faculty votes for pre-war houseparty schedule 2 two-night affairs per year tackling its most difficult problems of the summer semester ar cadia with bill boothby presiding plunged into the all-important houseparty issue questions and proposals were submitted to dean wray h congdon who attended the meeting held in the arcadia room of drown hall on september 5 under boothby's questioning dean congdon revealed that the fac ulty had voted to reinstate the houseparty on a pre-war basis there will be two houseparties per year one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester housepar ties are two night affairs starting friday evening and lasting until sunday afternoon under this plan there will be no more overnight dances after this semester there will be however saturday night dances to which the student body can bring dates and take them home after the dance mr booth by stressed the fact that there will be two houseparties a year as there were in the past at the meeting the arcadia cabinet voted to have the first post-war houseparty sometime in the fall semester probably in the latter part of november the ar cadia dance committee has not as yet assigned the houseparty to any living group or organization boothby plans to announce this shortly the sept 22 dance will be on the same basis as the palm prom an over-night affair dean congdon was very helpful in clar ifying the houseparty rulings the houseparty before the war started on friday night when smaller parties put on by the in dividual living groups were held students took their dates to classes on saturday morning and there were varying activities in the af ternoon the big university-wide dance was held on saturday night and the girls returned home some time sunday the new housepar ties will follow this pattern the next problem taken up at the meeting was that of selecting deserving students for the who's who among college students all over the country it was decided that as in the past the students would be chosen by a secret stu dent-faculty committee prof c g beardslee faculty adviser of the student governing cabinet is chairman of this committee a final report of the arcadia dance committee on the palm prom showed a profit of 186.71 boothby reported the executive committee of arcadia was drawing up a petition stating the student body's wishes for a longer christ mas vacation it is hoped by boothby that the petition can be submitted to the dean of under graduates sometime this week chuck hafner reported on a meeting which he and dick mc adams had with mr warren york lehigh valley alumni agent about continued on page 2 have received from the peoples of this country unhesitating support in such extraordinary authority during these four years we have transferred our objectives from normal pursuits to the develop ment and exercise of bestial cun ning and brute force as a people we have cooperated an irresponsi ble obedience to authority now through the efforts and by the sacrifice of our brothers our sons and our fellow citizens serv ing in the armed forces an un wanted and wholly loathsome war has come to the end of military operations in the exaltation of victory we do not propose to evade the retribution which is ours as well as the retribution for our enemy a sober consideration of the meaning of this day empha sizes the necessity for an orderly return to democratic processes we recognize the complete neces sity of our developing a sincere and dependable self-control we welcome the restoration of a sense it is altogether fitting and ap propriate that an institution dedi cated to the furtherance of truth and human understanding should gather for this observance of the victory of our armed forces in an unwelcome war approximately four years have intervened be tween that day in december 1941 styled by the late president roose velt a day of infamy to the day styled by president truman as the day of retribution for many of the current students of lehigh university those four years repre sent one fifth of an entire life and more than half of the experiences which they recall most vividly during those four years we have tended to become accustomed and habituated to concentration of authority and responsibility high officers in the armed forces and civilian officers of government have very properly and be chosen sept 20 committee appeals to alumni association for consideration of recreational issue election of the five-man committee on classes will be held on sep tember 20 and 21 it was decided by the arcadia cabinet at its last meeting point lists of perspective candidates are being called for in this issue of the brown and white all men who are in their sth 6th and 7th semesters interested in running for office should have their lists turned in to the arcadia office by 9:00 a.m monday morning sep tember 17 the b&w of september 19 will publish the names of the if presents huge affair the interfraternity council is sponsoring a dance on saturday night sept 22 the affair will be held in grace hall and will last from 9 p.m till 1 a.m the haverfordians will fur nish the dancing and listening en tertainment this orchestra under the leadership of rice longaker has built up quite a reputation for itself in popular music circles in the quaker city the individual fraternity houses will as usual run