lehigh university black and white vol 95 — no 30 bethlehem pa friday february 3 1984 215 861-4184 afternoon fire hits trembley causes 35,000 in damages by jenny kay fire swept through a trembley park apartment wednesday causing an esti mated 35,000 in damage according to captain eugene novak of the bethlehem fire department novak said the fire was caused by combustibles located too close to the electric heating units almost every thing in the apartment was destroyed novak said but no one was injured this is the second fire-related incident at the university this week which began at 1 40 p.m in a bedroom of apartment 2 prior to the fire one of the residents david alperin 86 left the apartment for about five minutes when he returned smoke had entirely engulfed the apart ment i ran to the apartment upstairs and pulled the alarm then i grabbed an extinguisher broke the bedroom win dow and tried to put it out alperin said mark johnson 86 also came with a fire extinguisher when he smelled the smoke from an adjacent apartment ned rich 85 was visiting in the apart ment upstairs where alperin pulled the alarm rich then called campus police to confirm the fire alarm he also alerted students in neighboring apartments some of which also filled with smoke rich said it took the fire department about 10 minutes to arrive ten firefigh ters battled the blaze for about 15 minutes jeff brotman 85 also a resident of the apartment said i lost everything 1 own even my skis melted along with alperin and brotman roommates paul langer 86 dave steinman 86 and dave warsaw 85 will all be housed by the university while residence operations res ops reno vates the apartment mrs pat likins who happened to be walking by at the time of the fire said you are welcome to stay with us boys our house is still charred from our fire but we've got plenty of room barbara kreppel director of res ops said that two apartments in sm ags have been set up for the students to live in temporarily we do not have an esti mate as to how long the students will be displaced she said residents of adja cent apartments who were moved to beardslee and brodhead houses over night due to damaged wiring returned an estimated 35,000 in damage the fire was reportedly caused by combust ibles located too close to the electric heating units new financial aid program instituted by tony coppola this year marks the beginning of a four-year financial aid program known as the 30-30 concept according to wil liam stanford director of financial aid the goal is to provide 30 percent of the undergraduate students with 30 percent of the total cost of attendance he said right now the average scholarship covers 31 percent of the cost of enroll ment but only 27 percent of the students are receiving aid explained don crewell associate director of financial aid to reach this 30-30 goal the university will channel 250,000 each year into financial aid over the entire four-year period crewell said in the past crewell said the university has always worked towards increasing the financial aid pro portionally with the cost of enrollment he added that the 30-30 concept was initiated to reach out to more students the new program is the result of a national survey of comparable learning institutions stanford said he said that the university ranked fairly high with regard to the average amount of aid given however in the number of stu dents given aid we fell short crewell said that he believes the new program will play an integral part in maintaining the university's competi tive status with comparable institutions the figures of 30 percent of the stu dents receiving aid and 30 percent of total cost were accepted by the board of trustees because they were attainable goals sizeable but not outrageous stanford said several unexpected changes have sur faced since the program was first pres ented to the board of trustees accord ing to stanford he said that this year state grants have dropped to about 55,000 from 980,000 in the 1979-80 school year in addition college work study has been cut on the national level from 590 million in 1983-84 to 550,000 million for 1984-85 this will reduce each colleges allotment of work study aid to be distrib uted among financial aid recipients and thus result in more borrowing stanford said he added that when the 30-30 plan was drawn up it was under the assump student suffers ruptured spleen in accident mon a university student is recuper ating today in st luke's hospital from a fall monday night in front of alpha chi rho fraternity peter ruocco 86 a house brother was swinging on a rope swing hanging from a tree along the hill leading to the fraternity house at about midnight when he lost his grip and fell approximately 15 feet onto the nearby street according to house president john nearly 300 apply for taylor selection set before lottery by janis barney the iceman cometh nearly 300 students have applied for a possible 105 spots in taylor college mark erickson assistant dean of stu dents for residence life has announced erickson said that the selection pro cess for students interested in living in taylor college will make sure that peo ple that get into taylor college are in for the right reasons and are really inter ested in its concepts interested stu dents had to fill out applications for the available spots and also will be inter viewed by a selection committee erick son explained the selection committee will be trying for diversity erickson said there's no one ideal person he added that they are looking for lots of different people he noted that they don't want people who are interested in the carpeting and the air-conditioning or the idea will fall flat on its face barbara kreppel director of resi dence operations resops said we are looking for a diversified group of peo ple who will bring creativity and new ideas into the house erickson said that the selection com mittee consists of two students two faculty members a staff member area coordinator allen cuff kreppel and himself he noted that at least one com mittee member will be involved in each b&w photo by george cook leavitt residents awoke
