with erica crespl and john masonls brown and white news writers it's going to be a rough road dean of students john smeaton said regard ing lehigh's wide ranging social poli cy revisions during a joint meeting of the inter-fraternity and panhellenic councils aug 31 the meeting was one of several held recently to help the university down the path of social change in light of the passage of act 31 by the pennsylvania state legislature which went into effect may 24 a meeting was also held sept 6 with richard pepper assistant district attorney of northampton county and paul florenz a partner of the firm of colb and florenz attended by fraternity and sorority presidents and other greek members the meetings are part of a vigorous effort by university administrators to clear up confusions surrounding the new regulations although the gears of change had already been set in motion last semest er to bring lehigh's social policy more in line with that of many universities nationwide act 31 helped quicken the pace of that change the rules and regulations provided the backdrop for an evening of debate with the major concern focused on the legal liability of hosts of party events the meetings explained how best to reduce liability the scope of liability under act 31 means that anyone who intentionally and knowingly furnishes any liquor or brewed beverage to a minor will be held criminally liable and pay a fine of at least 1,000 for the first violation and 2,500 for each subsequent offen se there was a lot of information we didn't want to hear but had to hear senior steve greenblatt house presi dent of sigma nu fraternity said the legal bu rd of the amend ment is furnish no*v defined as to supply give or provide to or allow a minor to possess on premises or pro perty owned or controlled by the person charged the phrase allow a minor to pos sess on premises or property owned or controlled by the pt n charged places lehigh as well as house presi dents under criminal lability that is not covered by insurance we have to adapt lehigh presi dent peter li kins said we have no choice according to florenz legal counsel to lehigh as long as individuals do not recklessly tolerate underage drink ing liability will be minumum the purpose of the social policy is to limit the liability of the school and the host of the party if you follow the social policy you won't be held legally lia ble he said li kins said we realize that some how we have to behave sensibly and wisely to make sure that these laws don't have any unintended adverse consequences under the social policy only those parties at which alcohol will be served need to be registered with the dean of students office by the wednesday before a party the host of the party who must be of legal drinking age has to bring the registration form to the university center himself once registered and approved by the dean's office tap systems will be provided for kegs of beer which are only allowed at these registered parties to help provide maximum protec tion to party hosts who must ensure that only persons 21 years of age and over are served alcoholic beverages a second location separate from the main party room must be designated as the only site where alcohol may be served only persons 21 years of age includ ing bartenders are allowed in the room and must be stamped prior to entering this raises questions as to the liability problems for house presi dents who are not of age but are responsible for individuals in the room we will need to look at the social policy in its implementation and make the needed adjustments smeaton said to further safeguard party hosts they are required to hire a uniformed security guard to check identification trustee mohler dead at 68 by emily puffer brown and white news writer former lehigh university chairman of the board of trustees harold s mohler died suddenly at age 68 on aug 31 he died of a cardiac arrest in his home town of hershey pa mohler became a member of the board of trustees in 1971 and two years later he became chairman of the board and served until 1965 he remained on the board as a corporate member until his death during his 12 years as chairman of the board mohler worked to raise lehigh's endow ment from 46 million to over 100 million he also served as national chairman of lehigh's new century fund capital campaign which raised 112 million the harold s mohler laboratory located at 200 west packer avenue was dedicated this past june the building houses the institute for robotics center for design and manufactur ing innovation the manufacturing systems engineering program and the department of industrial manufacturing mohler's hard work and dedication in all the projects he was involved in was apparent by the numerous awards he received in his lifetime mohler was awarded an honorary doctor of law degree from both lehigh in 1975 and eiizabethtown college in 1978 in 1977 the lehigh university club of new york presented him with the lin life award in 1984 the asa packer society awarded mohler the founder's award for his outstand ing leadership and dedication to his alma mater mohler graduated from lehigh as a member of the class of 1948 with an engineering major that same year he joined hershey foods where he was rapidly promoted to leadership positions in 1965 he became president of the corporation and nine years later mohler became chairman of the board a position he held for ten years during world war 11 molher was a navigator on a b-17 stationed in italy he was shot down on a combat mission and a war prisoner for a year in germany he was awarded the air medal with two oak leaf clusters and the purple heart for his efforts in the war lehigh university president peter likins said i loved the man and will miss him dearly the memorial service held in hersey pa on sept 6 was attended by 2,000 people molher is survived by his wife melba mol her of hershey a son jeffrey of bethlehem two daughters susan schrectengast of camp hill and julie leonard of hershey as well as five grandcmldren mohler will be deeply missed by all who knew him and memories of all his countless hours of work he did for
