on monday night may 14 the civil engineering society of the lehigh valley held its third meet ing of the year in room 466 of packard lab mr e l durkee bethlehem consulting engineer gave an informative talk on his experiences in building the new pecos river railroad bridge mr durkee stated that the pe cos bridge is a single traffic span 322 feet high and approximately 1400 feet long bridging the pecos river a river that flows through the western portion of texas many difficulties there were many difficulties to be surmounted before the bridge was finally completed mr dur kee went on to relate difficulties such as shortage of labor ship ments of steel held up because of army priorities behavior of some of the workmen particularly the canadian indians whose alcoholic propensities got them into numer continued on page 4 busy entertaining weekend coming up there will be many things hap pening this weekend which may appeal to your tastes and it will be quite a busy and quite an en tertaining one from all appear ances first of all if you are a classic lover — or should we say lover of the classics the bach festival will be held friday and saturday afternoons and evenings with ses sions on both days at 4 in the af ternoon and in the evening but if you prefer sports the baseball team will be playing host to villanova at steel field at 3 on saturday afternoon and then in the evening the war bond show put on by vet erans from fort oglethorpe georgia will be presented in taylor stadium the affair will begin rain or shine at 8 p m and will be proceeded by a parade and concert by the liberty high school band l v engineers club to hold annual meeting the annual meeting of the en gineers club of the lehigh valley will be held on thursday may 17 in the rainbow room at central park between allentown and bethlehem reg kehoe and his marimba queens will provide entertainment for the evening kehoe's act is made up of the queens two men and a natural clown who plays the bass fiddle all are accomplished musicians and can play both clas sical and popular music ee's hear rca speaker friday mr cyril n hoyler of rca was the principle speaker at the meeting of the electrical engi neering society last friday eve ning in room 416 packard labora tory the meeting was called to order by president harry s sechrist ee j-'45 and the first matter un der discussion was the advisabil ity of having a picnic for the so ciety in the latter part of this month it was decided to have a picnic on the 26th of may at a park on the other side of allen town provisions were also made for the election of new officers for next semester among those present were sev eral members of moravian col lege for men and several employ ees of the lehigh valley railroad following the meeting a tour of packard laboratory was conduct ed after which refreshments con sisting of birchbeer and pretzels were served bethlehem pa wednesday may 16 1945 price 5 cents 38th bach festival to be held may 18 19 in packer chapel and moravian church vol lii — no 40 field secretary of the society is as follows friday may 18 4 p.m cantata no 78 — jesus thou my weary spirit instrumental sinfonias passion according to st john part i friday 8:30 p.m passion according to st john part n saturday 10:30 a.m instrumental and vocal selec tions — players from phil harmonic symphony orches tra saturday 2 p.m mass in b minor — beginning to cradle saturday 4:30 p.m mass in b minor — cradle to end the charter of packer memorial chapel provides that the bach choir should at any time it de sires use the chapel for its fes tival and under this ruling the choir has been using the chapel for many years the bach choir was founded in 1898 by dr fred wolle but it had several precur sors notably the collegium mu sicum founded in 1774 the phil this friday and saturday marks the thirty-eighth bach fes tival held annually in packer chapel and moravian church the event will be held in packer chapel on friday evening and saturday afternoon and evening on saturday morning there will be an organ recital in the mora vian church harmonic society and the beth lehem choral society dating back to 1884 which was also founded by dr wolle dr wolle was inspired in his undertaking by the bach festi vals he had heard while in mu nich and when he suggested to bethlehem music -
