first class band to provide music for the eve ning at present there is little available information on the dance but it has been announced that the fraternity houses and the dor mitories will be open to the week end guests tickets can probably be obtained from the respective living group heads bud rader was the feature at traction of the last arcadia dance which was very successful the prospects of the coming dance are excellent and it will surely be one of the best dances that has been held during the past few semes ters the date is august 4 the place is grace hall the time is 10 o'clock the music will be terrific and that is why there ought to be all-out support for the most tremendous conclave of the summer semester at 7:30 tonight 14 freshmen who violated frosh regulations will go on trial before cyanide in drown hall most of the group rounded up prior to july 4 failed to wear hats or brown ties the regulations are of no value in promoting freshman unity un less they are rigidly obeyed for this reason other similar round ups will follow the vigilantes men picked from the school at large assisted cyan ide in enforcing the rules cyan ide the junior honorary society has been in charge of freshman regulations for three semesters the vigilantes were organized to help them last semester 140 enlisted men naisawald new adjutant beginning his third semester as commandant of the lehigh re serve officers training corps colonel george w easterday an nounced that the number of men enlisted in the military science and tactics course almost doubles the number in last year's battalion one hundred and forty men are enrolled at present temporarily replacing captain j w foster jr as adjutant for the coming month is captain louis v l naisawald captain foster is taking an infantry refresher course at fort benning ga colonel easterday stated that he is very much impressed with the new group under his command he pointed out that freshmen should remember that acting non coms for next semester will be chosen from those men now in the ranks who are outstanding in mil itary efficiency leadership and seriousness emphasis is being placed on ba sic military work which is applic able to all branches of the army close order drill with second and third semester students acting as non - commissioned officers will constitute a major part of the course the rotc program will be a great help in orienting men to the ways of the army 3 committees appointed by if council jack shipherd elected treasurer in the first interfraternity coun cil meeting of this semester held on monday july 8 president mcl ramberg appointed three commit tees a rushing committee a houseparty committee and a fra ternity committee the rushing committee neces sitated because of misunderstand ings of the present rushing rules consists of bob kramer bill schwemlein and dick craig due to the fact that there were several innocent violations of the rushing rules it was suggested that these rules be made more complete and concrete leaving less to the imag ination of individuals it was also suggested that a complete new plan of rushing may be evolved whereby there will be more even distribution of freshmen at each house and more freshmen will be able to visit more houses discuss 3 day houseparties the houseparty committee aris ing from a practically school-wide desire for a pre-war three day houseparty is composed of chair man jack shipherd bill boothby fax landstreet and harry do naghy the duties of this commit tee will be to investigate lehigh's former houseparties the plans and ideas on which other schools houseparties are based and to sug gest some theme that might be used to individualize lehigh houseparties and at the same time make a houseparty more of a school function than a function of the individual living groups also possibilities of a three-day house party in the near future will be gone into anti fraternity article reputed the fraternity committee con sisting of chairman dick craig bob ochs jack egan and mcl ramberg arose from a discussion of the recent article in reader's digest censuring the fraternities of the country the opinions were voiced that there have been a startling number of similar essays printed recently and there is a definite danger of their jeopardiz ing fraternities all over the coun try the purpose of this committee is to look into this and other ar ticles and to investigate lehigh fraternities in the light of the complaints brought forward in these articles due to the fact that john zim merman treasurer of the interfra ternity council did not return to school for the summer semester elections were held and jack ship herd became the new treasurer on friday july 13 two teams consisting of john tuberty and john hanley representing the af firmative and richard macadams and allen goodman representing the negative will debate on the question resolved that the sys tem of united states governmen tal planning as fostered by the present economic planners is ini mical to the system of individual enterprise upon which the foun dation of our country as a capital istic nation was built the topic for this debate was suggested by a controversial book entitled the road to serfdom by friedrich hayek dr hayek's book dealing with the dangers of socialism in the united states has created quite a stir since its pub lication socialist and communist leaders have vigorously condemn ed the book as being unduly alarmist and creating a false pic ture businessmen and other ad herents to the system of free en terprise have praised the book as a timely warning of what will hap pen in the future if socialist and communist practices are permitted to continue unchecked dr hayek states in his book that socialist economic planning is not necessary even with the growing complexity of civilization and by accepting socialism we would be accepting the very form of life that we are fighting to destroy the debate on friday will be a departure from the usual style of debate with rebuttal speeches and a decision rendered by judges in stead the affirmative speakers will be criticized by a critic appointed for that purpose and the negative speakers by a critic the chairman for the debate will be prof her bert diamond of the economics de partment and the critics will be prof a a rights and another invited member of the faculty new prof dr william c young to teach biology this summer a decided asset dr william c young has been temporarily added to the lehigh faculty dr young who is replacing dr trembly in the biology depart ment for the first eight weeks of the current semester has had quite a busy and important past he was born in chicago and at tended amherst college there he received his a b degree and con tinued on to amherston in chicago where he obtained his m a and his ph d in zoology he then began teaching and was on the faculties of quite a few colleges among them brown and yale some time later dr young be gan to reap the rewards for his fine work in the form of an hon orary fellowship at yale medical college a research fellowship at freidsberg college and an invita tion to lecture at harvard univer sity the new research laboratory in the chemistry building is almost ready for use by dr amstutz professor of chemistry who will have the laboratory for his own use the announcement came front mr litzenberger superintendent of grounds the room which had formerly been used by the chem istry department as a museum has been cleared of its cases which are now distributed throughout the chem building it has also been painted and has been only par tially furnished as yet due to pri ority regulations however mr litzenberger stated it will be en tirely furnished by the end of july there is also talk of another lab for dr theis in a room in the basement of the chem building a petition has been sent to the board of trustees for the finances and the room has already been painted dance brown & white lehigh university on august fourth the first dance of the summer semester will be held under the sponsorship of arcadia the dance promises to be the held toward the end of the semester by the interfraternity council body arcadia chose august fourth as this date will give everybody ample opportunity to notify his girl the next all-university dance will be held toward the end of the semester by the interfraternity council the site of the dance will be the traditional grace hall and the all is not play on south mountain this summer as bob pierce bill royer don tarbell andy rote and don ziesel left to right concentrate on the books since what they really wanted wasn't on the menu slip a nickel in the juke boys cause that slip stick will move easier to some jive l u
