the brown and white vol 99 no 33 friday february 28 1992 lehigh university more lu students assaulted by melissa campinell news editor a lehigh graduate student was struck with a metal baseball bat and robbed of his wallet jacket keys and car at 6:30 p.m monday bethlehem police said james p reynolds 24 a graduate student studying mate rial science and engineering was walking up montclair ironically i woke up the next morning to go to class and my car had been returned overnight james p reynolds assault victim avenue toward laury street when he saw a group of four or five males ahead he said reynolds said he had originally gone outside to get something from his car when he was approached by two of the youths one of them held up what looked like a gun and the other had a bat reynolds said the guy with the gun demanded my wallet then the guy with the bat hit me behind my knee and i fell to the ground he said the youths continually asked for money and finally took reynolds jacket and car keys reynolds said all but one of them ran to the car and started it the guy with the bat was guarding me while the others started the car reynolds said once they started it he ran and jumped in and they all drove off he said reynolds said he immediately called 91 1 and was taken by police to st luke's hospital where he was treated and released for multiple bruises on his back and the back of his knee ironically reynolds said i woke up the next morning to go to class and my car had been returned overnight two males were arrested tuesday in connection with the case but police withheld their names because they are juveniles because the attack occurred off campus the investigation is being handled by the bethlehem police female harassed while skating chased as she tries to get away by jennifer montemurro lifestyle editor a lehigh university sophomore said she was verbally harassed and chased by two unidentified males last friday afternoon at 3 p.m jennifer malatesta 94 said she was rollerskatimg on fifth street when two males drove up in a car behind her and started yelling out the window according to malatesta she was not overly concerned at first and tried to disregard the men i'm usually in the habit of ignoring things like that just blowing them off she said however the verbal harassment escalated malatesta said when the men repeatedly asked if she wanted to come for a ride with them then the man in the passenger seat got out of the car and approached malatesta that's what made me nervous that was weird she said they kept asking me to come for a ride with them malatesta said then all of a sudden they were telling me i was coming for a ride with them at this point malatesta said the man approached her and she began to skate in the opposite direction the man then started to run after her while the other assailant in the car drove forward and blocked malatesta's escape route malatesta said she skated onto east morton street in an attempt to get away from the assailants it was a really steep hill and i knew i couldn't stop she said my first instinct was to fall down on my backside to stop but i was afraid they would hit me with the car since tliey wouldn't be expecting me to do that however malatesta was approaching a busy cross street and due to the speed at which she was moving she said she was afraid she would be injured by the oncoming traffic so she said she decided to purposely make herself fall i was hoping it would stop me from going across the street she said i was going ridiculously fast because of the speed i was going i skidded across the street through the traffic and landed under a parked car across the street they just took off malatesta said she was able to walk back to her residence in brodhead house and then went to the health center the health center called the lehigh police to take her initial statement the lehigh police contacted the bethlehem police de partment since the area in which the incident occurred was outside of lehigh's jurisdiction the bethlehem police were totally unsympathetic she said when i got to st luke s the bethlehem police met me there and after i had my x-rays the officer talked to me and asked me what happened when i finished the story the first question he asked me was did you do any damage to the parked car then he asked me if i had a license plate number and since they were chasing me obviously i didn't she said i'm really disgusted i don't ever expect them to find them granted i didn ' t give them enou gh information but the officer was almost indifferent about things malatesta stressed that she knows the police can only do much with the information she gave them but she wants them to realize that their attitude toward her was inappropriate according to malatesta who suffered a broken wrist in the incident she wanted to publicize her ordeal in hopes that it might prevent similar incidents from happening to other b&w photo oy jun aiglefi degree journalism and industrial engineering majors are required to have internships or work experience in their fields but a very high percentage of these internships are unpaid if a student is in a job where they are being paid then they may receive credit for the internship by petition only said bruce correll registrar it's the exception that a paid internship would be approved correll said paid summer internships work the same way many students see this policy as unfair because students are then paying to work i think that if the students are willing to pay lehigh then there is no reason why lehigh shouldn't allow a student to receive payment said journalism major robin sherman 92 students may need the money it all adds up with transportation to the job and tuition the internship policy is supervised by a faculty member in addition to their work students must submit reports journals and a final project any time we generate credit and course offerings su pervised by
