brown and white lehigh university vol 94 — no 42 bethlehem pa friday april 8 1983 215 861-4184 greek social self-regulation urged by likins by teresa kilcullen university president peter likins has pledged his support for the development of a code of fraternity conduct which could possibly replace the current social regulations speaking at monday's interfraternity council ifc meeting likins presented a proposal to the house presidents for a code which would be the foundations on which we can build a new model code for the regulation of social behavior at lehigh likins stated m a letter to ifc presi dent john compton 84 if the ifc is successful m this effort i will be pleased to work with you to persuade the forum the faculty and the trustees that lehigh's students should be given an opportunity to demonstrate their capac ity for self-regulation of social conduct likins said that he has been concerned with social regulations m one way or another since he came here and sees a kind of discomfort with the current system however he explained that his concern is centered upon the actual existence of administration-imposed rules that govern students social behav ior whereas the ifc's concern seems to be with changing specific details of the current code such as the food require ment or the shut-down time of parties compton explained that likins letter and his speech to the ifc occurred after the ifc's proposals to change details of the current regulations had passed the subcommittee levels of the forum compton said it was then that likins realized that he may have to eventually deal with these proposals and perhaps may even have had to present them to the board of trustees this didn't fit m with his plans compton said it forced him to make an alternate proposal likins echoed these thoughts saying that he could see a confrontation com ing and didn't like that prospect adding that this confrontation would further delay the healthy transition to your shoulders or responsibility for your actions according to compton the ifc had earlier been asked by the forum to draw up a set of social standards when ifc officials met with likins after the amendments to the social regulations cleared the subcommittee likins sug gested that the ifc attempt to substitute that social code for the current regulations likins stated m his letter that the code must be approved m the sense that most of the students m every house next year subscribe to the plan and every new member who subsequently joins any lehigh fraternity explicitly accepts the code of fraternity conduct this would be an honor-bound commitment approved m each house by a majority which states yes this is a set of rules we can subscribe to he said however likins pointed out m his let ter that he cannot
