the brown and white vol 99 no 47 tuesday may 5 1992 lehigh university they say it rose by amy mulligan harson addressed the crowd say ing yo i say yo to you the time has come the time has clearly come he continued and especially in this time of horror and hour of remorse — when group against group race against race — is rubbed into fiery consumption we all need some special measure of leaven levity and commonhumanity what we need is that it all may rise up to rest again in unity the energy behind the levitation crowd rallies against king case verdict violence by kara villamil science editor a cross-section of the lehigh community defied the campus reputation for apathy friday gathering to protest the verdict and the violence that are the talk of the nation and the world nearly 200 students faculty and staff of all races attended an impromptu rally to condemn the verdict in the case of los ange les police officers accused of police brutality against motorist rodney king the crowd whose size and diversity sur passed organizers expectations spoke out against the verdict and the violence and racial tension that have resulted last year the actions of officers accused of brutalizing king were caught on video tape causing most to assume before the trial that a guilty verdict was nearly certain but when the 12-memberjury in a wealthy community outside los angeles county re turned a verdict of not guilty angry mobs rioted in the city's streets lighting fires and looting stores as of monday the death toll from the riots totaled 51 with thousands of arrests fires and injuries reported in los angeles and cities around the country peaceful demonstrations similar to the b4w photo by jason stanford james mclntosh professor of social relations speaks out at an impromtu rally on the uc lawn thursday student resists attempted robber by marc j goldstein described as a high school-aged male police report that the assail ant then asked the student for his wallet the student reported to police that he thought the assailant had a pocket-knife the student knocked the assail ant to the ground and reported the incident to the police slip and slide the freshman quad was abuzz with activity this weekend beginning with a clam bake saturday night jointly sponsored by student activity council and late night at lehlgh although the band ynot was only able to get through three songs be fore it began raining the clams hotdogs and lem onade were enjoyed by al most 500 students it was reported that the crowd ate 900 pounds of clams sunday afternoon hun dreds of students listened to the sounds of campus band the path and ate hotdogs and hamburgers grilled in the drinker house parking lot by gryphons and hall direc tors from the three build ings students like colleen doyle 95 and michelle ferrettl 95 slid down the hill in front of richards house on a large sheet of plastic that was sprayed with water see rally page 2 see levitation page 4 mechanical engineers build successful first attempt page 7
