traditional awards given by manning three men enrolled in the engi neering curriculum at lehigh uni versity were tapped into tau beta pi honorary engineering society last monday noon ed luckenbach chem e feb 46 edwin f seasholtz e p oct 46 and wm dashifisky e p oct 46 were pinned with the tradi tional brown and white colors of the organization by ed manning e e feb 46 president of the group the ceremonies took place in front of the tau bete monument which is situated in front of wil liams hall the monument is a large rock upon which is a bronze tablet the installation was a pro ject of the society in its early days and was made possible through the assistance of the weil memorial company in the words of its constitution tau beta pi proposes to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as un dergraduates or by their attain ments as alumni and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in the en gineering schools of america tau beta pi was founded at le high a little over 50 years ago at that time there was no honorary society by which outstanding en gineering students could be recog nized prof edward williams jr con ceived the idea of such a society in the early 1880's finally in may 1885 after he had finished draw ing up all the ritual and consti tution he shared his idea with irving andrew heikes who was the valedictorian for 1885 early in june heikes was initiated and tau beta pi became a part of the undergraduate world professor williams felt that character as well as high scholas tic standing should form a part of the eligibility code candidates for membership must thus satisfy re quirements not only as to scholar ship but also with respect to stead iness honesty and dependability tau beta pi strives to recognize outstanding engineering students by those qualities which seem to destine them for success in later life and to give those it honors a code of ethics which will hold the ideal of fairness and cooperation before the business world tau beta pi has grown with the spread of engineering education until there are now 69 active chap ters and over 26,000 members dance hailed huge success arcadia's gala social event of the semester the palm prom was held last saturday evening in race hall from 10 until 2 dick macadams chairman of the dance committee hailed the dance as a huge success approximately 150 couples danced to the smooth music of ken keely and his famous orchestra fresh from an engagement on steel pier terry o'day keely's photo genic songstress charmed the audience with her sweet rendi tions of torch numbers support ing miss o'day on the vocals was the maestro himself ken keely during intermission richard c fuehrer lehigh's own magician entertained the audience with his baffling feats of magic highlight ing the show was the famous wrist guillontine act in which mr fuehrer sliced a carrot in two without cutting off the hand of the unfortunate victim selected from the audience the dance floor was beautifully decorated with palms strewn at various places throughout the hall and topping off the decorations were luxurious green carpets spread over the bandstand navy announces new v-5 quota the navy has recently an nounced a new quota for class v-5 flight training for 17 and 18 year old boys who have finished their high school work by october 1945 candidates who are found quali fied will be enlisted at once but will not be ordered to active duty until november 1 1945 at which time they will begin two and one half years of training including three semesters of college the qualifications for applicants are as follows minimum age must be 17 maximum 18 must not reach 19th birthday before no vember 1 1945 must have been a citizen of the united states for ten year must be unmarried and agree to remain unmarried until commissioned must have been graduated from high school may be enrolled at college should have at least two years of mathe matics including elementary alge bra and plane geometry must be at least 5 ft 4 in and not more than 6 ft 4 in tall must have eye sight in each eye not less than 20/20 uncorrected must have at least 18 sound vital teeth with at least two concluding molars and no dental cavities a candidate who meets the re quirements as outlined may make application by writing to the of fice of naval officer procurement navy department philadelphia 3 pa 6th floor 1600 arch street stating that he meets the qualifi cations and desires to make an ap pointment to take the qualifying examinations he may also sug gest a date convenient to him for coming to philadelphia bethlehem pa wednesday august 8 1945 vol lii no 48 b&w corrects chapel article in an article last week the brown and white erroneously re ported that the student chapel committee headed by mcl ram berg was working to bring sun day services to the university chapel on monday mr ramberg is sued the following statement re garding the mistake and also the affairs of his committee the student chapel committee by no means wishes to commit it self to sunday services services may be held on any day of the week appropriate and best suited to student interests the commit tee hopes to announce