approximately 18 men met in drown hall monday evening un der the auspices of dr beardslee to discuss plans for another war time graduation at lehigh the meeting was rather tentative and therefore some of the plans are a bit nebulous nevertheless the men decided to hold a combination baccalaureate and commencement at 10:30 sun day morning june 17 with a re ception at 3 o'clock in the after noon wm wehner newly ap pointed head of the five man committee named two groups to take care of commencement pro grams and the class memorial gift program on the committee in charge of the class memorial gift are robert frey wm pettit jos eph rengert and john grim mem bers of the commencement pro gram are wm reiterman essio baldelli and renee laurencot seniors were once more requested to pay assessment for epitome at the placement bureau because the graduation date is so far in the future a speaker for the commencement has not been chosen but it is highly probable that another meeting will be held in the future to make more defin ite plans tb results from last semester made known the results of last semester's tu berculosis survey have been re leased the tests which were made at the health service office consisted of two injections of old tuberculin in varied strengths and a final x-ray of the chest if the injections showed positive re sults a total of 390 persons were tested including 367 students 3 faculty members and 20 em ployees and of these 136 had x-rays taken the results showed a total of 350 or 90 negative 32 of the healed childhood type and 8 described as latent or suspi cious dr carl o keck of the health service stated his intention of in stituting a t b test as part of the regular physical taken by enter ing freshmen baer with me by hans baer college freshman a sui cide . . . that was a recent news paper headline the story went on to say that a lafayette freshman had committed suicide in the col lege chemistry laboratory because he maintained that he was unable to make friends this incident is not unique in it self during the past several years many a college student has reach ed a state of frustration which compelled him to end his life opin ions have been expressed to the effect that these happenings reflect on american college campus life in general this actually leads us back to where this column left off last week college life should not con sist exclusively of going to classes the courses which make up the curriculum of the student should not be entirely of a technical na ture again we must emphasize that courses developing a man's philosophical thinking power and creative ability must be an integ ral part of everybody's — yes even the engineer's — curriculum suicide unnecessary obviously such a suicide could not have been prevented by a course in philosophy logic or english yet it could have been prevented by somebody who actually took a personal in terest in the student's life and character — a friend a course which entails discussion with the teacher naturally helps to bring about a closer contact between professors and students than a course in calculus or physics in which a student merely takes notes or perhaps even sleeps yet to state the problem in dif ferent words the average college underclassman is in desperate need of an experienced adviser here at lehigh the curriculum di rectors are supposed to be the ad visers of the individual students in their departments it is how ever impossible to have them car ry the entire responsibility of ad vising the hundred-odd students under their jurisdiction cooperation necessary oftentimes a boy may have a serious personal problem which he would like to talk over with some one closer to him than his curri culum director if there existed more personal relations between faculty and students a student could easily find somebody in whom he might confide his prob lems if closer contact with the faculty is established a student in need of personal advice from an exper ienced adult might find a helpful balance to guide him through his crisis and again we m»ust reiter ate jacques barzun's opinion that teaching does not merely consist of propagating scientists and tech nical wizards but also of develop ing a student into a well-educated individual with a fully-rounded educational background who may truly be a credit to his society present semester the fol lowing men were elected presi dent allen goodman arts june 46 secretary-treasurer seymour glatzer arts june 46 and busi ness manager dave gerb arts feb 46 the time of your life by william saroyan is the next play to be presented by the club tick ets are on sale for april 28th and are reserved by rows if you want the best seats you'll have to get there early seymour glatzer has been put in charge of all properties for the coming production and bob mayer has been chosen responsible for the costumes in order to be eligible for mem bership in mustard and cheese a competitor must participate in two shows this policy will be contin ued however in unusual cases recommendation by the president of the club and the faculty ad viser will now be enough for mem bership an example of just such a case occurred last semester when ed heller had the lead in petti coat fever his only play and was immediately drafted into the ser vice both heller and several other prospects are being consid ered for honorary membership in the society drown hall repair planned plans are now being made for the reconditioning of the drown hall auditorium located on the sec ond floor of that building the auditorium was recently con demned by state officials because of its failure to meet requirements set for proper fire escape exits the state requires at least two means of exit from any auditor ium regardless of its position in a building both exits must be ab solutely fireproof in the case of a new building but in the case of an existing edifice only one of the two need be fireproof however drown hall met none of these stip ulations the result of the ban on the auditorium's being used as a thea ter was to prohibit any affair be ing held there for which admis