cannot do much to make lehigh's hills more acccssablc to the handi capped they are making structural changes so the buildings on campus can be tony corallo assistant vice president for fa cilities development said the university may look handicap unfriendly to visitors but it is a lack of awareness as well as funds not compassion physical changes around campus are evident of a new handicap concern automatic doors are now located at pete's arena the entrance of fairchild-martidale library and the side entrance of chandler-ullmann hall corallo cited plans to create easier access into buildings elevators which have lower operating panels and accessible cabs ramps curb cuts for access from the streets to the sidewalk he also indicated plans for increased handicap parking and cataloging with signs and pamphlets these areas to let those who need to take advantage of these developments aware of their location once you get into a building there are no signs or indicators to the location of handicapped bath rooms or other facilities corallo said corallo believes cataloging the changes made around campus will help alleviate some uncertainty and guess-work for the handicapped lehigh has always taken an individual outlook on the special needs of its handicap patrons the needs of any individual student faculty member or employee have been fulfilled when made evening gary sadavage a graduate student said he was carrying his girlfriend on his back behind dravo when a security offi cer told him to put her down i was approached in a physically in timidating manner he stopped about two inches from my face sadavage said sadavage said ritter asked if he was trying to be a tough guy sadavage said he backed up to put space between them but ritter closed the distance again he said when he asked ritter if he was trying to be a tough guy ritter said statements like that could get your mouth broken an investigation into the incident is under way by campus police sadavage said he is concerned about the police conducting the investigation i feel uncomfortable about police inves tigating their own he said if an officer threatens some body the matter should be handled sev erly sadavage said he felt campus po lice lt edward shupp wasn't treating him respectfully when questioning him about the incident i was under the impression that he lt shupp was on the offensive sadav age said lehigh to end silence of campus crime by anne weitzman brown and white assistant news editor john smeaton assistant vice presi dent of student affairs said lehigh will begin to release all incidents reported to campus police to the public since 1989 lehigh has been releas ing only those police reports that re sulted in arrests including names of students through the office of media relations but now smeaton said we will also include all incidents reported to campus police without the names of those involved the new policy comes in response to pressures that began five years ago when a rape and murder of jeanne ann clery on lehigh's campus sparked a campaign to disclose crime and police reports of students at universities nationwide for greater awareness of campus crimes the change in policy smeaton said allows the university to provide infor mation on all incidents while still pro tecting the privacy of all involved lehigh and many other colleges jus tify their restricted disclosure of crime on campus under the umbrella of the federal family educational rights and privacy act also known as the buckley amend ment in recent years however there has been pressure by organizations such as security on campus founded by howard and connie clery to promote greater awareness of campus crimes the clerys of bryn mawr campaigned for the pas sage of the federal student-right-to know-act which was signed by president bush in november 1990 and requires universities to report all campus crimes dating back eight years howard clery said this is a good step but he would like to see full disclo sure of student and campus felons the clerys are working toward a revision of the buckley amendment we expect that to be amended this year he said lehigh spokesman william johnson said many schools throughout the coun try have been wrestling with the conflict ing requirements of the buckley amend ment and the student-right-to-know act according to johnson there is a committee in washington d.c that is trying to reconcile the opposing legisla tion we have been stuck between the pro verbial rock and a hard place said smea ton while having to satisfy the state and federal law and still do what is right for our campus and our students it is not just a question of fairness says clery under the equal protection clause of the constitution you have a right to know that the guy who lives next to you in the dorm has been charged with rape according to johnson though col leges that do not adhere to the buckley amendment are at risk of losing
