes of the music department of mora vian and william schempf direc tor of music at lehigh marked the first time in history of the uni versity that an organized group has gathered on the campus to sing carols many of those who heard the singing expressed the hope that the activity would be continued in future years as a tra ditional part of the yuletide cel ebration hall where they entertained the orphans who were the guests of the i.f.c parties for local youngsters highlight festivities at lehigh by jack lyons though the highlight of the pre vacation christmas festivities on the campus was the i.f.c party for bethlehem orphans wednesday night other celebrations during the week made this one of the most impressive christmas festivity weeks in the history of the univer sity theta alpha chi rho and lamb da chi alpha held special parties in their fraternity houses for bethlehem youngsters youngsters treated ten boys from 7 to 12 years of age atended the christmas party at phi delta theta games were played following which the lads were treated to a turkey dinner and moving pictures santa claus presented gifts to the little guests of honor who were secured thru the family welfare association seniors all seniors who have had their pictures taken pick up scheller . fuehrer was the magician for 55 children summer session in 1948 pres martin d whitaker an nounced today that an eight weeks summer half semester and a six weeks summer ses sion will be presented by le high university next sum mer no dates will be set for these periods by the director of sum mer sessions until he has met with the curriculum directors if council plays santa to children combined glee clubs supply entertainment at first annual affair the lehigh university intex fraternity council played host to 55 children at the council's first an nual christmas party held last night in drown hall the children were from wiley house a chil dren's home located on broadway between bethlehem and auen town during the course of the eve ning the children were served ice cream cake and milk they were also each given a stocking filled with ice cream to take home with them glee clubs sing dick fuehrer offered his services and entertained as a magician frank bantholomew of the col legians dance band along with wil liam shaffer and ed hall played christmas carols for the group later the combined glee clubs of moravian college for women and lehigh university also sang carols james duff chi psi and inter fraternity council president pro vided the christmas spirit when he appeared dressed as santa claus and distributed gifts to the guests the gifts were donated by the in dividual fraternity houses each of which gave two appropriately wrapped and tagged with a child's name each guest received a gift the party was planned and ar ranged by a committee composed of charles foster alpha chi rho bill breck psi upsilon and noem seim chi psi the faculty was represented at the affair by president and mrs martin d whitaker and chaplain and mrs bean the children were accompanied to the party by miss brigham su perintendent of wiley house the caroling which was under the direction of gertrude barnes of the music department of mora vian and william schempf direc tor of music at lehigh marked the first time in history of the uni versity that an organized group has gathered on the campus to sing carols many of those who heard the singing expressed the hope that the activity would be continued in future years as a tra ditional part of the yuletide cel ebration hall where they entertained the orphans who were the guests of the i.f.c parties for local youngsters highlight festivities at lehigh by jack lyons though the highlight of the pre vacation christmas festivities on the campus was the i.f.c party for bethlehem orphans wednesday night other celebrations during the week made this one of the most impressive christmas festivity weeks in the history of the univer sity theta alpha chi rho and lamb da chi alpha held special parties in their fraternity houses for bethlehem youngsters youngsters treated ten boys from 7 to 12 years of age atended the christmas party at phi delta theta games were played following which the lads were treated to a turkey dinner and moving pictures santa claus presented gifts to the little guests of honor who were secured thru the family welfare association seniors all seniors who have had their pictures taken pick up or return proofs to don ald mccaa 1222 west union boulevard before the christ mas holidays any man who has paid his senior assessment and not sub mitted a questionnaire go to the arcadia office
