in front of a homecoming crowd of nearly 25,000 at the navy-marine corps memorial stadium in annapolis md saturday the engineers finally toppled the midshipmen 24-9 from a 75-year pedestal of domination and avenged last year's dismal 41-0 loss i remember how it was to come down here last year and have a bad game and certainly the players remem ber said head coach hank small after the game embrace following lehlgh's triumph over navy his grin says it all naval pilot describes life as a pow by frank leyden brown and white news writer capt gerald coffee a naval pilot who served seven years as a prisoner of war in vietnam spoke about his experience wednesday night in packard lab auditori um coffee's talk beyond survival related how he reached within himself to find the motivation to survive as a prisoner coffee received his navy wings in 1959 and for the next several years flew high reconnaissance jets on feb 3 1966 coffee's aircraft was hit by enemy fire over north vietnam although he parachuted to safety he sustained serious injuries and was immediately cap tured by the north vietnamese hcspcntthc next seven years in a prison camp just outside of hanoi throughout the entire experience coffee said he never lost faith he said his driving force was the faith he had in himself his fellow inmates his country and god no matter how tough things got he said he was always able to dig deeper inside himself to find the strength to survive he told about how other inmates strove to help one another communicating by using a code transmitted by tapping on the walls of their cell using this code prisoners were able to inform each other about what was happening in the war and back at home coffee said instead of giving up he used the experience to grow through long hours of introspec tion he was able to know himself better and learned how to live life to the fullest since his release coffee has focused on doing just that he said he hopes by making his experience a positive one he is setting an inspirational example for all he currently lives in hawaii with his family tom johnson publisher of the los angeles times reflected on the strength and eloquence of the annual 24 hour run through bethlehem and the campus to support pows and soldiers mia this weekend students meet 25 company reps at expo 87 by jim benson brown and white nows writer engineering expo 87 an opportun ity for lehigh students to talk informal ly with business representatives about careers summer jobs and life after graduation was again success ful despite a smaller turnout than last year held friday in the university cent er expo 87 attracted 25 companies including business notables such as american telephone and telegraph international business machines du pont general electric and mobil cor poration most companies came equipped with a table containing handouts food a background display and one or two representatives the tables lined the walls of both the hutchinson and osbournc rooms allowing the stu dents the opportunity to move freely about and talk with representatives lisa sievers a 1984 lchigh graduate and du pont representative said most students at the expo were electrical engineers who were interested in finding summer jobs but she said about 30 percent of the students who attended seemed seriously interested in finding companies they would pos sibly like to work for after graduation attendance at the expo was general ly described by representatives as moderate or steady but in any case less than last year's attendance a number of factors for this decrease were cited including its location on the third floor and the fewer compan ies represented this year chuck davis a martin marietta baltimore aerospace representative said he felt perhaps expo 87 was underpromotcd senior brian bostwick director of expo 87 said he felt it was not underpromoted but instead he said perhaps too much of the promotion was aimed at the electrical engineer ing department although the attend ance was less the students who did attend seemed more enthusiastic and interested than last year's group it's generally been a very positive thing bostwick
