the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper tounaea in ioy vol 101 no 31 tuesday march 1 1994 all the lehigh news first malcolm x vigil commemorates black leader's life by lisa turek news writer i think we should all remember the great things malcolm x did for the rights of people jennella young 96 bsu vice president dressed in all black students sung and conversed about the teachings of malcolm x in a vigil sponsored by the black student union last friday participants began the vigil by singing lift every voice and sing in the university center dining hall and later mov the cer i emony to the i student i in the i stud e n ( i stu 1 joined i hands and i with i other i theirviewsand | comments ■** i_»_s_i_i_i_ft_ii_*i about malcolm x jennella young 96 vice-presi dent of the bsu explained that the purpose of the gathering was to cel ebrate and remember the accomplish ments of malcolm x and think about where we in the black community are today mike blunt 95 a participant in the ceremony felt people should re member malcolm x and use his ac complishments to educate them selves we are celebrating a man who exemplified leadership he is not forgotten we can all learn some thing from this it's not just about black americans but all americans blunt said malcolm x began as a militant black leader of the black muslims who was suspended in 1 964 for mak ing an inflammatory statement after a visit to mecca malcolm pronounced white and blacks can work together and formed his own organization for afro-american unity he was as sassinated in 1965 young began the conversation with some comments and opened the floor for discussion malcolm x was a disciplined man who encouraged education young said we are here as well to remember the fact that education is important and we should appreciate theopportuni ■ties that we have the par ticipants re flected on the controversies malcolm x stirred up dur ing his teach ings tweendeni ■™~ - " l _-^" fc shikomba 95 president of the national soci ety of black engineers at lehigh said i definitely think malcolm x is a controversial figure especially be cause of his earlier years of national speaking shi komba was speaking about the 1950s and 1960s when there was a major thrust for racial integration in the united states yet malcolm x and the black muslims were calling for racial separation their organization thought the white man was evil and the black man should separate himself cultur ally politically and psychologically from the western white civilization later malcolm x traveled to af rica and europe and once to mecca based on these trips he no longer believed that all white people were evil and he thought that he had found the true meaning of the islamic religion jason project underway by jennifer m newman news wriler the first of thousands began their voyage to the central american rain forests yesterday without even leav ing grace hall through the annual jason project thousands of students ex plore the depths of the sea and exotic locales through the high-tech world of satellite broadcast the jason project which is hosted by the lehigh's science model area resource team center is an expedition of live exploration and scientific discovery designed to motivate and excite students and teachers to learn more about tech nology and science the expedition is hosted by 26 museums educational institutions and research organ'raiuons wwvc\rv are known as command centers there are locations in england canada bermuda and he united h&wpholo by makk ruitins jennella young 96 bsu vice-president reflects on the life and accomplishments malcolm x struggled for to help all races sunny beaches or prayer scheduling of spring break has students choosing between fun in the sun and religious commitments by andrea mccloud news writer spring break is usually a time of beaches bathing suits and pina coladas but this year it could be a time filled with temples churches and prayer as students decide whether to spend their religious holidays with friends or family this year spring break takes place during passover and ends on easter sunday last year students were given two different vacations for easter and spring break the forum calender committee which consists of students faculty and administration is in charge of determining the schedule and chose to combine the two breaks into one since easter falls so early in the se mester it has always been the calender committee's practice to combine the breaks whenever they can bruce correll the registrar said however many students are not pleased with the results of the new schedule they feel combining the two breaks forces them to choose be tween fun with friends or prayer with family carrie urbas 96 said it seems to me that the university thought they were doing students a favor by putting the break during religious holidays what they forgot was that most students like to go away for spring break with friends skiing or to the beach and will not be able to spend time with their families she said there are not usually three breaks in the spring said james a dearden associate professor of economics and former co-chairman of the calender committee because easter fell so late in the semester last year students were given an early pacing break a week long spring break and two addi tional days for easter this year there are actually only two fewer days off dearden said yet students are more upset about when the breaks are scheduled and many say it is not simply because of less days off many students are angry that they will have to return to school on eas ter sunday for classes monday sarah middlclon 96 said that if springßreak does coincide with eas ter students should at least have the following monday off in order to spend the day at home 1 think it is ridiculous that we have to be back at school for monday classes she said they should have at least extended it until tuesday now i have to spend easter in the car on the way back to school dearden said students do not re alize how difficult it is to schedule breaks so that there will be enough school days and so as not to disrupt the lab schedules the issue here was whether to have the monday after easter off but it was too hard to arrange the sched ule without that monday dearden said to have the calender come out right we would have had to give the monday and tuesday off and that would be just too long of a break he said some students said they did not mind returning on easter but would have preferred two separate breaks please see jason page 8 please see students page 7 please see break page 8 hnews 1-8 world news briefs 2 cia fbi assassinations 3 sports editor helps students 4 sciencepages 9-11 city water improvement 9 salting roads not green 11 sports 16-20 women's basketball 19 lehigh ends regular season with loss team enters patriot league tournament as sidth seed page 20
