the brown and white vol 99 no 42 friday aprimo 1992 lehigh university students support d.c rally by lara cohn stuff your face assistant news editor chanting we will not go back ' and what do we want choice when do we want it now approximately 45 lehigh students joined at least 500,000 protestors sunday in washington d.c to voice their opinions on abortion rights the abortion rights supporters marched from the white house to the mall near the capital hoping to impress lawmakers with their opinions as the supreme court considers a pennsylva nia case casey v planned parenthood that could limit a woman's access to an abortion members of the lehigh pro-choice society and the progressive students alliance gathered with women men families of all ages and backgrounds at what was perhaps the capital's largest abortion rally and one of the largest rallies ever seen in washington beth-anne guthrie 94 a member of the pro-choice society said she had been to many rallies before and this was by far the largest she has ever seen at a time when i fear that this most fundamental right is going to be further limited it was an empowering experi ence guthrie said among the marchers who came from all over the nation were two presiden b4w photo by jason stanford the annual pie and greeker-eating contest was held wednesday in beta theta pi fraternity's parking lot as part of greek week-springfest 92 see photo spread on page 3 b&w photo by sarah spiers vlckl miles 92 walks as part of sunday's pro-choice rally golden arches made possible by rezoning by kara villamil science editor and aries c keck assistant news editor a pair of golden arches may soon light the way to bethlehem's southernmost entrance the rezoning of a five points property from residential to commercial by bethlehem city council tuesday may pave the way for a fast food restaurant probably a mcdonald's the property at the corner of wyandotte and dakotah streets has been the subject of much con troversy at recent council meetings due to residents complaints about potential safety and aesthetic problems but when it came time for the final vote only councilman paul calvo opposed the zoning change it will do little to improve the quality of life in the area he said tom malony the lawyer for owners lester and sherri miller said any commercial venture on the property v/ou\d benefit the soulh side a position echoed by the six council members who approved the change miller currently operates a used car lot on part of the rezoned site under a waiver but applied for the permanent rezoning after beginning a search for a willing developer malony said afterseveral plans fell through the owners reached an agreement with a fast food company which plans to erect a restaurant on the site we decided we had to find an organization that would be willing to be a pioneer on the south side malony said this restaurant can really be the impetus the catalyst for additional development be it residential or be it commercial but five points residents and those who live near other bethlehem fast food establishments said a mcdonald's or other restaurant would be an eyesore and a nuisance a fast-food chain at this location will impact the area negatively said ferdinand brenner of 2004 mary st in bethlehem brenner addressed council because he lives 400 feet from another fast food chain citing litter drag racing loud car stereos and broken beer bottles on his property brenner said that fast food restaurants lower property values they become hangouts for teenagers after football and basketball games some council members disagreed saying any commercial venture on the nearly empty site would be better than nothing and that the south side's economic recovery depends on the initiative of in vestors such as the millers this does more for the area than leaving it residential and undeveloped said councilman otto ehrsam 53 councilman jack lawrence said it's certainly going to produce jobs councilman richard szulborski added it will remove a blighted area in our city see rally page 4 lam man hear me roar a look at the men's movement page 9
