the brown and white vol 100 no 36 lehigh university friday march 26 1993 reunion planned for black latino alumni by holly jackson news writer the lehigh university alumni associa tion will host its first annual lehigh univer sity black and latino alumni council lublac reunion tided rekindling friendships tomorrow lublac which established itself this past november is made up of black and latino alumni whose purpose is to serve the interests of the undergraduate gradu ate and alumni community of lehigh uni versity their main goals are to increase recruitment and retention of black and latino candidates provide support and assist in career planning and placement bret talbert assistant director of le high university s alumni association said there have been many positive changes concerning diversity at lehigh over the last 25 years in 1989 there were only nine black and latino faculty and staff members now there are 22 talbert said this year's black and latino under graduate population at lehigh is 163 and although it may not seem like a lot it repre sents more than a 150 percent increase from 10 years ago he said healsosaid thatrecognizing thesechanges and the need to support this growth is an other motive of the council which is why this reunion is so important the first annual appropriately named rekindling friendships is not only a cel ebration to kickoff lublac but also an opportunity for all black and latino alumni of lehigh to enjoy the friendships they have made as students talbert said in addition everyone will have a chance to get involved and make a difference in shaping the future of this important organi zation the reunion will feature interaction with prospective students that will take place in three buildings from 10a.m to 1:30 p.m rathbone hall will serve as the meeting ground for registra tion campus tours and lunch from 2:30 p.m to 8 p.m the event will mother-daughter relationships . . . donna barkman an actress and producer read selections of women's poetry in chandler uilmann hall on wednesday see related story on page 6 student senators satisfied with term by lori mccarthy news writer we are the voice of the student body and it is therefore our responsibility to do our best to express their opinions in a way which benefits everyone ken hoexter 93 student senate president as the fifth student senate pre pares to come to a close with elec tions for new members being held next week members discussed what goals and achievements they have fulfilled during the last year they also discussed what they hope new senate representatives will try to accomplish in the fu ture overall members felt that dur ing the past year they have earned the respect of students faculty and administra tion as well hi as becoming |; amorerecog | nized institu tion on cam pus malcolm f||s gould 94 jj chairman of : the social policy com pi mittee said that although iil many of the senate's goals have been lofty and all-encompassing they have been extremely suc cessful we as a senate took the initia tive and a step up as student leaders on this campus gould said with goals ranging from in stalling newspaper recycling bins and bike racks to attempting to alleviate social strains resulting from the new interfraternity council b yob policy this years senate has been extremely suc cessful since this senate went into ef feet in april 1992 many accom plishments have be made includ ing making funds available to keep the library hours extended also student parking was made available behind the university center senate has been successful in recognizing and allocating over 100,000 to more than 130 clubs for the future members hope that as the senate becomes more widely known the student voice will become incresingly influencial sen ate president ken hoexter,'93 encouraged senate mem bers to work hard for changes and additions they want for the univer sity what ever you want can be done hoexter said we are the voice of the student body and it is therefore our re sponsibility to do our best to ex press their opinions in a way which benefits everyone elections for the 1993-1994 senate will be held monday march 30 from 7:45-11 a.m in rauch business center from 1 1:45-2 15 p.m in the uc grace lounge and from 2 15-4 p.m in maginnes hall on tuesday march 3 1 they will be held at the amnesty international club formed from ashes of psa by jennifer lev news writer imagine a government that persecutes people because of their race religion and beliefs ameri cans fortunately do not exist under such a govern ment but people from many other countries have to live with such fears some students at lehigh decided they wanted to help in the fight so they joined amnesty inter national it is an organization that works impar tially to free prisoners of conscience defined as men women and children imprisoned solely for their beliefs race or ethnic origin who have neither used nor advocated violence they also push for fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners and to abolish torture and ex ecutions deana didio 96 said our club wants to educate people on what human rights are because here in the united states we take them for granted too much this is the first year amnesty international is an official club at lehigh it was formerly the progressive student alliance it's a pretty big responsibility and psa did not have the time needed because they have too many other commitments didio said the purpose of amnesty is to free all those who are prisoners of conscience and to abolish the death pen alty this is accomplished by getting in touch with governments and institutions we write letters to government officials and pris ons that have prisoners of conscience didio said the letters ask for fair and prompt trials for the see alumni page 17 what place does religion hold on college campuses ? page 9
