to i don't think anybody has the answer to it bethlehem police captain joseph moyer said moyer was talking about the lack of off-street parking around the university according to james harper university community relations director parking is one of the perennial problems of uni versities m an urban area harper said that along with noise stu dents cars spilling into parking spaces on residential streets pose a problem for schools across the country the univer sity on the south side of bethlehem is no exception bethlehem city council president dolores caskey said she sees it as a big problem and one that affects the rela tionship between the city and the univer sity if i had to pick one thing that affects the relationship parking would be it that's the biggest thing " she said though it cannot be proven statisti cally yet there seems to be more univer sity drivers with cars this year if these added vehicles congest parking on cam pus the spillover into bethlehem resi dents parking spaces could be greater harper who heads the appeals com mittee for motor vehicle tickets said there has been a great increase m the amount of appeals submitted this year based on this amount and the accounts m the appeals harper said parking is more difficult this year but we can't get a grip on why chris christian manager of univer sity transportation services said that he has received reports of more difficulty m on-campus parking however registra tion statistics will not be compiled by the motor vehicles department until january „ he noted that lesser used lots at taylor stadium and on montclair avenue near warren square seemed to be more filled this year although he could not say why according to christian another factor that is probably affecting parking m and around campus is the construction workers who drive to the mart extension building site caskey said the areas around the uni versity that are affected the most are those west of campus on summit street and carlton avenue and north of cam pus on morton street it's a long-term thing she said from time to time the issue surfaces at council moyer head of the traffic department said that the parking of students m resi dential areas certainly is a problem that draws periodic complaints from residents he commented that officers do not look forward to ticketing duty believe me they'd much rather be doing other work he said also officers don't dis evening final exams slated due to shorter exam period by stuart silberman this semester's final exams will be scheduled m the evening m addition to the morning and afternoon time slots registrar james wagner has announced wagner said that a past forum calendar committee had scheduled the beginning of this semester to start a week later than usual and conse quently has left only a nine-day period for final exams from dec 15-23 finals at 4 p.m and probably some at 7 p.m therefore will be included wagner said he would try to stay away from sunday morning and fri day evening but added he might have to put small ones there wagner said he does not begin to work on the exam schedule early m the semester because of the tre mendous number of drops m the ninth week he waits until then and then begins the scheduling process he added wagner noted that there have been night exams at the university m the past other schools including duke uni versity pennsylvania state univer sity princeton university rutgers university tufts university and the university of virginia also have night exams however princeton holds their exams after winter vacation i'd go for exams after christmas m a minute wagner said adding that you do a better job if you have a break he explained that by holding exams after winter vacation the semester could start after labor day and there would be no prob lems with summer jobs meaning that students would not have to leave early to start classes however wagner said that he doubts the uni versity would change to this scheduling gerdes resigns in protest outlines two-fold reasons down to earth by brktt lowy the controversy surrounding last year's denial of tenure to university pro fessor of law james tobak has resur faced this month with the resignation of marilyn gerdes assistant professor of law m the department of accounting and law gerdes sent a letter to university pro vost arthur humphrey on oct 10 outlin ing her reasons for resigning her resignation becomes effective m august of 1984 at the end of her current contract the reasons for my resignation are two-fold gerdes said i resigned over the failure of the administration to give credit to faculty input and also because of my dissatisfaction with the failure of affirmative action at the university and m the college of business and econom ics m particular part of gerdes dissatisfaction stems from the denial of tenure for tobak des pite the positive recommendation of his department the department of accounting and law the deans coun cil comprised of the deans of the three colleges and the graduate school at the university and provost arthur humph rey reversed the department's recom mendation citing compelling reasons ." the faculty appeal com mittee denied tobak's appeal upholding the compelling reasons judgment subsequent protests and petitions by stu dents and faculty failed to reverse the decision it's a great loss to lehigh losing someone of marilyn's calibre " tobak said unfortunately i really don't know if it her resignation will change my situation gerdes has not yet made any future plans but feels that i would be person ally and professionally better elsewhere in response to the vagueness of the term compelling reasons a faculty committee has been formed to look into a definition of the term the committee will not judge the tobak case per se but will investigate compelling reasons " this parachutist decided to drop in on the halftlme festivities of the lehlgh-army football game the engineer grldders upset the black knights on a marty horn bootleg 13-12 lack of sufficient response hampering escort service by jonathan ansbacher i would have expected a few people each run but so far we haven't had that much response to it commented chris christian manager of transportation services regarding the new escort ser vice sponsored by the dean of students office the service which began oct 17 serves more than just one function according to kathy dean foreign stu dent adviser it's a service geared toward on and off-campus women but we also want to serve off campus gradu ate students who have odd hours and may work until late at night ' ' dean said our main concern is the safety of those women who would walk home alone at night said muriel whitcomb assistant dean of students we want to protect those students with no access to transportation and get them home safely at night dean added the bus schedule revolves around the saucon married and graduate students smags housing bus runs the stu dents are picked up at the university center uc flagpole beginning at 7:40 p.m and pick ups run every hour until 11:40 p.m on weeknights and until 1:40 a.m on friday and saturday nights the buses will drop students off at any dorm on the lower campus and the hill house off-campus students can be dropped off anywhere between bishop thorpe street third street delaware avenue hayes street and university avenue although the response has been weak so far it is hoped that participation will increase when the weather changes i expect it will be different when the weather worsens more people will use it m cold and foul weather but i hope stu : dents realize that this service is for security not convenience christian said i stress that this escort service is for safety not warmth whitcomb added see
