parties has been lifted following a meeting of administrators and student leaders wed nesday however three conditions for the parties were included in the decision it was decided that it would not be socially productive to prohibit hotel par ties said dean of students william quay instead three conditions were placed on the holding of hotel parties 1 all hotel parties will be closed guest attendance will be by written invi tation only 2 security people must be on duty to ensure that only those with invitations are admitted 3 the area coordinators or larry philippi assistant to the dean of students for fraternity and sorority affairs must determine the number of guests that can attend based on the size of the area where the party is to be held as soon as these conditions are writ ten up we can roll with it quay said this should be done as of next week these conditions met with favorable response from those at the meeting although some questions were raised especially about the security people and the written invitations bonnie solt 85 residence halls council rhc presi dent asked if the security people had to be hired the concensus was that the security would be volunteers from the living group or could be hired in the instance that the security people are hired the money would come out of the living group's social budget professor james mclntosh chairman of the department of social relations suggested that volunteers share duty on a rotating basis with each individual doing as little as 30 minutes of duty during the party the responsibility of the security relates the university experience to a group of prospective students and their parents in the wilson gallery in the alumni memorial building freshmen to elect officers in fall for first time by stuart silberman freshman class elections will fee held this year on oct 6 rather than during march according to lorraine scheib ener student activities coordinator scheibener said that this is the first time that a class will have elected offic ers during the fall of their freshman year the decision to move elections to the beginning of the year came directly from the dean of students office according to eric altman 84 student activities council sac president altman said that it was their baby and that sac's only role is to set the election rules and to make sure that all offices are elected fairly and impartially according to associate dean of stu dents robert cohen the incoming fresh man class has a lot of spirit and that moving the class elections to the begin ning of the year will help to maintain the momentum cohen added that the class needs some structure and elec tions will help in getting the class started cohen said the officers will be able to help the class plan freshman events and fund-raisers just like the other classes when asked if he felt the candidates will have had enough time to introduce themselves cohen responded those people will make it their business scheibener said freshmen have a lot of class spirit and enthusiasm to do things we feel that by having class offic ers during the freshman year this class will retain this cohesive feeling kevin clayton 84 senior class presi dent said i like the idea of starting class identity early the only thing that worries me is that they've the fresh men only know each other for a little over a month and that because of this the elections may turn into a popularity contest clayton who was elected vice presi dent in march of his freshman year added that just because a lot of people know his name it doesn't mean the per son will do the best job nothing about changing elections has been discussed by sac according to altman he added that he still doesn't know whether or not the dean of stu dents office will have elections for the freshman class again in march or if every class from now on will have october elections this year's elections will be held on the second floor of the university center between 10 a.m and 5 p.m come together the broadway show beatlemanla was presented at stabler arena on thursday night a slide show and actors playing the fab four brought the sixties to life see story page 5 associate provost position to be permanent post again by teresa kilcullen the position of associate provost will be re-established as a permanent posi tion in the university hopefully by july 1 according to university provost arthur humphrey the position had existed until three years ago when the individual who had filled the slot left humphrey said since then the position has been occupied on a rotational part-time basis by members of the faculty he explained we are actually re-arranging the exist ing positions in the provost's office not adding a position he added this person would have a continuing responsibility for personnel matters work with the deans on hiring minorities and women represent the provost on the edpol committee on educational pol icy and sos committee on standing of students committees and be involved with the entire planning process in the provost's office humphrey said he added that although no new respon sibilities are being added the fact that having just one person permanently responsible will put an end to the training process necessary when individuals are working on a part-time basis thus increasing efficiency robert johnson professor of civil engineering and chairman of edpol said that when edpol was approached for advice and consultation the commit tee was generally in favor of the idea although it was concerned with the addi tion of another administrator especially the addition of another line person to the provost's office someone that an individual would have to see before see ing the provost humphrey said that the position would be filled through an open search the university will advertise the opening nationally and will accept applications from those inside and outside the univer sity . johnson said
