the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 103 no 14 tuesday october 31 1995 all the lehigh news first vigil held to protest sexual violence by kathy calogredes news writer a crowd of students faculty and staff members concerned about women affected by sexual assault gathered at lookout point thursday for the second annual take back the night march the march was created to remember lehigh women who have been assaulted and raped and to stop violence against women everywhere each person who participated m the march down to packer chapel held a small white candle and a line of small candles lined the lookout wall lehigh health educator marie cristy said the significance of the candles was to shed some light on domestic violence and sexual assault the crowd gathered around the recently planted tree a memorial to mary orlando and jennifer grider to hear introductory speeches from tori bronaugh a counselor from the counseling ser vice lehigh president peter likins and university chaplain lloyd steffen likins said he was happy to see so many mem bers of the lehigh community who care about domestic violence m the vigil there are lots of men and women involved which is part of a changing attitude at lehigh likins said for me this particular statement has a special significance at lehigh because of the vio lence done to women m this community i am pleased to see lehigh students show so much con cern about gender-based violence baw photo by eleni andriolatos students carry candles m the take back the night vigil and march thursday planning groups merge to improve efficiency by phil repash news writer the student activities council late night at lehigh and the stage door will soon merge into an all inclusive organization for on-cam pus programming the new group does not have a name yet but will be m place by the spring semester timothy mccann 97 a mem ber of the stage door said i think this is an excellent opportunity to reduce the excesses and redundan cies among the three groups by next semester the new orga nization will provide the four tradi tional activities the groups now pro vide independently along with film comedy music and novelty pro gramming there will also be excur sions and fine arts suzanne kilgannon student ac tivities coordinator said exactly what fine arts will entail hasn't been determined yet but excursions will provideof f-campus trips for students alexis minervino ' 97 president of late night at lehigh said the objective is to bring as much pro gramming as possible to lehigh by pulling our resources to gether we will be able to do that a lot better minervino said one of the major reasons for the merger is the redundancy of public ity among the three separate groups minervino said the combined group will make the advertising pro cess more efficient at this point i think there are so many posters around campus that everyone has become poster-blind minervino said with this merger we can now put out a weekly poster containing all the events on campus kilgannon said the three organi zations spend a lot of time and money trying to define themselves as sepa rate from one another the members of the groups stud ied the programming structures and constitutions of other universities including providence college bucknell university and duke uni versity to determine the most effi cient cost-effective means by which to maximize student activities and minimize needless competition and excessive spending mccann said the merger will make the organization more acces sible to the student body than the three separate groups one of the problems we had was that people with good ideas for activities didn't know where to sub mit them mccann said karaoke night kicks off class gift campaign by molly mag inn news writer the senior class gift campaign kicked off its annual fund drive thursday with karaoke night at the comfort suites from 9 p.m to mid night more than 200 members of the senior class came to sing karaoke take advantage of the beer specials and donate their money to the university the campaign executive board had a dinner wednesday with president peter likins and then held the kick-off party thursday to begin the task of raising funds for the class gift there are three different dona tion plans the most popular plan involves a 100 pledge over the next five years the first install ment is $ 10 and the gift increases m 5 increments every year for the next four years last year 73 percent of the ba w photo by michelle lieyse seniors share their talents at
