mr ellis lehr tells of great benefits in the arcadia room monday night the george oliver ellstrom veterans society heard an address by mr c ellis lehr commander of the bethlehem chapter of the american legion mr lehr began his talk with an account of the foundation and or ganization of the american legion in 1918-1919 he told the group that the function of the legion is to protect the rights of all veterans and do all it can to make sure that every veteran especially any disabled vet will have a chance to get a job and earn a decent liv ing g i bill of rights the american legion takes credit for the q i bill of rights and with its lobbying committee in washington it has backed many other measures for hospitalization and pension for vets before the war the legion fought for a larger navy selective service and extension of the r o t c mr lehr invited any vets to join the american legion the older members want these young men to come into the organization and take over he said that every vet should belong to some vet erans organization at the present time president truman and most of our leaders in congress are members of the american legion state trying 1 to help veterans he spoke of the bill which is in the state legislature now which will give each veteran up to 300 for his service he warned the men however that all the prom ises which have been made can't possibly be fulfilled the legion fights for veterans bonuses but at the same time it fights inflation and many of the veterans bills which have been introduced would destroy the american economy the veterans club has had sev eral measures on the fire during the past month one is the selec tion of keys with the official in signia of the club eight frosh reprimanded of the 14 freshmen who were on trial last week before cyanide 8 were convicted and sentenced to work on memorial lane saturday the 14th the freshmen were rounded up on the basis of failing to wear the traditional brown hat socks and tie frosh work on memorial lane six of the convicted showed up saturday at 1:30 p.m at memorial lane and were immediately put to work by dick mcadams and jack shipherd the two cyanide mem bers present the punishment con sisted of raising the memorial rocks so that they would be no ticeable a complete sweeping of the lane and the placing of gravel around each tree to protect the monuments the work done by the guilty new lehigh men served to im prove the condition of memorial lane the monuments were slowly sinking and disappearing from view after considerable time and ef fort the 50-pound monuments were elevated six inches the lane which leads from the side of the chemistry building to directly in front of taylor gymnasium is completely covered by trees and quite naturally leaves and twigs are always abundant on the lane however the sweeping remedied this situation the two men that were absent last saturday will not escape the clutches of cyanide and will be assigned their duties next week the six freshmen that were pres ent were treated to cokes by cy anide so that they could with stand the tremendous strain of lift ing the one fortieth of a ton mon uments rain put an end to the activities at about 5:30 continued on page 4 mustard & cheese to present play at the meeting of mustard and cheese last wednesday night president al goodman disclosed that four plays were under con sideration for production by the dramatic society this semester the final selection of the play which will probably run for four nights will be announced in the next issue of the brown and white either kiss and 1 tell a com edy-farce which had a long run on broadway snafu the story of a 16-year old returning veteran out of the frying pan concern ing a group of actors in greenwich village or laburnum grove a detective story will be presented by the society early in september tone meets friday considers new men tone will hold its first big meeting this friday night in drown hall at 7:30 the purpose of the meeting is to organize and to recruit some new men into the group tone is designed for those lehigh men who are interested in classical music the activities of tone consist of programs every two or three weeks dealing with several selec tions taken from the classics usually doctor shields attends and does the interpreting for the benefit of the members of tone if tone grows strong enough they have plans to return to the former custom of presenting pub lic programs these programs might either be recitals by some members of tone itself or the playing of records these pro grams took place in the chapel and will probably be held there again if the opportunity presents itself all freshmen at all interested in classical music are urged to at tend this meeting friday night the primary requisite for joining tone is a theme on any one of the three concepts of tone the con cepts are interpretation compo sition and appreciation the es say can be from 200 to 700 words in length and it is on the basis of the theme that the members of the group can judge an aspirant worthy of joining bethlehem pa wednesday july 18 1945 vol lii — no 45 cyanide's bad boys dick frankenfield bob saydah bob katz larry roseman and ed hall left to right have a workout on memorial walk last saturday afternoon the party was given by cyanide for those boys who failed to live up to freshman regula tions we dinks you'd better wear your dinks men all in all the dance promises to be quite a big thing so remember the place is grace hall the date is august 4 and the time is 10 o'clock in addition this dance will have an added attraction for the first time the top floor of grace hall will not be left bare the dance committee has decided that this time it will have the hall decor ated the committee for this dance has been selected and includes the following men dick macadams chairman allen goodman in charge of advertising don shet tel in charge of concessions jack shipherd in charge of the band and bill boothby ex-officio mem ber all persons interested in ob taining concessions should contact don shettel at 6-7251 this date was chosen as ideal for the first dance since it will give everyone plenty of time to notify his girl and make all other arrangements decorated dance floor august 4th to feature on august 4 grace hall will once more play host to lehigh men and their dates grace hall to be scene of dance price 5 cents business staff offers jobs the business department of the brown and white is in need of men to sell advertising since the business staff is at present reduced there are great opportunities for advancement this is a fine chance for new lehigh men to get acquainted with the campus and fellow students it is also a marvelous opportunity for men to meet and sell advertising to the prominent merchants of the city a good man is also needed to fill the staff position of copy su pervisor these positions have to be filled many boothby debators set july 20 for forum on hayek professor diamond head of economics department will act as chairman on economic-planning issue delta omicron theta announces its change of plans to hold the debate on professor hayek's road to serfdom originally planned for july 13 to friday july 20 in the browsing room of the uhiver sity library at 7:30 p.m john tuberty president of the debating so ciety declared that the debate should hold more than usual interest for faculty and students since the club will hold open forum on the provocative issues of the question under the guidance of prof herbert diamond head of the economics department who will act as chair man for the evening to stimulate audience reception of ideas a novel plan has been evolved to aid the debaters for the evening john tuberty and john hanley upholding the affir mative side and richard mac adams and malcolm schvey maintaining the negative point of view will present their arguments in a formal debate then there will be a critical analysis offered of their points of view by robert woodward of bethlehem and as sistant professor albert rights mr woodward will defend mr hayek's point of view and mr rights will take over the case for the social and economic planners discussion will then be opened for the audience this debate will initiate the summer season for the delta omi cron theta debating society which has been the forceful stimulus in getting the lehigh valley debat ing and discussion league under way it has been the explicit pur pose of the club to encourage town people to enter into these forums and discussions malcolm schvey who will sub stitute for allan goodman the reg ular varsity debater is a newcom er to the lehigh circle though he was initiated last semester in a de bate with ursinus college through the efforts of miss elizabeth hartman a complete bib liography has been arranged in the library on collateral subjects sur rounding professor hayek's view on political economy the contro versial problems developing from mr hayek's book have recently been emphasized by a whole se ries of articles and editorials one of which was recently written by dale gramley acting-editor of the bethlehem globe-times h.o hill talks to c.e.'s on types of welding brown & white lehigh university mr hill spoke about welding he related the different types and methods of welding after which he made a comparison of manual and machine techniques harold o hill a representative of bethlehem steel company was the principal speaker at the amer ican society of civil engineers meeting held monday july 16 1945 at packard auditorium veterans urged to join legion attention frosh to clear up confused freshmen cyanide wishes to state again that freshmen are required to wear their dinks and socks while in the city limits of bethlehem at all times except sunday they are not required to wear the paraphernalia outside the city limits of beth lehem but at the specified times no freshman should be without hats and socks within city limits
