aircraft construction firm to deliver june 4 address sanford mcdonnell chairman emeritus of mcdonnell douglas corp will deliver the principal address june 4 at lehigh's 121st commence ment exercises announced lehigh president peter likins and robert kossar president of this year's senior class mcdonnell who will receive a leh igh doctor of laws degree during the ceremonies at stabler arena will speak on ethics and freedom li kins said lehigh was extremely fortunate to have mcdonnell a leader in calling for a restoration of ethical values in america as its speaker sanford mcdonnell's career is a shining example to all college grad uates said likins he has succeed ed at the highest levels of busi ness yet maintained and even strengthened the ethical character of his organiza tion and its employees i'm sure leh igh graduates will receive his message eagerly mcdonnell a chief executive officer for 16 years until his retirement in 1988 introduced a code of ethics for the corporation in 1983 since then more than 115,000 mcdonnell douglas employees to date have completed training in how to keep high ethical values at the center of their daily business lives mcdonnell 67 received his bachel or of arts degree in economics from princeton university in 1945 and three years later received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engin eering from the university of col orado he received a master of science degree in applied mechanics from washington university in 1954 following a stint as a non-commis sioned officer in the army during world war 11 mcdonnell entered mcdonnell aircraft corp a firm founded by his uncle in 1948 in 1959 he became vice president of project management three years later he was named vice president and general manager of all combat aircraft and was elected to the mcdonnell aircraft corp board of directors mcdonnell was elected to the board's executive committee in 1963 and two years later was named vice president and aircraft general manag er in 1966 he was elected president of the mcdonnell aircraft company a division of mcdonnell aircraft corp when mcdonnell aircraft corp and douglas aircraft company merged in 1967 mcdonnell was elected a direc tor of mcdonnell douglas corp in 1971 he was named executive vice president and later that year he was elected president of mcdonnell doug las corp a year later he was elected chief executive officer of the corporation mcdonnell retired last year after 40 years of service to mcdonnell doug las as chairman emeritus of the cor poration he remains a leader in busi ness and commui ity activities in 1988 mcdonnell served as board chairman of the united way of greater st louis he is a former national president of the boy scouts of amer ica and he is an associate fellow of the american institute of aeronautics and astronautics mcdonnell douglas corp st louis is a leader in aircraft and space technology it is the producer of the f 15 eagle fa 18 hornet and av-8b harrier ii combat aircraft and the md 80 twinjet and dc-10 tri-jet commer cial airliners with itsmd-11 advanced technology tri-jet currently under development the company produced the mercu ry and gemini manned spacecraft and it has also produced various missile systems omr photo sanford mcdonnell new ordinance to restrict parking by joe daly bfown and white sports editor the bethlehem city council has passed an ordinance enabling the bethlehem parking authority to establish a parking permit program which would throw another obstacle at the lehigh parking crisis the ordinance specifies that park ing permits will be issued only to owners of motor vehicles registered at an address in a designated residential area this presents a problem for lehigh students living off campus since their vehicles are generally registered at their permanent address rather than their school address hugh morrison parking authority solicitor explained the ordinance pro vides a maximum of two permits per residence for students whose vehicles are not registered at the address even apartment buildings that house stu dents such as lehigh towers would be limited to two permits per building students living on campus would not be entitled to any permits morrison claimed the ordinance benefits students rather than discrim inates against them all the other ordinances we have read have not made any provisions for cars not registered at the address he said students will just have to decide among themselves which two cars are most important morrison said junior caryn rubinstein an off campus resident whose housemates have four cars said that there was no parking problem on her street we really don't have any trouble she said but i know the parking permit program is going to cause a fight in our house barbara kreppel director of auxili ary services felt that off-campus leh igh students had two options accord ing to kreppel they could decide among themselves which cars were really necessary or they could talk to their landlords about the problem landlords should be willing to con vert backyards into parking spaces for residents where possible kreppel said because doing so will improve the property's value since parking spots will be in high demand in that case landlords would most likely raise tenant's rent kreppel said as for lehigh tower residents krep pel suggested they use the parking lot originally designed for them the lot is two blocks north on the other side of the railroad tracks said senior andrew shane it's inconvenient and not everyone from lehigh towers can saw
