the brown and white vol 98 n0.5 friday september 21 1990 lehigh university off-campus housing limitations proposed by erica crespi brown and white editorial page editor in order to protect the neighbor hoods of the permanent residents bethlehem city council discussed limiting oft-campus housing options for lehigh students on the south side tuesday night councilman paul calvo predicted that the south side's neighborhoods will be lost to student housing within five years unless council passes legis lation to limit student housing area although councilman otto ehrsam warned that such a limit may not be constitutional calvo said that lancast er and lock haven pa have ordin ances that restrict student housing the debate began when stephen pinter 303 e fourth st complained about the parking problems and dis turbances caused by the students liv ing in his neighborhood lehigh should pay to put the stu dents up on the mountain where they belong they don't belong down here said pinter 73 a long-time resident i'm not against the students in gen eral—it isn't the students it's the housing he said the south side has always been a close-knit neighborhood area with many ethnic groups calvo said if something is not done soon to control expansion there will not be many permanant residents on the south side calvo said the council is responsi ble to maintain the number of perman ent residences in the south side if the students don't realize that they have a living standard that is different than that of the permanent resident then they are kidding themselves calvo said student living is different than permanent living more students are seeking off-cam pus housing in the past year because the university was forced to crack down on underage drinking accord ing to the councilmen with more students living on the south side there is the well-known parking problem since there are more vcrs tvs stolen from lu off-campus houses by louise weston brown and white editor in chief more than 750 worth of property was stolen saturday night from off-campus student houses on montclair and carlton avenues according to the bethlehem police senior scott miller reported that a videocassette recorder and a cable television box were stolen from his home at 830 montclair ave between 11:45 p.m and 1:45 a.m which was unlocked the value of the property is approximately 250 a videocassette recorder two speakers and two video tapes worth 332 were reported stolen from joan karn of 451 montclair ave police said sophomore robert funk 426 carlton ave told police that a microwave oven valued at 250 was stolen from his home police said they believe the same person or persons committed the burglaries as well as similar burglaries which have occurred near the lehigh campus recently a camera was reported stolen from 467 montclair ave on sept 18 on sept 14 a television was reported stolen from 318 packer ave two videocassette recorders and a television were rush rules make freshmen accountable by lydia randolph brown and white news writer beginning this fall new frat ernity rush rules regarding alcohol are being instituted in addition to those which began in the fall of 1989 last fall dry rush elim inated the service of alcohol at all rush events this year these new rules are key com ponents in furthering the process of dry rush said bob robeson assistant dean of students three of the rules emphas ized on the memorandum for all freshmen men are as fol lows * rushees found drinking on the hill or in the vicinity of off-campus fraternity houses will be required to meet with an ifc interfraternity coun cil executive officer to determine their future rush ing privileges ♦ rushees with more than one dry rush violation will inevitably lose all pledging privileges until fall 1991 a rushee found drinking in more than one incident will almost certainly be banned from rushing robeson said rush rules also dictate that all freshmen rushees must sign an ifc rush waiver to ensure their eligibility to pledge this waiver gives the ifc permission to be inform ed about any drinking viola tions during rush there have been no rush waivers returned to the dean of students office yet the idea of having a dry rush stems from the ifc's solution to deter drinking robeson said the purpose of dry rush is so fraternities won't use alcohol to lure rushees because that leads to misrepresents what fraternit ies are about the new rules say that frat ernities must designate a dry rush weekend during which the fraternity is not allowed to have an alcoholic party however fraternity mem bers disagree with the effec tiveness of the new rules rich frankel 93 member of alpha tau omega fraternity said dry rush is unfair to freshmen rushees it could give a misrepresentation of what a house is really like jeff zerweck 93 member of phi sigma kappa fratern ity expressed the same senti ments alcohol is a big part of rush becuase it helps the rushee
