lehigh university tuesday february 16 1993 alumnus gives 3.4 million for arts center vol 100 no 30 theater student reaches finals crime dips 14 percent see arts page 4 by maclean guthrie assistant news editor a lehigh alumnus recently gave the university 3.4 million to help build the long-awaited zoellner arts center dexter baker 50 head of the dexter f and dorothy h baker foundation of allentown is the third donor to give a mullinnllion dollar gift toward the construction of the center the concert hall in the arts center will be in the bakers name in a press release from the office of media relations dexter baker said a center for the arts at lehigh has been a lifelong dream of dottie's mrs baker and mine it has been almost 47 years since i came to lehigh as a freshman and even then a facility for the arts was clearly missing baker retired last year as the chairman of the executive committee and board of directors at air products and chemi cals inc he is also a member of lehigh's board of trustees and is the chairman of the fund-raising campaign for the new arts center the zoellner arts center is one of the priorities of the preserving the vision campaign introduced by the board last september to raise 300 million by 1997 the new arts center will house the music theatre and museum operations departments these departments are currently housed in lamberton hall the wilbur drama workshop and various hallways of the university's build ings respectively by deborah schwartz news editor for the first time in lehigh's history two students progressed to the advanced rounds of the irene ryan scholarship auditions at the american college the atre festival xxv competition held at ithaca college out of a field of 125 students compet ing kashi johnson 93 became one of 16 finalists and ginie rathyen 94 was one of 32 semifinalists lehigh students have competed be fore rathyen said but no one has ever made it to the semifinals or finals before the students were given a five minute time limit to perform a scene of their choice with a partner and also a mono logue the lehigh students competed against actors from other schools in re gion ii which includes pennsylvania delaware new jersey new york and the district of columbia johnson said she wasn't expecting anything from the competition i was doing it for the experience johnson said johnson said she didn't have much time to react to the competition results lt all happened within a few hours of each other johnson said it was a big blur i was really in a daze according to johason the finals round see finals page 4 the weather outside is frightful ir professor completes book see crime page 4 lehigh s campus-wide crime rate decreased by 14 percent according to the uniform crime report filed by pennsylvania however john smeaton assistant vice presi dent for student affairs said the numbers alone do not provide an appropriate base of information to understand the safety of the campus since 1990 all colleges and universities have been required by federal law to report crimes occurring on their campuses to their respective state authorities according to the uniform crime report which compiles nationally reported offenses thefl is the most frequent crime committed at lehigh vandalism alcoholic offenses and thelt con stitute 70 percent of crimes at lehigh but accord ing to smeaton all three can be prevented the relatioaship between alcohol use and crimes on campus is extremely significant smeaton said if we could reduce the alcohol abuse we could reduce the criminal activities smeaton said the most important aspect of lehigh's safety program is education smeaton feels that by educating students to take precautions and stressing the importance of never putting themselves in unnecessary jeopardy campus crime can be minimized lehigh assembles brochures ibrpresent and prospective students about campus crime sta tistics and has its police present safety pro grams each semester to educate the students smeaton encourages a cooperative effort between students staff and community to pro mote a sense of safety last semester's block party was an attempt to encourage interaction with the local police and off-campus students smeaton also encourages students to report all crimes committed the statistics show that forcible rape increased by four from 1990 to 1991 although many people will read this statistic as an increase in crime smeaton said that this may not be the case by deana didio news writer see moon page 4 the basic human needs are those things required to give you a long life -
