lehigh university brown and white vol 94 — no 12 bethlehem pa friday october 15 1982 215)861-4184 sigma phi dissolved members sought for 83 by michele gerencher the lehigh chapter of sigma phi society's alumni corporation has dis solved the current active chapter and is seeking to re-constitute new mem bership for the 1983-84 school year according to a written statement which was released wednesday by larry phi lippi assistant to the dean of students the alumni unilaterally have dis solved this chapter philippi said cur rent brothers will be permitted to live in the house until the end of this semester but the fraternity house will be closed for the spring semester he added philippi said the question of where the displaced brothers will live has not been resolved wednesday night sigma phi presi dent donald hohner 84 said he had not seen the statement and was not aware of its content as far as i know the chap ter has not been dissolved he said the alumni didn't do it the alumni refused to hohner said the house will be closed next semester for financial reasons there are only 10 brothers in the house he said and as a result the chap ter does not have enough money to main tain it it is notfeasible financially he added according to the statement the cur rent chapter was dissolved because of poor academic performance the lack of retention of recruited pledges a large 1981-82 deficit lack of funds in the cur rent membership to operate a kitchen and pay house utilities and possible irregularities in the pledging program hal fittapaldi a member of the alumni corporation said the decision to close the house for the spring semester was at this point almost an economic decision he said the corporation is in the midst of an alumni fund-raising drive which was started last april with the help of the university funds from the drive will be used to do internal renovations in the house fittapaldi said philippi said he could not comment on the house's finances but he said if they get 35 people their financial problems will disappear according to the writ ten statement the alumni hold the lease to the house and are responsible for its financial status the corporation hopes to raise 100,000 or 150,000 he said which should pay for a complete gutting of the inside and the purchase of all new furniture fitta paldi said the renovations will be started in spring and completed over the summer for the fall semester opening with the assistance of the dean of stu dents office the alumni will be recruit ing 35 new members to bring the house up to standard for the reopening according to the statement we would like to attract an already cohesive group " philippi said he added that the a lumni and the dean o f students office are hoping to recruit all four classes i do not want all freshmen the group of 35 will probably be recruited by lafayette weekend philippi said adding we're going 35 or forget it the alumni and deans of students office will provide organizational and ritual instruction for the fraternity according to the statement philippi added that the pledging program will be accelerated the group will be brothers by fall 1983 he said philippi said it should not be difficult to find 35 interested individuals this is a unique opportunity he added it's an opportunity to start their own fraternity establish their own traditions and create something new philippi discussed the opportunity to join sigma phi wednes day night at a scheduled interfraternity new fire-safety program to take effect by nov by michelle dumon the university will initiate a new sys tem of fire-safety procedures by november that will utilize the expertise r>f tf hh»ih»ii r depurrmcnl according to kurt salsburg assistant director of residence operations the bethlehem fire department and trained allied maintenance personnel will assist university officials in con ducting fire drills and regular inspec tions salsburg said altronics security systems the vendor currently employed by the university to perform similar functions will not receive a renewed contract later this month when its old one expires we've been reviewing our entire fire safety system salsburg said the university has been interested in getting the bethlehem fire department involved for two reasons first so they become more familiar with the buildings on campus and second because they have more expertise than university officials in recognizing fire-code viola tions he said e3 iie?l t*li momli til uhlvci-dlty li.nl the bethlehem fire department do a complete analysis of the residence halls salsburg said he went on to say that a report on the overall fire safety including some minor recommenda tions will be submitted to the office of physical planning four changes to the current system which include fire drills equipment inspections monthly inspections and annual inspections will be made in november according to warren soare associate dean for residence we will schedule drills with the local fire department in advance rather than just with campus police and resi dence operations soare said during the drills the uniformed firemen would be involved in spot-checking rooms for peo ple he said they can lend a hand spotting fire code violations and assist in educating i i i.i in . on uic impoituncc or it . i * i n i lit building during drills salsburg said the fire officials at the scene are city employees who have jurisdiction to issue their own citations and fines soare noted . university chief of police eugene dax added that students can be arrested for refusing to obey an official order under emergency conditions by for example not leaving the building the fire equipment in university buildings is currently inspected by altronics according to salsburg in the future however the bethlehem fire department will inspect equipment including section doors and heat sensors and will forward regular reports of prob lems to the university soare said the annual inspections of buildings and equipment for fire hazards will be conducted by a uniformed fire official and an allied maintenance employee " ll kftis l i-iiungc in emergency repairs for the system he added we're hoping that with the new sys tem we'll improve fire protection on campus soare said adding that all of this could save life limb and possessions good week speaking to classes visiting informally with students and faculty and sharing her view from the bench ifc withdraws proposals on social-regulation change by kathy goldstein the interfraternity council ifc social chairmen have withdrawn all but one of their social regulation proposals for further discussion within their organ ization according to greg schulze co chairman of the campus life committee of forum xiii all of the plans for possible revisions with the exception of a proposal to change happy hours to a two-hour period between 5 p.m and 7 p.m on fri days will be reconsidered within the ifc and then brought back to the forum's social regulations subcommittee schultz said at the subcommittee's meet ing on monday i think it is important that the propos als be back in the hands of the ifc before they get to the forum stage and before adversary positions develop william quay dean of students said after the discussion he suggested that bob fio retti 84 and seth berney 84 ifc representatives bring their proposals back for more discussion both within their organization and with faculty advisers and other representatives maybe the ifc could take it upon themselves to document statistics and come up with hard data to back their proposals he added in support of the current regulations quay cited the dramatic decline in police reports a terrific rush and the satisfaction he has seen by informally talking with students we have a good thing going and i'm not so sure we want to make changes he said politically we have to tread very very gently this early
