it hasn't happened since the late 60s but lehigh is again holding classes on saturday and sunday undergraduate makeup classes for two of the day s missed because of snow and ice storms over the past two weeks will be held on one satur day and sunday later this semester according to provost al pense undergraduate classes scheduled for thursday jan 20 will be re scheduled for saturday feb 12 and friday jan 28 classes will be held on sunday march 6 graduate evening classes will be rescheduled over pacing break thursday graduate evening classes will be scheduled for tuesday feb please see classes page 17 22 and wednesday evening classes will be held on monday feb 21 the classes will be held at their regu larly scheduled meeting times this decision came after days of deliberation of how to rectify the disastrous start to the spring semes ter in which snow storms record cold and low heating oil reserves on campus convinced university offi cials to close the university on six separate occasions pense said he knows this solution will not please everyone but said it is the best solution considering the con straints we have a lot of people who have already made plans for the pacing deep rooted in the system they have no real threat of abolishment julie gayle 95 gamma phi beta membership selection vice-president said nationally numbers are down but lehigh is not reaping the worst effects last year 284 women rushed and this year the number is only down to 262 volchko said,'to lose only about 20 girls is really insignifi cant the change in the sorority pledge nationally the popularity of the greek system among college stu dents appears to have fallen but not at lehigh across the nation the num ber of college students rushing fra ternities and sororities is down from past years but at lehigh the numbers continue to remain steady according to jennifer volchko associate dean of students for resi dential life and greek affairs lehigh does not have a hard time maintain ing it s greek organizations because of their long history at the university terrcnce m . curran associate the office of the registrar has released the gpa rankings of living groups for the fall semester frank benginia the associate registrar said that the rankings are used to determine the winners of the trust ees scholarship cup every october the living group having the highest scholastic average for the preceding year is given the award the list itself is very extensive individual halls in residential complexes are listed as separate living groups while buildings in warren square fraternities trembley park and sororities are each listed as single living groups taylor a-2 earned the highest gpa of 3.33 last by holly jackson news writer please see tuition page 5 these include a6 percent increase or 170,000 to be used for more library books and periodicals utili ties and maintenance supplies to care for the buildings snow and ice re moval and insurance for buildings and vehicles woltjen said,"we can't do much to dictate what the rates are but the increase is modest compared to what we have done in the past with tuition increases likely each in 1 865 the cost of a lehigh edu cation was 50 including room and board now forthe 1994-1995 school year tuition will increase from 23,250 to 24,280 a 4.4 percent increase from last year according to a letter sent out to parents by lehigh president peter likins this is the lowest percentage increase in 24 years and the smallest dollar increase in seven years al though the 19-meal plan will also increase 80 the university budget will allow resident hall charges to remain john woltjen vice-president said that this year's 190 million budget for the current year will be broken down into funds for person nel benefits labor costs a 3.2 per cent increase in salary for some staff members food services custodial services and direct university em ployee benefits we're very labor intensive woltjen said,"but beyond labor costs we
