when the holiday season passes and student s prepare to return back to the hustle and bustle of the lehigh routine for most women it will be time to make some serious decisions sorority rush begins jan 19 and lasts for the following 10 days dur ing this time freshmen women each face a different kind of experience rush gives freshmen an introduction to sorority life at lehigh and an experience most women look for ward to i think that it will be great because i will be able to meet a ton of people keri louis 97 said some freshmen find themselves caught up in the frenzy of sorority life while others realize all that glit ters is not gold traci kasman,'9s a former sis ter of alpha gamma delta sorority who deactivated at the end of the 1993 spring semester feels that rush can be a grueling and superficial procedure not only for freshmen but the sisters involved by mary beth shultz news writer please see credit page 6 man of electric engineering and com puter science . ' over the past number of years the enrollment in the accel erated courses has increased and the quality of students taking the college sponsored programs has declined talhelm supports the amendment but also feels that some exceptions should be made when there is evidence that an incoming student has taken a sufficient course load in high school lehigh has to make sure the qual ity of the college-sponsored programs are compatible to lehigh ' s academic course offerings talhelm said placement tests the new amendment requires that students who take college-sponsored courses score high on the advanced placement examination to be consid ered for credit previously the pro grams credits were accepted without the need of tests the requirements were welcomed by some faculty who see the recent leniency in the granting of advanced placement as damaging to the university's academic reputation four or five years ago only the highest qualified students were al lowed to take accelerated courses said don talhelm associate chair b&w photo by david baker james gunton dean of the college of arts and science the lehigh faculty passed stron ger restrictions on the granting of college credit to incoming freshmen monday citing an increasing num ber of underqualified students re ceiving accelerated university credit lehigh will no longer give col lege credit for courses taken at the high school level sponsored by col leges said bruce correll a mem ber of the educational policy com mittee and registrar it will still accept students who achieve high scores on the standardized advanced sorority rush not all laughs the brown and white all the lehigh news first friday december 10 1993 graffiti fuels gay debate on campus vol 101 no 23 by lori montemurro associate editor clothes are for closets we re here we're queer get used to it come out come out whoever you are sorry mom no grandkids 2qt2bstrb if students were out and about before 1:30 pjn on tuesday they were able to see these phrases pink triangles and more written in pastel chalk on the sidewalks in front of rauch business center e.w fairchild-martindalelibrary packard laboratory the university center and the alumni memorial building after 1:30 p.m the graffiti was washed off some of the areas includ ing rauch and packard lab on wednesday morning anti-gay messages were written in response in some areas around campus the chalk messages between maginnes hall and fairchild-martindale library read faggots have no rights on the sidewalk above the uc keep please see chalk page 8 lehigh fag free was written other anti-gay statements were chalked on campus but most were washed off even faster than tuesday's writing however behind the uc the sayings from tuesday still existed and unknown individuals added some anti-gay messages to this original writing the chalk writing said love does not discriminate but i do the last three words added sometime tuesday night or wednesday morn ing hate is not a family value was written by gay members of the campus added to this phrase on wednes day was neither is being gay josh cohen 94 is a homosexual and was part of monday night/tues day mornings activities which lead to the gay messages which appeared on tuesday he said he was disap pointed but not surprised the build .„._ . • •„.. . b&w photo in marc j goldstein hate is not a family value was written by gay students on tuesday neither is being gay was added wednesday on a wall behind the university center faculty tightens standards for freshmen credit policy by lk arie carasco and tucker quayle news writers please see rush page 6 it'sfake and stupid kasman said the rush process is really bad it can be awkward fake and boring although this feeling is held by some there is still a large majority of women who remember the experi ence fondly i remember rush as a really positive thing said denise menikheim 95 a sister of alpha phi sorority if you come away with a really negative attitude then you probably didn't go into it with an open mind
