sponsored by le high's three honorary engineering fraternities eta kappa nu pi tau sigma and tau beta pi joyful spirits generally attrib uted to lehigh's overwhelming de feat of case institute saturday af ternoon reigned throughout and at 1:00 o'clock 400 tired couples regretfully took to their cars sat isfied that lehigh had shone to night bob chester brought his sweet swing style from recent engage ments in new york's hotel astor amount theater and frank dail ey's meadowbrook to highlight the first big social affair of the fall semester originally announced as a semi formal affair and richard smith were in charge of decorations wayne kraft met.e was treas urer of the dance elections for arcadia to be within month new constitution requires student vote for new council within 30 days by provision of the newly rati fied constitution elections for a new arcadia must be held within 30 days tomorrow night arca dia will set the date for the elec tions that will choose the mem bers of the first student council under the new constitution in the future candidates for arcadia wil be nominated by peti tion the petitions for this special election must be filled and re turned to the was carl kreidler allen town who is president of the so ciety highlight of the evening was the presentation to the guest of honor of a photograph of fritz laboratory after receiving a degree in civil engineering at the norwegian in stitute of technology lyse came to this country and lehigh in 1929 when he was appointed chief of column tests investigation in fritz laboratory he served in this ca pacity until 1931 when he was made research assistant professor of engineering materials in 1933 he was made an associ ate professor and in 1937 was ele vated to the post of research pro fessor he retired from lehigh in 1938 andl returned to his native country to accept a position at the norwegian institute of technol ogy when the germans invaded norway dr lyse managed to es cape into sweden one day ahead of the nazis while in sweden he worked with the underground and at the close of the war re turned to n i t as head of the department of civil engineering albert spalding the distin geology held its first meeting of the fall semester in the trilobite room at lehigh university thursday afternoon this year marks the forty-third birthday of the organization orig inally named the mining and ge ology society it changed its name to the howard eckfeldt society in 1942 in honor of dr howard eck feldt who served the university for over forty years the meeting included a business session to discuss new candidates for entrance into the society a general re-organization concluded the business meeting a movie was shown for entertainment of all those in attendance the pro gram was concluded with refresh ments served under the direction of doug sammak treasurer university band demonstrates at half-time rally draws few hundred handful represents student body of 3000 with resounding cheers echoing across the face of old south mountain several hundred stu dents let the world know where their hearts were last friday night during lehigh's first pep rally of the 1947 football season at grace hall the rally was primarily held to teach the student body new cheers and brush up on the old ones and the students responded with en thusiasm and voice that virtually rocked the foundation of grace hall the brown and white band played spirited marches and chorus after chorus of the alma mater lehigh will shine to night and everybody takes his hat off to lehigh irvin huber 49 master of cere monies introduced to the boister out throng coach leckonby who gave a short speech on his con fidence in this year's football team russ jones captain for the cor nell and case games was also in troduced along with the members of this year's cheerleading squad colonel sadler director of ath letics spoke of the performance of the lehigh team at cornell which he termed high-spirited history's worst according to fay c bartlett assistant professor of physical edu cation a member of the lehigh faculty for over 30 years it was the poorest attendance at a pep rally in his memory he men tioned in the interview after fri day's rally the old time rallies when walter okeson treasurer of the university and a member of the first lehigh football teams used to speak and whip the audi ence into something approaching a frenzy several students when asked why they did not attend answered that the fault was that there was not enough publicity given to the event they stated that most of the men did not know about the rally until the day before and there was not time to plan to at tend most of them had home work for saturday that had to be done if they had known about the rally in time they could have planned the work however as one student said afterwards it was a good thing that the football suad had more spirit than the students pre-meds elect officers selection of candidates was the main subject on the agenda at the first meeting of the a e d chap ter of the pre-med society thurs day in williams hall preparations for the annual banquet also discussed the ban quet will be held later in the sem ester and it is planned to extend invitations to the other pre-med societies in the lehigh valley representatives from lafayette muhlenberg moravian and perm state are expected to attend the officers elected at the end of the spring term took their seats they are robert saydah presi dent dean moyer vice-president merton cohen secretary and dekran yazujian treasurer smith speaks to a.i.e.e prof f w smith chairman of the lehigh district of the amer ican institute