the brown and white vol 100 no 16 friday november 6 1992 lehigh university clinton mchale beat incumbents lehigh students and faculty respond to election new administration by court harson assistant news editor bill clinton was elected the nation's 42nd president tuesday as a record number of voters turned out to end the republicans ' 12 yearlockonthe white house the president elect called his triumph a clarion call to face the challenges of the end of the cold war and the beginning of the next century clinton 46 is the first democrat to cap ture the presidency since jimmy carter in 1976 clinton and vice president-elect al gore 44 constitute the first all-southern ticket and the youngest presidential team in u.s history clinton consistently ran as the messenger of change and said wednesday in little rock aik , the voters that ensured his election victory were a remarkable coalition for change on the night of his victory clinton ap peared at a celebration at the old arkansas state house in little rock and spelled out his goals for his administration to restore growth to our country and opportunity to our people he said to em power our own people so they can take more responsibility for their own lives clinton's victory speech echoed his key theme throughout the campaign the arkansas goveittoroftenrefened to himself as a"different kind of democrat and promised to rejuvenate the sagging economy he also called for wel fare reform and tough crime laws said i wednesday he i hopes relations with i american allies like i britain and france i continue to prosper i in baghdad iraqis i celebrated president i i bush conceded the election to clinton in a televised speech before midnight on tues day and gracefully congratulated the presi dent-elect i wish him well in the white house bush said regardless of our differences all americans share the same purpose ross perot appeared at a party with his this election is a || clarion call to face the 1 challenges of the end of || the cold war and the |§ beginning of the next i century bill clinton president-elect of the united states supporters in dallas at 9:30 est on tuesday to offer clinton his congratulations perot told his supporters to channel their energy toward making clinton's administration woik the texas billionaire did not rule out the possibility of running in the 1996 election and â– hinted that his united we stand grass-roots organization could be a third parr clinton won with 43 percent of the popular vote while bush got 38 percent perot won 19 percent more than any third party candidate in modern times despite the close popular vote clinton won the election with 370 of the 538 electoral college votes bush received 168 and perot took none clinton carried the entire northeast west coast and most of the industrial midwest he carried a smattering of mountain states and southern states including arkansas and gore's home state of tennessee bush won key states like texas his adopted home florida and north carolina he also carried indiana vice president dan quayle s home state several southern states and much of the farm belt the election attracted the highest voter turnout in twenty years eighty-five percent of registered voters or 1 04 million americans cast ballots this marks a reversal of the recent trend of voter apathy apart from the change in the white house both houses of congress will remain in demo cratic contol but will have many new faces in the senate the first native american and first black woman were elected to seats illinois democrat carol mosely braun and colorado democrat bennighthorse campbell will serve in washington next year the senate will also welcome six women - its highest number in history california's two senate seats were won by women democrats dianne feinstein and barbara boxer this is the first time women climbing her way fitness marguerite feldman 93 works out on the stairmaster one of the more popular exercise machines at ihelehfgh fitness center in taylor gym s&w photo by le3ue satin reduced library hours proposed at senate by roswitha graser news writer a plan to cut library hours next semester was proposed at the student senate meeting tuesday the senate wants to change the proposal that was made by berry richards director of university libraries richards said i am proposing the reduc tion of library hours that will minimize hours and save 10,000 in the library's budget the result of the proposal would close the fairchild-martindale library at midnight sunday through thursday two hours earlier thanitnow closes bomfairchild-martindale and linderman libraries would close at 10 p.m fridays and saturdays under this pro posal the media center at 5 p.m on fridays and saturdays and the chrysler library mountaintop campus at 5 p.m monday through thursday we'd like the students to voice their opinion about this subject and raise a ruckus said ken hoexter 93 president of the sen ate cutting library hours is a problem that will affect the whole student body if some thing isn't done before the proposal is final ized hoexter said the proposal came as a surprise to hoexter and others in the senate and has created conflict this is because comments made by mark erickson director of student life and marsha duncan vice president of student affairs suggested the administration would first consider the needs of the students when making budget cutbacks the senate suggested other ways of mak ing the library cuts to richards but she believes that cutting hours will be the fairest way of minimizing the effects of these bud get cuts on lehigh you should cut the staff size down in stead andrea breyley 93 said richards said the library is currently having difficulty staffing all necessary positions until 2 a.m lehigh is facing major budget cuts within the 1992-93 and 1993-94 school years the library's budget is being reduced by at least 40,000 this school year and 100,000 in the 1993-94 school year by cutting library hours you are cutting out a place where students go to study jordan bamett 93 said they don't neces sarily need the books in the library but the quiet all the senate members believe it is im portant to keep the library open as late as see clinton page 6 see senate page 6 * '. â– â– â– â– â– â– â– ...-â– â– :â– :â– .. — 'â–
