              your faculty dr erdoss makes his contribution dr bela e erdoss was born in jugoslavia in 1903 in 1927 he graduated from the royal joseph university of engineering at buda pest hungary and in 1933 re ceived a degree there in mechanical engineering at the same time he gained qualification as an archi tectural builder preceding his de gree he had done graduate work for two years during the years of 1933 to 1939 he worked in indus try in jugoslavia hungary and london he came to america in february of that year to design build and run three factories the latest and largest of which is sit uated in phillipsburg n j from there he came to easton in 1941 and in the fall of the follow ing year came to lehigh in con junction with the billesbi fellow ship in m.e during those early years at lehigh he spent half his time in graduate study and the other half in research before coming to lehigh dr erdoss worked predominantly with foreign industry and found a great handicap in the workings of the english language a factor which he has overcome amazingly well in his comparatively short stay here in the winter of 1942 the navy came to lehigh and dr erdoss then worked with the department on a restricted research project the new air-flow laboratory was built at that time in order to ful fill the navy commitments the job came to a successful conclu sion in 1943 in the fall of 43 he received his master's degree as well as mem bership into pi tau sigma the phi beta kappa of mechanical en gineers since that time to top off these achievements dr erdoss received membership into the sigma xi society and the institute of aeronautical science the latter being one of his most prized achievements in october 1944 continued on page 4 introduced as a result of travel ling and other difficulties senator burton who has held his present seat since 1941 start ed his political career as a mem ber of the east cleveland board of education a post held for a year before becoming a member of the ohio house of representatives in 1929 for the next three years he held the post of director of law in cleveland ohio and in 1931 was made acting mayor of that city for a short term later in 1935 he was elected mayor and served cleveland in that capacity for five years originally attorney an attorney in private life the speaker began his practice in 1912 with gage wilbur and wachner of cleveland and since has been associated with a number of law firms including andrews hadden and burton cull burton and laughlin day day and wilkin later day and day he has also been assistant attorney for the utah power and light company and the utah traction company of salt lake city and attorney for the idaho power company and the boise valley traction company of boise idaho a member of the national board of incorporators of the american red cross senator bur ton also served as a first lieuten ant and later as captain in the united states army during world war i holds many degrees graduated from bowdoin col lege he holds many degrees in cluding an ll.b harvard 1912 ll.d bowdoin 1937 ll.d ob erlin college 1941 ll.d ohio wesleyan 1941 and lh.d mt union 1943 in addition to membership in the american bar association and the ohio and cleveland bar asso ciation senator burton is affil iated with phi beta kappa delta kappa epsilon and phi alpha delta fraternities he also belongs to many service clubs and frater nal organizations including the masons the eagles the grange the rotary club kiwanis and ex change club when not carrying out his duties in washington senator burton re sides in cleveland debators plan urban high school meet delta omicron theta will bring a surprising innovation to the le high campus on may 5 when it will sponsor a high school speak ing contest for the high schools in the urban and interurban area the tentative list of high schools invited are liberty high school bethlehem catholic high school allentown high school allentown catholic high school nazareth high school and catasauqua high school richard macadams chairman for the contest has announced that the contest will take place in packard auditorium at 2:15 fol lowing the journalistic conference sponsored by pi delta epsilon in the morning to comply with odt regulations the invitations will be limited to urban and interurban areas prizes will be given for first and second places but ac cording to mr macadams the prizes will not be the important item since the object of the con test is to stimulate interest in ex temporaneous speaking in high schools in the lehigh valley this invitation contest marks the second exciting venture of delta omicron theta this school year since it will be remembered as president jack tuberty pointed out that the debating society be gan the lehigh valley debating conference for the six colleges in this area to stimulate a wider in terest in discussion and debate on current problems facing our youth today likewise the choice of the extemporaneous method as the basis for a speech contest is to de velop young speakers who can stand and think on their feet and who will not have to use their memorization patterns or complete the schedule of commencement day events the combined exercises first held at lehigh last february were united states senator harold hitz burton of ohio has been named speaker for the combined baccalaureate and graduation exercises to be held sunday june 17 at lehigh university dean philip m palmer chairman of the university's administrative committee announced lehigh entertains drexel nine saturday the scheduled away game with drexel next week has been shift ed to bethlehem to coincide with the weekend activities the base ball game will be held at steel field at 3 p m this will be the fourth game our varsity has play ed since the game scheduled with lafayette last saturday was called off in respect to our late president franklin delano roosevelt the brown and white nine have yet to will meet muhlenberg at the visitor's home field this wed nesday in the third game of the season frosh beware —- cyanide on prowl a meeting of cyanide the junior honorary activities society was held in drown hall on april 11 the group is also continuing their survey of joint committees and they will continue to offer suggestions as they have done in the past dick huyett m e june 46 who is the president of cyanide announced that the society intends to enforce the freshman regula tions with increasing severity the society is of the opinion that the freshmen have been extremely lax in their observance of the reg ulations since the regulations will end on flagpole day cyanide feels that until that time they should be rigidly enforced sinde the hall must be cleared by midnight the dance is
