the brown and white vol 98 no 36 friday march 15,1991 lehigh university tep begins new policy pledging is eliminated tau epsilon phi fraternity announced mon day that it will reorganize its fraternal order a move which will include abolishing its pledg ing program in the last few years we've seen the fratern ity system lose any sense of purpose and goals which it previously had said chris kaup vice president of tau epsilon phi's tau alpha kappa alumni association at a press confer ence announcing the changes kaup pointed out that liability verdicts against fraternities parental pressure on their children not to join fraternities and society's revulsion with the demeaning nature of the pledge system are forcing the system to change he warned any system which fails to change with the changing times will crumble and die tep president stephen harap 92 said the fraternity will reorganize and begin an assoc iate brother program in place of pledging and will begin to play an active role in the community while stressing individualism he cited plans for fundraisers tutoring environmental work and organizing programs between the bethlehem community and stu b4w photo by eric van der hayden dina wills left speaks to a crowd as sharon friedman and joanna godown look on roundtable discussion focuses on media constraints during war when we look at the war we must take out the rhetoric and jargon and look objectively carole gorney associate professor of journalism the war in the persian gulf presented huge chal lenges and sparked major questions for the american press leading some to accuse the military of censor ship and others to fault journalists for threatening national security in a roundtable discussion called the war of the words tuesday professors and students from leh igh's journalism department presented their perspec tives on media coverage of the war moderated by sharon friedman chairperson of the journalism department participants and audience members alike voiced their opinions on different aspects of idia cov ige of r oanna down dis s s e d guidel ines and ground rules placed on the press she referred to the two documents adopted jan 9 by the pentagon on what the media would be permitted to report to the public she said these rules entailed no casualty photo graphs no releasing information about our future plans no revealing the exact location of the city that was attacked no visible light allowed at night and the establishment of a review board to supervise all media activities this review board even prohibited the use of certain descriptive words and the media had to use general adjectives such as small large or many godown described the two major problems of the censuring process which emerged often stories were held up because the review process was taking too long and sometimes the reviewers censured material that was not related to national security godown said jonathan clark 91 said the media coverage of the war was similar to the coverage of the superbowl he described the pre-game hype the way the media usually cover every possible topic and tactic until superbowl sunday he made an analogy to the pre war hype the media created clark said he was opposed to this glamorizing the idea of war the media was fishing for information and wanted some baw photo by mike york mike zovlstoski and john divito laugh while waiting for the bus in front of drown hall see journalists page 6 see tep page 5 lifestyle celebrating women at lehigh page 7
