concert to the delight of the packed stabler arena crowd see lifestyle section baw photo by jason stanford tailgate policy to curtail parties by anne weitzman brown & white assistant news editor the new tailgating policy taking ef fect this saturday at the first home foot ball game of the season has instigated much student resentment on campus each group with 30 or more people now will be required to register their party and appoint a person m charge in addition everyone must enter the game by the 1 p.m kick-off the new tailgate rules and procedural changes are backed by athletic director joe sterrett he said people are making too much out of the new policy this week we want people to learn what is unreasonable and what is not sterrett said urinating m the creek and throwing-up are unacceptable the purpose of the change is to im prove the atmosphere on goodman campus for the three hours before home football games encourage game atten dance and to protect tailgaters sterrett said the reason for the registration is so that we know who to go to m the tailgate area if there is a problem and who we can ask if they want help m controlling it this new policy could lessen confron tation between the police and tailgaters sterrett said in the registered areas sterrett and his security people will be walking around not the police for your benefit you should register it is the be havior that brings attention to the par ties if there are a few people spoiling an otherwise well-behaved group we can address that but when the police come m and have a suspicion of underage drink ing they will start carding people and that can certainly lead to arrests the polky is not aimed at getting people m trouble or spoiling the pre-game par ties according to sterrett if you go to the game and tailgate and behave and enter the stadium at 1 p.m you will be fine that's the bottom line people will be admitted to the game if they arrive late the athletic department wants to have the parking lots emptied when the game starts sterrett said but added if you are simply arriving late you will be admitted sterrett met with the interfraternity council on tuesday night to talk about the group registration procedures if there are groups of 30 or more that missed the wednesday deadline for registration and still want to register they may contact greg schulze director of athletic facili ties at 758-4306 social policy draws mixed reactions by amy mulligan brown and white news writer the new closed party system has brought mixed reactions from non-greeks brodhead resident adam stonitch 94 said i think it's a pain m the butt both for the brothers and for people who have to wait m line stonitch said many of the fraternities use the bracelet system to discriminate fraternities are more likely to give a bracelet to a girl than a guy he said j.d simpson 94 said sexism is definitely there women can get m and men can't i have been passed by girls many times m lines however some student evaluations of the closed party system are positive off-campus student alissa rothman said i think it's just the same as last year as a sophomore i know people so i can get m places cindy roberts a gryphon m dravo said i don't see it as a problem the girls on my hall have no problem getting m she said my whole hall has been put on lists because they've met people jeff goldberg president of the inter fraternity council said he is very happy with the fraternities progress m trying to implement the policy i think we're making a lot of progress but we are not where we want to be yet he said goldberg said the ifc tried to change the social policy m order to make it more effective in the first three weeks they at tempted to master the bracelet part of the policy but they did not emphasize the lists this leniency led to the student body thinking that this was how it was going to be however this is not true he said at the last ifc meeting the house presidents agreed to start enforcing the lists goldberg said the only problem is students struggle in tough job market by elizabeth fischer brown and white news writer the season of job hunting and interviews has arrived at lehigh and many seniors m the college of arts and sci ence feel they're getting the short end of the stick many of the on-campus in terviews sponsored by career services focus on majors m the college of engineering and applied science and the college of business and eco nomics in addition the sept 12 job fair was geared mainly for students m those areas i went to the fair to see what companies were repre sented and didn't find any that were relevant to my field of study said lisa yogel 92 a psychology major ive never been so excited to apply to graduate school this feeling of neglect is prevalent among many sen iors m the college of arts and science lori heiss 92 an english major said lehigh doesn't focus any at tention on the needs of those students whose majors don't lead them down a clear-cut path i have to look for op portunities on my own it's really disheartening to be an english major at this school marilyn mackes director of career services said this feeling is common among arts and science students but ca reer services also offers help to the liberal arts students mackes said she is not in sensitive to the needs of the b&w photo by mike york
