cyanide president and richard heilman m e june 47 was elected secretary-treasurer of the organization after the dinner rev bean faculty advisor of the society spoke about the necessity of aiding freshmen and other new students during their first few weeks at lehigh and stressed the point that it is cyanide's chief purpose to help new students not tell them what they must not do the following juniors were ini tiated into cyanide al granese lawrence moretz and dick heil man debating society to conduct competitions the debating society announces that it will conduct competitions for the williams prizes in extem pore speaking and intramural de bating to be held this semester further information about these competitions will appear in suc ceeding issues of the brown and white the first regularly sched uled meeting of the debating so ciety will be held thursday july 11 in drown hall at 4 30 p m to join the club the constitution provides that there shall be a 10 initiation fee and that each mem ber shall buy a share in the club to be refunded when he leaves the club or when he graduates the value of the share is 40 and may be bought on an installment plan of 5 a month flying time costs 3 an hour compared to 11 an hour at commercial airports in this vicinity a pre-flight school is planned to familiarize every club member with the fundamental theories of flight navigation meteorology and acquaint him with the civil aero nautics regulations the flight pro pre-flight school planned the brown and white may now be obtained in any building on campus please take only one bethlehem pa wednesday july 10 1946 5 cents at the town council outdoor dance vol liii no 29 prof davis heads mustard & cheese mustard and cheese lehigh's dramatic society held its initial meeting of the semester on mon day july 8 new officers elected were as follows albert maccau ley president jon epstein vice president mark russel business manager and seymour glatzer secretary mustard and cheese will func tion under the supervision of a new faculty advisor professor davis of the english department and professor and mrs wallis of mount holyoke college professor davis is anxious to get an early start he announced that tryouts will begin on thurs day friday and monday july 11 12 and 15 respectively at four o'clock in christmas saucon hall in room 312 new action on vets housing of the 1835 students now at le high 602 are living in the dormi tories 155 in drinker 47 in price 200 in richards and 210 in tay lor there are 40 vacancies at present as some men have moved into fraternities the housing sit uation at the beginning of the semester was so acute that the university set up 50 temporary cot in taylor gym for the use of students unable to find immediate living quarters however only two or three men were unlucky enough to have to use these beds — and then only for a few days the present vacancies are in suite rooms that are not usually used as bedroom and are being used only during the present housing short age barracks on campus negotiations are now under way with the national housing agen cy of the federal government to secure temporary dwelling units to be erected on the lehigh cam pus if plans materialize living quarters will be made available for 120 students this fall andrew w litzenberger super intendent of buildings and grounds has been in pittsburgh this week making an inspection of the type of dwelling units avail able during the present emer gency work started monday on the erection of seven barrack-type units on the south side of steel field these buildings will pro vide 28 unfurnished apartments for veterans of the university when the fall semester opens each building will contain four apart ments it is expected that build ing and landscaping will require 90 days outdoor hop highlighted by gay floor show 100 couples attend town council's novel dance with about a hundred couples enjoying the balmy summer night town council launched its sum mer dance program on saturday july 6 at drown hall the dance held outdoors on the rear terrace of the building lasted until mid night and was chaperoned by the rev george m bean at 9:30 a floor show by miss evelyn hess of bethlehem was presented for the entertainment of the dancers the cast of the show consisted of eighteen youthful stu dents of bethlehem high school and lasted for a half hour miss erna lutz also of bethlehem pro vided a musical background for the dancing and other novelty acts record dance master of ceremonies gene sowers conducted several games and presented prizes to the win ners among the games played were musical chairs pass the box dance eliminations and a cakewalk al weasner operated the public address system and am plifier providing the dancers with the best in recent recorded music free refreshments were served throughout the evening by ken bears at the refreshment counter the terrace was decorated by mr and mrs george horneck and the theme of the crepe paper de corations centered around the fourth of july arrangement for delivery of refreshments prepara tion of the dance floor etc were completed by lewis milligan and john hendricks with the coopera tion of mr litzenberger terming the dance a great suc cess howard ullman president of the council announced that the next dance on the schedule will be held on saturday august 3 ac cording to the farmers almanac a clear sky and a new moon are promised for this next affair new rotc policy is announced non-vet students may receive army payments postwar policy concerning the r o t c as announced by the war department has been receiv ed by colonel p l sadler profes sor of military science and tactics at lehigh university it is expec ted that the new program will go into effect at lehigh with the stan of the fall term of 1946 insofar aa existing national laws and approj priations will permit the program as outlined in the war department announcement is che result of a three-months studj by the war department durini which time a number of civiliar educators and military authorities were consulted the approved pro gram provides for military train ing in two divisions the junioi rotc at approximately the sec ondary level and the senior rotc at the junior college and colleg level new senior program the senior rotc progran which would be organized at le high university would consist o two parts known as the elemen tary course and the advance course the latter including a sum mer camp this course will carr the mission into the training o junior officers who have qualitie and
