cadet receives rotc platoon leadership award by scott goldman news writer malcolm cornish 95 a cadet in the u.s army reserve officers training corps received the platoon leadership award for his excellent performance at advanced rotc camp this summer the platoon leadership award is presented to the top cadet at camp in order to qualify the cadet must be ranked as the best cadet in his pla toon a group of 43 men cornish was ranked against his peers on such points as tactical and technical ability physical fitness and excellence in performing his duties these qualifications along with oth ers made up 16 different dimensions that the cadets were evaluated on evaluations can be either out standing excellent satisfactory or unsatisfactory most of cornish's evaluations had to be in either the outstanding or the excellent catego ries for him to qualify for the award cornish joined the rotc as a sophomore and has worked hard to catch up in the program he attended basic camp after his sophomore year and received an rotc scholarship he attended advanced camp between his junior and senior year baw photo by kirsten rokita malcolm cornish 95 serious commitment to the army cornish said i didn't want to sit here 10 years from now and say i didn't give it a shot cornish described the time com mitment in rotc as being similar to the time commitment involved in a varsity sport as a cadet cornish must wake up early for physical train ing attend a rotc lab session and usually spend one day on the week ends devoting time to the rotc this year cornish is serving as his battalion s executive officer this position places him as the person second in command of the entire battalion the work ethic and personality of cornish are reflected in the opinions of his colleagues he is a very up beat positive individual capt kevin f elliott of lehigh's rotc program said he's ready to do whatever is asked of him whenever it is asked of him and do it in a superb manner bill camp 97 anyone they suspect does not go to lehigh shupp said if people call us our response time will be much faster other than that we've increased the manpower on the hill and we've stationed some officers at points where we believe people are sneak ing on to campus shupp said some senators were also curious about what was being done with other police are taking to minimize the problem last weekend we increased the size of the manpower on the hill and we asked people if we could see lehigh id shupp said we did find some people who were not le high students and we escorted them off campus christine stackpole 96 senate parliamentarian invited shupp to the meeting and led the questioning for the senators inquiring what new measures were taken by campus po lice last weekend to solve the vio with rumors running rampant around campus about different vio lent acts occurring on the hill re cently the student senate decided to address the issue of non-lehigh stu dents trespassing on campus during the weekends lt edward shupp associate di rector of campus police was invited to tuesday's senate meeting to clear up any rumors and to inform the senators of any measures the campus brown and white all the lehigh news first lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 friday october 7 1994 vol 102 no 9 renovations for new cafe to expand meal selection for students by meredith abrams news writer center will be located half of the current post office location will be converted into a snack area selling items such as cinnamon buns soft pretzels and frozen yogurt the other half will become the new south mountain gold office food items may still be paid for with cash meal plan south mountain gold and south mountain gold plus kevin gordon general manager of dining services believes that the renovations will open up the area for easier access the entire second floor of the uc will look like one continuous facility gordon said gordon hopes the plans will increase the use of lehigh food services we'll have the ability to service students at various hours throughout the day gordon said we will be able to offer more points of service and more variety we hope to take some of the pressure off downstairs and with the new food court there will be no more waiting in lines at least in food services a major renovation for the lehigh cafe has been discussed for many years the current facility is roughly 30 years out of date lam bert said major renovations to the university cen ter including the lehigh cafe grace lounge and the post office are planned to begin in december and be completed by july of 1995 according to tom lambert resident dis trict manager of dining services plans for the renovation include changing the area which is now the lehigh cafe into a burger king ex pressway a new york-style deli and a phila delphia cheesesteak shop buckets a shop selling food items such as french fries and mozzarella sticks and pannini's which will offer european sandwiches salads and home made soups will also be included in the new food court seating in the current cafe will be removed to make room for the changes we will offer seating in grace lounge lambert said there will be additional cafe style seating on the porch in front of grace lounge the post office will be moved to upper grace hall where the new ulrich student please see cafe page 5 are tailored specifically to the lehigh commu nity based on surveys and years of feedback collected by the dining committee gordon said a contest for the student body will be held to come up with a name for the new food court new dining facilities will also be added in the grace hall student center such as a sand wich shop called subversions mark kopenhaver genera manager of dining ser the committee in charge of the renova tions which consists of lehigh students and faculty has surveyed the lehigh student body three times a year for the last few years and their findings have had a major influence
