of the lehigh valley see page 4 pi kappa alpha fraternity held its annual pike dream girl contest benefiting the american red cross thursday night in packard lab auditorium the contest took place over a week after the original date which had been set during greek week because the auditorium was double-booked in past years a portion of the proceeds from the contest was donated to the american red crass with the remaining money distributed to several other organizations this year and in the future see pike page 5 however the pike brothers will donate all of the money raised from the event to the red cross in appreciation for the help they provided the fraternity after a fire destroyed their house last year mark osier 98 a brother in pike is grateful for the aid the red cross provided add che 234 process/plant design 11 as an additional requirement they were told of the change only four days before preregistration we knew absolutely nothing about it patrick fischer 97 said we weren't too happy either because a lot of the majors had already fulfilled their gradua tion requirements prior to the change only che 233 \ i process/plant design i was required the new course would count toward the majors nine sci ence/non-departmental engineer see curriculum page 5 with the freshman class fischer said the basic principle behind the change was wrong the entire time we were here it's been engraved in the guidebook as to what we need to take to graduate he said to change it three-quarters of the way through our years at lehigh is just wrong ryan decided to formulate a petition highlighting the stu ing credits reducing that number to six james ryan 97 had ful filled his six non-departmental requirements and had planned on taking a different course for his remaining three science credits in order to structure his schedule around business courses a was unfair in the timing and the way they wei about telling us ryan said it would have been easier had they started the chapel before the lights dimmed was one of great enthusiasm i feel like i am part of a special unit when i'm in front of the audience with the choir joon shin 97 said shin not only enjoys the unity of the choir but is passionate about the piece they performed this music not only makes us think about the person who died but also makes us question our mortality he said i think we can all agree that it is a very deep and pro found piece the music at the concert varied from deep and low pitched vocals and instrumen tals to high and powerful crescendos involv ing the choruses soloists and orchestras at the same time the four professional soloists were carl tanner tenor mark doss bass jeanette thompson soprano and eugenie grunewald mezzo-soprano their graceful yet powerful voices sup plemented the sounds of the chorus and orchestra brought out the splendor in the music and filled the room with excitement the lehigh university choir along with the choral union the concord chamber singers and four professional soloists lit up packer memorial chapel with guiseppe verdi's messa de requiem friday night the choir hasn't wasted a minute since returning from its week-long tour in florida over a month ago it has been practicing for at least six to eight hours a week the choral ajnion which consists of community members and faculty conducted two-and-a-half-hour practices once a week during he semester charles ochman 97 a member of the university choir said it was quite a feat to coordinate themselves with the chorus the soloists and the orchestra i felt the supplemental voices and instru mentals took the performance to another level ochman said despite the fact that the artists were about to sing for 90 minutes straight the feeling out and uplifting spirits performing with these soloists is very exhilarating for us and adds a great deal of energy and authenticity to the piece shin said a senior member of the choir melanie walsh 96 was honored to perform with professionals it was a pleasure as an undergraduate stu dent to perform with such amazing soloists she said i did not realize the intensity of the music until after the performance tonight walsh was also disappointed that this was her last concert at lehigh i feel the choral program just keeps on getting better every year " she said although the chorus and administrators are eager to move productions like requiem into the zoellner arts center next year there is certainly no lack of beauty in the sounds reverberated within the walls of packer chapel walsh said there is nothing like a
