dr tomlinson fort professor and head of the department of mathematics at lehigh university as well as dean of the graduate school will resign to accept the post of head of the department of mathematics at his alma mater the university of georgia july 1 according to an announcement from the lehigh administrative committee dr fort who has been head of the mathematics department since coming to lehigh in 1927 was named as dean of the graduate school in 1938 the lehigh dean also collabor ated with j w young and f m morgan in writing the text ana lytic geometry published in 1936 in addition to his teaching and administrative duties at lehigh dr fort served as visiting profes sor at the university of pennsyl vania during the summer of 1933 he has written numerous techni cal papers for the american math ematical journals while his largest single work is a book on infinite series published by the oxford university press math head at hunter college before coming to lehigh dr fort was head of the department of mathematics at hunter college in new york city a post he held for three years from 1924 to 1927 previously from 1917-1924 he was head of the department of mathe matics at the university of ala bama and from 1913 to 1917 was associated with the university of michigan first as an instructor and later as assistant professor of mathematics dean fort has also taught at harvard university and at the university of georgia ph.d from harvard he received his bachelor of arts degree from the university of georgia in 1906 and his master of arts degree from harvard uni versity in 1910 he received the doctor of philosophy degree from harvard university in 1912 fol lowing this the lehigh dean en gaged in foreign study at the uni versities of gottingen and paris from 1912 to 1913 dr fort is affiliated with var ious learned societies and profes sional fraternities including the mathematics association of amer ica the american association for the advancement of science phi beta kappa and sigma xi he served two terms both as manag ing editor of the bulletin of the american mathematical society and as associate editor of the american mathematical month ly as well as a reviewer for mathematical reviews continud on page 4 frosh handbook published in may the frosh handbook is defin itely under way and informed sources have it that the books will be out somewhere around the middle of may in time to get them to the incoming freshmen before they register for the summer sem ester sigma rho sigma is handling the job of putting out the book doing all the writing and ad-col lecting although a good deal of the written matter can be gleaned from previous handbooks much of it still must be written anew and with all the advertising needed to make the project a financial suc cess it is quite an undertaking for the five members of the so ciety but an undertaking well worth the effort if the tradition of handbooks is reestablished a great step will have been taken toward putting lehigh back on her feet again included in the handbook to give just a few samples will be a section on arcadia a history of lehigh a section taken by i-f council in conjunction with the i-f council every willing frater ity will take a few pages as it wishes thus more or less icor porating the old i-f rushing handbook into this book also included will be the rules and regulations a resume of all the activities and sports however all names of student leaders will be left out for they usually change semesterly and it is hoped that this handbook will serve for a few semesters it is the great hope of the society that a good deal of the book will be taken up by advertising for the cost has been estimated to run to about 30 all of which must be cov ered by advertising the method of distribution of the handbook has not yet been decided but in the past the dean has distributed the handbooks with the letters of acceptance and perhaps this custom will be carried on bethlehem pa wednesday april 4 1945 price 5 cents town-dorm dance to be held april 21 jimmy raye orchestra will provide music dancing in grace hall from nine to twelve plans have recently been completed for blue nocturne the big town-dorm dance to be held april 21 jimmy raye and his thirteen piece band will be on hand to provide smooth danceable music the vocals will be ably handled by charming june rodgers raye has played with bunny berrigan and tommy dorsey and is said to blow a sweet trumpet comparable to that of harry james his band has played numerous engagements in and around philadelphia and has dean tomlinson fort . . . vol lii — no 34 been well received the dance will be semi-formal and corsages will be optional dr and mrs c g beardslee and mr and mrs f c bartlett will chap erone at least 150 couples are ex pected to be present at lehigh's first dance of the semester drinker house and a large number of fraternity houses will be opened for guests of lehigh students saturday night the dance will start at nine o'clock and end at twelve because of the new curfew ruling tickets are now on advanced sale at the price of 3.30 per cou ple this understand ing practical principles of refrige ration from now on according to prof fred v larkin director of the mechanical engineering de partment the york corporation of philadelphia has presented the university with a model compres sor which will miake otherwise ob scure points of engineering clear professor larkin predicts when a student doesn't under stand the professor's lecture the latter brings the compressor into the classroom and by merely turn ing the crank shows the student exactly how the machine operates the model was formerly used by the corporation for trade show demonstrations and is perfectly adapted to classroom demonstra tions it was mlade by cutting a compressor in two in order to fur nish the engineers with an actual cross-section of theoretical oper ation when not in use it will be kept with a large collection of other models housed in the me chanical engineering department at packard lab representing the york corpora tion at the recent appears to be coming in june according to mr paul franz of the admissions office lehigh can expect an enter ing group of over 200 frosh the largest number since september 1942 the majority of the men will be 17 year-olds who can look for ward to tv/o or more semesters at lehigh and the remainder will be returning servicemen and those physically disqualified from the service the standards for admis sion have not changed in the least and a great many men who are not in the upper group scholasti cally will be required to take col lege board exams the admissions office has carried on much correspondence with vet erans overseas to encourage them to establish eligibility for the col lege of their choice now while they are still in the service tee increase in the number of applicants for matriculation seems to be a general trend throughout all of the colleges in the country and can probably be attributed to the slackening in the war situa tion that is the seventeen year old just out of high school feels that he can use the time before his induction to best advantage by going to college and acquiring technical training that will en hance his chances for advance ment in the armed forces all lehigh men are again re minded to do as miuch as they can to get new students for lehigh any lehigh man who knows someone who is interested in go ing to college this summer is urged to try to convince him that lehigh is the college of his choice and to bring him around to the ad missions office where he can ob tain all the information he de sires regarding the college new tau betes dick heard a general student gripe about the student concerts-lectures committee and the programs it didn't present for the students and faculty this semester the scl decided to do something about this student perturbence and sent questionnaires out to every enrolled student asking for his opinion on the type of program that should be presented for his benefit from the entire student enrollment the scl committee now reports that they have received approximately thirty 30 questionnaires now either there are absolutely no grounds for the so-called student dis turbance said to be caused by the scl committee or else every one is too busy to be bothered let's cooperate with scl
