e.p oct 47 ronald lenney bus oct 47 and charles pomerantz ch.e oct 47 the house officers for the sem ester are seymour schwartz con sul arnold cohen vice-consul george adler quaestor seymour glatzer scribe sidney kovar editor historian and devid gerb alumni scribe lehigh plays host to prep grapplers on saturday afternoon and eve ning lehigh university once more will play host for the preparatory school wrestling championships according to eb caraway direc tor of athletics six schools have entered men in the annual tussle gilman academy third place win ners last year so far is the only school to enter a full team other entries include mercersburg de fending champions brooklyn poly prep runner-up blair academy wyoming seminary and shadyside military academy possible partici pants who have not entered as yet are valley forge military academy and the macdonough school individual stars of the meet in clude baker of oilman who will be defending his title at 175 pounds the gilman school also boasts some maryland state cham pions in their midst weighing in for the prep school grapplers will be held at 10 o'clock saturday morning turbine - powered locomotive built a fundamentally new type of coal-burning steam locomotive powered by a turbine in place of the cylinders pistons and driving rods of the conventional design has been completed for the penn sylvania railroad it is the first di rect drive steam turbine locomo tive ever built in the united states and is now undergoing tests to de termine the adaptability of this type of engine to the pennsylva nia's long-distance high speed pas senger and freight service in the new locomotive desig nated type s-2 the turbine shaft is rotated by the pressure of jets of steam against the vanes of the turbine wheel and a continuous flow of power is transmitted to the driving wheels through speed re ducing gears a product of con tinuing research and development the engine was designed and con structed by the baldwin locomo tive works and the westinghouse electric and manufacturing com pany , in collaboration with the pennsylvania railroad development of the new steam continued on page 3 dr diamond appointed to children's aid board dr herbert m diamond head of the department of economics and sociology was recently elected to the state board of directors of the children's aid society of penn sylvania he has previously been president of the northampton or ganization of the children's aid society this is a local organiza tion which is affiliated with the statewide society the board of directors to which professor diamond was recently elected supervises the placing of orphaned children in foster homes their aim in placing the children in private homes is to keep them out of state institutions this work is carried out through the county organizations such as the one which dr diamond is now head ing fine arts holds photo show in cooperation with the art de partment of lehigh university the photography club has decided to sponsor an exhibit entitled a century of photography most of the material has been obtained from the museum of modern art in new york city the exhibit will illustrate all types of photography including civil war pictures pictures of world war i and internationally famous photo from the cameras of such greats as adams evans sheller cartier - bresson and lynes historic prints of the fa mous early photographers brady hill and cameron will also be on display the modern and scientific fields will also be well represented by aerial telegraphic and micro pho tography as well as many exam ples of the new and varied uses of color a display of camera develop ment from its beginning to the present time will round out the main features of the exhibit there will probably be some hints as to the camera of the future although detailed accounts are strict mili tary secrets at the present time the exhibit will be on display in the art seminar from march sth heard on air robert e mertz arts feb 47 spoke from washington february 20 in a debate sponsored by scho lastic magazine the national uni versity extension association and the national forensic league the debate was heard on the american forum of the air over the mutual network in a completely unrehearsed dis cussion bob represented the nega tive on the topic the legal voting age in the united states should be reduced to 18 together with dr walter c eels of the association of junior colleges and jane tie pal of dallas texas the affirma tive was held by congressman augustus w bennet of new york betsy ancker of indiana and da vid funk of wooster ohio the opposition maintained that age was no reason to disbar a per son from voting and that at eigh teen youth is intelligent able to earn a living and should enjoy the right of franchise bob argued that a high school education does not give an individual the proper sense of responsibility which comes with experience and that permitting teen-agers to vote would serve to give a much less qualified electorate the discus sion was interesting and finely contested in their may editions seventeen pictorial magazines will carry re views of this debate held in the hotel shoreham while in washington the group was the guest of congresman ben net and had an excellent oppor tunity to see the inside workings of the government frosh regulations for class of oct 47 vigilante and cyanide members will enforce rules for lehigh s new frosh freshman regulations are again being placed upon lehigh's first semester freshmen as of last monday february 25 they are required to wear brown socks seal brown ties the brown and white dink with their class numerals upon it and to say hello to all people they meet on campus these regulations apply throughout the city of bethlehem every day except sundays and will be stringently enforced cyanide with the aid of the vigilantes will enforce these rules and all violations should be reported meeting at 6 p m of the ex ecutive student council of the de bating association preceded the informal debate representatives present the council includes the follow ing representatives of colleges of the valley gerry mitchell of ce dar crest who was chairman of the evening phillis jacobson of moravian women's college luth er wilson muhlenberg jack tu berty lehigh and james bruck art and william weinland of mo ravian college for men lafayette has not yet appointed a council representative faculty advisors recently ap pointed to serve are albert a rights lehigh prof albert gil mer lafayette dr rose davis moravian college for women ephraim everitt muhlenberg madeline skelley and george stewart cedar crest and prof marlyn rader moravian college for men capital vs labor a presentation of the viewpoint of capital versus labor was made by lehigh debaters sherman sass and allan goodmjan james bruckart and william weinland spoke for moravian college for men mary jane williams of ce dar crest summarized the point of view of both parties the audience entered into the discussions that followed nine grads receive feb bs degrees brown and white lehigh university address given by rev merrill moore on sunday february 18th 1945 lehigh university held its midyear baccalaureate and commencement exercises bachelor degrees were conferred upon the following can didates b.s in chemical address was delivered by the reverend mer rill miles moore rector of trinity episcopal church after another organ selection the degrees were conferred and the following mas ter degrees were awarded to stu dents of the graduate school to the freshmen . . . now is the time to get into extra-curricular activities don't wait for upperclassmen to invite you or to persuade you these activities are as much a part of your college life as your studies get ac quainted with your debating society dramatic society glee club and college paper in these activities you have a chance to earn a fel lowship to develop your personality to become an integrated human being in college life and don't forget the rich source of information in the various engineering societies here you have a chance to meet your
