lehigh university brown and white vol 93 - no 15 bethlehem pa tuesday october 27 1981 215 861-4184 trustee study set for new research facility by sophia kladias at an oct 9 meeting the board of trustees announced its authorization of 50,000 for a site feasibility study to be performed for a proposed research building according to graduate student ed bogucz one of the forum's four trus tee representatives bogucz said that according to the physical planning and plant pp&p committee report officials m the office of research have put forth a com pelling case for a new building to house expanded research efforts of the mate rials research center and the center for surface coatings research it was reported that the two centers together account for nearly one-quarter of the university's total research according to bogucz the proposed building would be attached to either sin clair or whitaker and could cost 4 5 mil lion m 1984 dollars he said the administration expressed a firm position to the board that funds for the building must be obtained from sources other than the university's traditional benefactors stated simply the adminis tration said it will not allow this building to compete for funds with the three new century campaign phase ii projects already on the drawing boards bogucz said phase ii of the new century cam paign includes the library addition the physics building renovation/addition and the taylor hall renovations which have a total estimated cost of 16 million m 1984 dollars according to bogucz he said that development office of officials told the pp&p committee of the board that they believe they can raise 12.5 million for bricks and mortar pro jects during phase ii of the new century campaign if their expectations prove accurate some other or unexpected source of funding will be required if all three projects are to be completed by 1986 as the administration believes they must bogucz said that according to the pp&p committee report the quandary of estimated costs exceeding expected funds means that this is clearly not the time to generate new projects nor is it likely to be for some time thus propos als for projects not included m phase ii of the new century campaign such as the much-discussed arts center must wait to be considered for the new devel opment campaign which is likely to start m 1986 alternatively if a project that currently is not planned were to receive serendipitous support outside of the ongoing fund-raising activity it might be allowed to proceed before the next development campaign begins the purpose of the site feasibility study is to see whether or not it is possi ble to attach a 30,000 square foot building to whitaker or sinclair m a way that would make architectural and aesthetic sense said eric ottervik vice presi dent of administration and planning according to ottervik some of the appropriated funds will be used to explore other ways of raising funds he said that negotiations with architects will take place to determine the cost of the study which will begin immediately ottervik said that a need for any other building plans including any arts pro jects would have to be expressed to the board and the forum and gain their approval these projects unless they found new sources of funds would have to compete with already approved new century campaign phase ii projects according to ottervik ottervik said this building will not compete with other buildings for funds adding that the research building will not go ahead until it gets its own money if a site study of the research building proves to be feasible joseph goldstein professor of metallurgy and assistant vice president of research said he believes that some of the building funds will be raised through the development office but funds available for the three new century campaign phase ii pro jects would not be tapped goldstein said the major impact a new research building would have is m the graduate education area because it would enable 15 to 20 new graduate stu dents to do their own thesis work it will also consolidate several research pro grams currently spread all over the campus according to goldstein the research building would benefit undergraduates m two ways there would be two class rooms for undergraduate use and many of the laboratories m this building would also house undergraduate teaching laboratories he said the building would be a major expansion of our research activity m materials and m cor rosion goldstein added smoking b&w photo by doug grandin singer bob dylan adorned m it off until we were able to deal with the year's proposals he added he explained that there was a sharp difference of opinion at the meeting regarding student representation we were basically against it because we felt that the committee was large enough and we didn't want to make it any larger he said if it is too large then we can't decide things m a timely manner according to lindgren the