of electrical engi neering was guest speaker at the initial meeting of that group thursday evening at packard hall his talk familiarized more than 65 students who attended with the organizational structure and work ings of the organization sports movies immediately preceded the speech much to the delight of the gathering new constitution upheld by majority of student body 96 of voters favor ratification polls held open extra day for necessary student participation by james l gill by a vote of 1383 - 65 at the recent referendum the undergrad uate voters approved the new constitution and by-laws of the student body concurrence by 95 per cent of the voters was in great excess of the minimum require ment for ratification — affirmation by two-thirds the new constitu tion went into effect immediately after ratification ratification was withheld until yesterday because saturday's tal ly 1066 - 38 revealed that a ma jority of the student body 1478 had not participated in the bal loting though the count showed that more than two-thirds of the majority favored ratification it was necessary to hold the polls open on monday in order to meet the specification of the ratification clause after the remaining votes 374 were cast the constitution was formally ratified petitions due government under the newly adopted constitution will go into effect as soon as a new arcadia council is elected by provision of this document aspirants to arca dia will be nominated by petition these petitions may be procured at the arcadia office any time this week but they must be filled out and returned by tuesday oct 14 each petition must bear the sig natures of 29 student endorsers a person may sign only one petition the name of each person thus nominated will appear on the bal lot freshmen will not be eligible for candidacy at this initial elec tion but they are eligible to vote at the regular annual elections that will hereafter be held in may however they will be qualified to run for arcadia increased interest and participa tion in elections is anticipated by the constitution revision commit tee which drafted the newly adopted document nominations by petition and popular elections will serve to stimulate election ac tivity they feel considerable stu dent campaigning is expected george horneck 48 chairman of the constitution revision com mittee when questioned about the result of the referendum remarked that he was very gratified that the new constitution had met with such immense approval large portion although only 1104 votes were cast before the extended polling on monday this number is still a very sizeable portion of the cam pus in public elections where party workers are responsible for much participation the turnout is not better with the adoption of the new system of p r increased student interest can be expected said george howatt assistant in structor in government and tech nical adviser to the committee when asked to comment on the show of student interest new features with the adoption of the consti tution new features will be brought into student government here in the future the student body not arcadia will have the power of amendment moreover representatives to arcadia will be chosen directly from the student body by popular vote in annual all-day elections conducted at var ious polling places the new system of voting pro vides for the campus-wide appli cation of the hare system of pro portional representation this plan was drafted into the consti tution as a result of the referen dum on the representation ques tion last spring increased authority for arcadia the use of initiative referendum and recall are provisions ly 1066 - 38 revealed that a ma jority of the student body 1478 had not participated in the bal loting though the count showed that more than two-thirds of the majority favored ratification it was necessary to hold the polls open on monday in order to meet the specification of the ratification clause after the remaining votes 374 were cast the constitution was formally ratified petitions due government under the newly adopted constitution will go into effect as soon as a new arcadia council is elected by provision of this document aspirants to arca dia will be nominated by petition these petitions may be procured at the arcadia office any time this week but they must be filled out and returned by tuesday oct 14 each petition must bear the sig natures of 29 student endorsers a person may sign only one petition the name of each person thus nominated will appear on the bal lot freshmen will not be eligible for candidacy at this initial elec tion but they are eligible to vote at the regular annual elections that will hereafter be held in may however they will be qualified to run for arcadia increased interest and participa tion in elections is anticipated by the constitution revision commit tee which drafted the newly adopted document nominations by petition and popular elections will serve to stimulate election ac tivity they feel considerable stu dent campaigning is expected george horneck 48 chairman of the constitution revision com mittee when questioned about the result of the referendum remarked that he was very gratified that the new constitution had met with such immense approval large portion although only 1104 votes were cast before the extended polling on monday this number is still a very sizeable portion of the cam pus in public elections where party workers are responsible for much participation the turnout is not better with the adoption of the new system of p r increased student interest can be expected said george howatt assistant in
