replace a lehigh institution as director for more than 40 years director of admissions samuel missimer has devoted himself to lehigh and to what he calls the heart of the school the students last week missimer announced his retirement sam is an institution said vice president of student affairs marsha duncan of missimer the lehigh alumnus 5o began working in the admissions office soon after graduation and became its director in 1962 charged with the tough job of replac ing him is patricia boig director of major gifts for lehigh's development office boig like missimer has a long history at lehigh she graduated from lehigh in 1977 with a bachelor's deg ree in french and began working for lehigh in 1979 in addition her father and father-in-law both went to lehigh i'm flattered to have been consider ed and chosen sam missimer's shoes are pretty hard to fill it's going to be a challenge she said though boig has not worked in admissions missimer is confident she has the experience to do the job pat knows lehigh missimer said she understands and loves the institu tion boig's responsibility has been to secure funds for projects that have been approved by the president's council she coordinated lehigh's challenge 35-35 financial aid cam paign and the completion phase of the rauch business center she described her current job as developing relationships so that people become interested in the uni versity and want to make an invest ment in the university boig and missimer emphasized the job change is not as dramatic as it might seem boig said the jump to admissions is one of promoting leh igh with our alui.'ni to promoting lehigh to high school seniors and their parents and that whole support group of guidance counselors boig said she plans to continue to work with alumni on tlie alumni admissions outreach program the alumni admission outreach program initially targeted 11 areas across tlie country where there are pockets of alumni duncan said alumni representatives were then used as contacts for prospective stu dents in the region to increase interest in lehigh in 1983 prior to the alumni out reach program 80 percent of lehigh's student body was from new jersey new york and pennsylvania now as a result of tlie program 69 percent of the population is from those three states and there is more empha sis being placed on recruiting in other areas across the country recruitment efforts have been increased to compensate for the shrinking student pool-the number of high school students eligible to apply to college this population drop which la particularly pronounced in the northeast will not rise again until 1992 duncan said boig takes over sept 1 however she will be working with missimer over the summer preparing for the influx of approximately 1,085 nervous fresh men after retiring missimer said he and his wife a seventh grade english teacher plan to travel and get invol ved in other activities i can't remem ber when we've had elected as vice president amy fei ostein as secretary and debra klinek as treasurer for tlie class of 1990 according to outgoing senior class president rob kossar kossar said margins of victory are not being released this year although individual candid ates may obtain the breakdown of the results they were all competitive every position was won by a workable margin he noted approximately 100 rising juniors voted with i majority electing lisa wagner as president karen pupke as vice pre idenl stacey winter as secretary and kristin jay as treasurer for the class of 1992 craig jill wa i as president p i rrasvic nt josh silverman as secretary and bena spiegel as treasurer about 100 rising sophomore voted in tlie election other candidates running for senior class president were doug burns david monson nnd george neilans kossar explained the class president's responsibilities include sending surveys to seniors for the graduation speaker working closely with lehigh presi dent peter likins and the alumni office to choose a graduation speaker completing a pub night schedule soliciting volunteers choosing a gift campaign chairman planning fundraisers and senior week activities and supervising freshman elections in tlie spring reflecting on the past year kossar said our class officers were fantastic this year he suggested the next senior class president make it more clear to the student body that the hoard of trustees chooses the graduation speaker not the senior class president the president's role is to act as a liaison between the student body and the board of trustees he