sion was to be paid eventually the ban was slightly relaxed so as to permit gatherings of not more than 300 non-paying people another restriction was that only students or other lehigh per sonnel would be allowed to at tend thus excluding townspeople at the present time no correc tive action has been taken but mr litzenberger superintendent of grounds for the university has submitted a report to a trustees committee concerning steps neces sary for the reconditioning of the hall in addition to fireproof exits an asbestos curtain emergency light ing and a fireproof curtain will be installed these plans are now be ing considered and will probably be an important post-war project on lehigh's list work being done on campus at present is for the most part paint ing packard lab the chemistry lab and drown hall are the out standing recipients of new protec tive coats debaters hold meets recently on friday afternoon in packard lab dick macadams m e j.'46 and jack tuberty arts feb 46 defended the negative side of the question resolved that the unit ed states should enact legislation providing for compulsory arbitra tion of labor disputes when other means fail constitutionality granted william toms and jos eph bowers of gettysburg college took the affirmative the debate proceeded according to the oregon style lehigh's chapter of delta omi cron theta honorary debating society enjoyed a rather active week-end on march 15-16 taking part in an intercollegiate panel discussion thursday evening march 15 at muhlenberg and fol lowing this up with a debate with gettysburg on the following after noon lehigh was ably represented at the panel discussion by bob mertz arts feb 47 the discussion was on the subject of lowering the vot ing age to 18 years mertz was the fourth speaker to whom was del egated the important task of sum marizing the remarks of the pre ceding three as well as making his own comments the other speakers on the panel were jerry mitchell of cedar crest bob fisher of moravian college and elizabeth baum of moravian sem inary for women the discussion evidently stimu lated a good deal of interest among members of the audience which consisted of civilian students navy v-12 men and residents of allen town for the questioning period following the discussion was so long and so enthusiastic as to force the chairman to call a halt to the questions according to jack tuberty pres ident of delta omicron theta the next meeting of the society will take place on wednesday april 18 ball squad holds game at practice wilson lindholm twirl in intersquad tangle for the past few days in taylor stadium the baseball squad has been running through its first prac tices eb caraway's call for can didates has been answered by about thirty students although only a few of these men have had previous experience the favorable pre-season outlook still prevails the pitching staff is the strong est part of the team with three re turning lettermen lefty wilson appears to be headed for a banner season swede lindholm's form is better this year than ever before and earle compton shows im provement the pitchers exper ience will be used in other posi tions when they are not working on the mound bud lindholm has been working out at shortstop wilson has been filling in at first base and compton has been prac ticing in left field senkowski looks good last saturday afternoon eb tested his talent with a short prac tice game catching for one side was wai t senkowski who has a better arm than did either of last year's receivers filling in at catcher on the other side was walt potowsky who will probably start in center field opposing on the mound were wilson and lindholm and both turned in creditable per formances occupying first base for their respective sides were jim mearns and chuck hafner mearns has displayed his ability to swat the apple from the left side of the plate and hafner will probably shift to the outfield for the first game wallace and norris second the two opposing second base men were bill wallace and dick norris norris had some exper ience with the team last summer and wallace has played previously at mercersburg academy in the shortstop slot don kolb and bob polstein held forth and both did passably well joybone harris and frank an derson occupied the hot corner and both made smooth plays out in the pastures earle comp ton charlie tuttle and duncan wood chased flies for one side and for the other ernie gurski jim waldor and silas mcgurk went after the ball other men out for the squad who were not playing in the prac tice game are pete kitson george herman bob dyer wayne feg ley j birchmeyer r bluestone l weider and b hunington new metallurgy technique developed brown and white lehigh university credited with the development of fractography a new tech nique that may enable metallur gists to enter a virtually unexplor ed field of science the study of high magnification of the structure of fractures in metals carl a zapffe and an associate of the rustless iron and steel corpora tion were acclaimed at a recent meeting of the american society for metals fractography a word coined by the authors is defined as the mi crographic study of cleavage fac ets on fractured metal specimens and will enable metallurgists to explain why metals with certain types of fracture structures have definite physical properties to date it was pointed out all the known information about fractures is based upon observations made with the naked eye or low-power microscopes seniors consider graduation plans scl committee needs cooperation . . . in the past many students have criticized the student concert lecture series committee most of the criticism was based on the inactivity of the group this group is now making plans for programs to be presented this fall and next year the committee however needs the cooperation of the entire student body two weeks ago every student received a form which he was asked to fill out and return to the committee very few men have as yet returned their replies fill out the form and return it now via lamberton hall arcadia or the supply bureau
