founder's day exercises on sunday at packer memorial chapel pictured with likins and also clad in full dress uni form is professor of physics raymond emrlch mace bearer edpol considers common freshman program by stuart silberman the uniform freshman year commit tee is currently examining the possibility of changing university admission poli cies according to metallurgy and mate rials engineering department chairman alan pense chairman of the faculty committee on educational pol icy edpol the uniform freshman year commit tee was created to look at the feasibility of bringing more unity to the freshman year according to pense pense stated that there may be several educational benefits to making the freshman year similar for all students having the common year would mean a broader variety of courses pense added citing economics computer literacy and mathematics as courses all students should be required to take he stated that these are courses most students take sometime during their four years at the university and that they should be put in the freshman year william quay dean of students added that the new admissions procedure would involve students submitting their applications to the university rather than to a particular college the college of engineering and physical sciences the college of arts and sciences or the college of business and economics . quay explained that once admitted the student will be enrolled in a common freshman year after completing these common courses the student would transfer to a particular college he added quay said that he thought it was a good idea for all university students to be exposed to some common courses and that he would include a good eng lish composition course and one in the development of western civilizations he said he felt a strong math program was also important and would emphas ize analytical courses quay said all these are important components for an educated person curtis clump associate dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences said he had some unanswered questions for example would there be another admissions process at the end of the common freshman year to be accepted in the college of the students choice he also questioned whether there would be limited entrances to particular curricula clump said he had his own opinions on common courses he elaborated that the engineers and arts majors should not have to take the same exact courses and explained his one from column a and one from column b approach clump elaborated that under this method the students would have to fulfill basic distri bution requirements but in doing this they could choose from a number of available courses for example a stu dent could fulfill his math course requirement from choosing either math 21 or math 41 depending on his interests samuel missimer director of admis sions said that this issue is not new and in fact has been discussed for a long time missimer said the issue was first brought up 25 or 30 years ago by john karakash dean emeritus of the college of engineering and physical sciences missimer said the new system would allow a little more flexibility in admit ting students he added that he did not think there would be any problems with unbalanced enrollments because the office of admissions would have some indications ' of the percentages of admit ted students who would end up in each college black-student's fraternity projected by bsu for fall by anthony coppola the black student's union bsu is projecting that the university will have its first black student's fraternity by fall of next year according to gregg cobbs 85 president of the bsu larry philippi assistant to the dean of students for fraternity and sorority affairs said however no one has come to see me about it he went on to say that he would support anything they decide to do cobbs said that the bsu has wanted to put a black student's fraternity on cam pus since he was a freshman he added that the fraternity selected would not supercede the bsu but would rather provide added strength and opportuni ties to black students particularly freshman the three main fraternities being con sidered by the bsu are alpha phi omega omega psi phi and kappa alpha psi the fraternity selected by the bsu would establish a chapter here at the university and on that foundation even more could be accomplished cobbs said he added that the bsu hopes to eventually have a black student's sor ority on campus as well however a fra ternity is their first concern lionel randall 86 a member of the bsu said that he anxiously awaits the arrival of a black chapter adding that he is very pleased with the university's con cern over minority students and the efforts that the faculty and staff are making in this area band cheers to be reviewed by executive band committee by karen schoonover despite recent complaints about the marching 97's allegedly offensive cheers at football games a decision was reached by william quay dean of stu dents and the band's executive commit tee to have no external monitoring of their cheers according to eric hansen , 84 band manager the band's behav ior at the navy game on sept 24 was the center of the recent controversy wallace richardson professor of industrial engineering a long-time member of the forum and a navy alum nus raised concerns at the last forum xiv meeting richardson said that he wanted nothing more than to call to peo ple's attention an undesirable condition i want them to make the decision richardson who attended the navy game said it was a beautiful sunny saturday afternoon and it was first classmen senior parent's weekend navy was extremely courteous and well behaved they were first class all the way but when the game started the lehigh marching 97 interrupted with rude and raunchy yells richardson said everyone is aware of the problem but no one has done anything about it he said he also expressed concern for the girls in the band now the band is coed and i wonder how the girls feel amongst all that richardson said hansen denied any charges that the band was in any way rude or obscene in fact hansen said we received a letter from navy thanking us for an enjoyable afternoon despite hansen's denial quay prohi beat it b&w photo by todd strassberg ralph elliot 58 and dave felker 58 get in a bit of practice before their
