president died april 19 m blough nursing home bethlehem he was the husband of emmeline ungurian hoffman lewis of 132 e market st bethlehem and the late marian carter chapman lewis president of the university for 18 years the augusta ga native wore many hats throughout his career including that of physicist mathe matician scientist and inventor prior to coming to lehigh he spent 23 years at bell laboratories and served as an administrator with the apollo space program lewis the guiding force m the engin eering for the apollo project that put the first american on the moon also worked on this country's first radar system and wrote the equation of a phonograph needle moving m a groove lewis saw lehigh change and grow during his tenure as president with the addition of visiting commit tees m privileged to have known such a fine person lewis enrolled at harvard univers ity at age 16 where he earned three degrees as a rhodes scholar m adv anced mathematics he earned two additional degrees at oxford univers ity m england he also received six honorary degrees including an honor ary doctor of science degree from the medical college of pennsylvania holding 33 u.s patents on devices such as microwave antennas and fil ters and digital error detectives lewis also received numerous awards members of the lehigh asa packer society established a 250,000 scholar ship fund m lewis name m 1981 and the deming lewis faculty award was established by lehigh alumni to honor faculty having the greatest impact on undergraduate lives the contribution of those legend ary professors and m turn what since the end of world war ii to end these conflicts failure to take advantage of it will endanger our survival former secretary of defense robert mcnamara told about 700 people monday in grace hall con cerning u.s soviet relations he explained the devastating consequences that remain possible as long as the cold war continues between the soviet union and un united states these political conflicts have the potential to escalate into military and nuclear confrontation mcnamara said delivering the fourth annual cohen lecture in international relations his speech was entitled the future of k west relations can we ever end the cold war for the past 40 years tlie cold war has led to 2 trillion in united states expenditures on military and nuclear equipment it has distort ed our foreign