their parties on saturday night there will be no fraternity affair on friday night but there will be a student con cert-lecture offering scl has ar ranged for a concert by that well known concert pianist rosalyn tureck if any lehigh students wish to attend the performance with or without their dates ad mittance will be free upon pre sentation of either their bursar's receipt or athletic ticket ! the arranging of all the details were taken care of by the dance committee of the interfraternity council this committee is in re ality the executive committee of i-f the group consists of mcl ramberg president of i-f rich ard craig of sigma phi epsilon al goodman of pi lambda phi and sam shepherd of delta tau delta the dance is being held on the usual dance floor that is the top floor of grace hall it is the hope of the council that instead of the tread of marching feet the soft shuffling of hundreds of dancers will pervade the scene m&c to play host to student nurses mustard and cheese club will be hosts to a unit of st luke's hospital nurses for the grand opening of snafu to be given at the civic theatre on the old york road this performance on sept 26 will have an early curtain at 7:30 p.m to accommodate the off duty leisure hours of the nurses corps students desiring seats for this special performance may ap ply for the few remaining seats to david gerb at tau delta phi allen goodman president of the mustard and cheese club de clares that rehearsals have been progressing well and that with the adidtions of francis kelley mcclay who will play the comedy role of aunt emily and claire craft who plays an australian bound for her married life to a g.1 the cast is now complete don shettel stage manager for the club urges all who have had any electrical or president to succeed harry kern who graduates next year shook son of professor shook of the math department is a ch.e class of 46 at a meeting held last week the committee also agreed to engage quartet for a september en gagement the quartet drew near ly 12,000 people in a two-night stand in allentown last fall the lectures and concerts are fi nanced by money in a fund at the disposal of the committee stu dents pay 1.00 into the fund at the start of each semester the committee is composed of mcl ramberg dick craig ronald jeff ries and dick mac adams faculty members are dr shields profes sor shook and registrar curtis e k smiley addresses lehigh students attending v-j day services in packer students running for election along with their activity lists on the two election days sep tember 20 and 21 there will be a picture of each candidate along with his name and activities at each voting place boothby ap pointed john hanley to secure the photographs of the candidates all men running for the five-man committee are requested to report to the brown and white office at 12:30 p.m monday september 17 to have their pictures taken for the campaign publicity balloting places assigned on the election days there will be three balloting places on the campus they will be outside of drinker hall at the flag-pole and in the hallway of the supply bu reau the same type of ballot slip will be used as was used last sem ester voters should check only five names on their ballot it is a secret ballot an election committee com posed of roland savidge as chair man bob ochs and don wolf has been appointed to run the election and count the ballots the new five-man committee will be announced in the b&w on september 26 arcadia urges that every student vote since these men will represent him in all student affairs committee appeals to alumni the five-man committee on classes on continuing the efforts of arcadia to have a recreation center constructed on the lehigh campus on september 4 dick mcadams and chuck hafner in terviewed mr york lehigh valley alumni agent and discussed with him the possibility of alumni sup port of this project previous to this discussion with mr york the five-man commit tee had planned only to appeal for the construction of a soda foun tain mr york however told mr mcadams and mr hafner that it was not the policy of an alumni group as great as that of lehigh to appeal for only 4,000 the esti mated cost of a soda bar after the discussion with mr york mr hafner and mr mcadams advised the five-man committee to bring to the attention of lehigh alumni trustees and administration heads the need of a lehigh union act ing on the basis of the reports of the arcadia-drown hall house committee and soda fountain continued on page 3 of personal responsibility for our daily lives and for the selection of our own ideals brown and white and if this day of retribution means a significant change of the habits which we have formed dur ing four years of irresponsible conformity to higher authorities it can be no less a change in the institution which we support and of which we are necessarily a part lehigh university in observing the day of retribution recognizes the great responsibility borne by an institution which has achieved distinction in the education of youth lehigh recognizes the over whelming deficit which our coun try has incurred during four years of warfare — a deficit estimated by competent authority to represent the lack of 150,000 students who have been prevented by the war from completing undergraduate training