its plans in the near future the committee feels free at this time to assure the student body that services will not be of a compulsory nature the student chapel committee is trying to carry out a difficult assignment and with the whole hearted support of the student body will be successful the b & w will be glad to print any let ters reflecting campus opinion con cerning the opening of the chapel price 5 cents there are positions for those in terested in the business and tech nical ends also don shettel is the man to see for the technical side of the presentation while dave gerb will take charge of the busi ness involved the parts open are danny the 18 year old pal of ronny the sen ator who tries to help ronny in his readjustment ronny's father ben davis the high school princi pal colonel west the officer in charge of ronny's decoration three legionnaires and others the female parts will be played by lo cal talent as the play opens the family is gathered in anticipation of the boy's arrival the subsequent dif ficulties which ronny experiences in adjusting himself to civilian life give the play its color and humor ronny has troubles with every one from his high school princi pal to his ex-girl friend snafu which means situa tion normal all fouled up was a tremendous success on broadway the play concerns itself with the adventures of ronny a 16 year old boy who after joining the army at 14 by lying about his age was sent to the south pacific in the midst of fighting the japs ron ny is pulled out of action by his c o who has received a letter from ronny's mother telling of his under age ronny is discharged against his will and is sent home tryouts will be held this thurs day evening august 9 at 7:30 in drown hall the play will be di rected by prof and mrs albert rights and there is a great variety of parts for all those interested the mustard and cheese club has selected snafu the recent broadway hit for this semester's production the play will be pre sented in the civic theatre on or about september 16 and it will run four nights m&c club to use civic theatre in september snafu play trials to be held aug 9 prof larkin greets asme on august 2 the lehigh chapter of the american society of me chanical engineers held its initial meeting of the semester in pack ard lab the meeting was held mainly in order to unite the mechanical en gineering freshmen and introduce them to their departmental facul ty mcl ramberg the newly elected president of the asme chapter asked professor larkin to welcome the freshmen personally professor larkin not only wel comed the frosh but also intro duced to them mr hartman a le high graduate who after working for the ingersoll-rand company for several years has come back to lehigh to become a part-time teacher and graduate student professor larkin also introduced prof milton stewart the thermo dynamics expert of the me staff mr clewell the department's ma chinist who was just discharged from the navy and naturally ann and elsie the features of the evening in cluded a talk by professor stew art on several illustrative samples of steam engines which were set up and a talk by mr hartman on his experiences while working for ingersoll-rand the point which mr hartman most emphasized was that an engineer may not be narrow-minded for no matter what field he specialized in he would invariably be confronted with a situation which would or dinarily be the job of an engineer of a different curriculum the evening was topped off by a movie illustrating the process of steel manufacture right from the iron ore to the completed product the pleasingly large audience was then treated to the customary re freshments the meetings great success was fortunately not infringed upon by the nearby sham battle and the constant noise of machine guns and mortar fire alumnus car is wrecked in crash two lehigh students john egan and fred stoll an alumnus robert schafer of snyder n v and their three dates were injured early saturday morning in an ac cident near the chi psi house on the lehigh campus one girl miss nina beier sustained rather ser ious injuries while the rest of the occupants escaped with little in jury the accident occurred when robert schafer driver of the car continued on page 3 veterans display combat technique brown & white lehigh university at 4 o'clock on august 2 army planes flooded taylor stadium and vicinity with leaflets advertising an army demonstration and dis play of equipment at the stadium that evening soldiers tossed red yellow and green smoke bombs near the stands to open the western rail road review the show was in tended to aid recruitment of men for railroad work particularly on the west coast where 65,000 work ers are needed after the smoke had cleared combat veterans one of whom had been overseas 56 months displayed various guns continued on page 4 tau beta pi taps three in ceremony no b&w next week next week there will be no b&w because of mid-semesters it has been decided to cut out issues this summer whenever there is too heavy a load of schoohvork on staff members reporters are reminded that there will be no assignments posted in drown hall this week
