bill boothby president of cy anide announces that all men in the classes of february or june 46 should get their points in to him before january 8 1945 such points include all extracurricular activities as well as the scholastic averages for the three semesters preceeding the juior year fritz lab site of great machine tests professor fuller director of fritz engineering laboratory an nounced that some interesting tests took place a couple of weeks ago that had to do with the strength at metal plates the lab oratory is well equipped with huge machines to do all sorts of testing two steel floor plates were loaded with sand one plate being 1/10 inch thick and the other being 8/100 inch thick both have 12 feet on a side and the former sup ported 10 tons while the latter maintained 7 tons before it col lapsed matmen scalp garnet for second big win every bout results in fall as grapplers swamp garnet 28-15 lindholm outstanding showing great strength in the lighter weight divisions the 1945 lehigh mat squad swept to its second consecutive victory of the season as swarthmore was defeated 28-15 the meet was both unusual and exciting as every match resulted in a fall with the final heavyweight match yielding two pins the un usual double pin in the final bout came as a surprise to the crowd the meet was sewed up with a 25-10 score as lehigh's joe koran met ed bradbury garnet captain when koran succumbed to a body lock in 17 seconds of the second period the crowd left satisfied with a 25-15 victory however koran rugged footballer turned the tables in the third period to show bradbury the rafters in 37 seconds and thus gather three extra points for the engineers the scor ing of five points against lehigh and three points for lehigh ac counts for the unusual total of 28-15 3 early pins cinch meet the real balance of power came in the first three divisions 121 128 and 136 pounds with lehigh's bruce hinlein bill welliver and earl margerison each coming through for falls and giving le high an early 15-0 lead swede lindholm and ted niewenhaus were the other lehigh winners in the 155 and 165 pound matches re spectively lindholm wrestling ten pounds over-the-weight gave the crowd a real thrill as he took down his opponent don sonen berg and applied the pinning bar arm and crotch in 29 seconds of the initial round niewenhaus fol lowed lindholm's lead and neatly pinned swarthmore's gene sager in 2.3 of the first period with a reverse cradle which virtually left sager standing on his head ed note see pictures at bottom of front page losses at time during the year when the students can turn tables and watch the professors suffer as they attempt to explain what they are going to do with the various articles they have re ceived after the met last wednesday decem ber 13 and passed action on three matters the committee consisting of professor f c bartlett willard boothby william day and chair man dean wray h congdon un animously approved a petition and constitution for the formation of a veteran's society to be named the george oliver ellstrom society a petition and constitution for the establishment of the sigma rho society student records society and a motion concerning use of student activities funds for ban quets and social affairs the third action was passed with the stipulation that any society de siring to use funds for banquets or social affairs must first receive approval for such use of funds from the student activities com mittee d o t awards debating prizes announcement was made last week of the awarding of the wil liams debating prize the award consists of two cash prizes given to the outstanding intramural de bating teams the winners of the 60 first prize were jack tuberty arts feb 46 sherman sass bus june 46 and dick staley m e feb 47 the second prize award of 40 went to robert mertz arts feb 47 robert polstein c e feb 47 and don wareck arts feb 47 the above teams were victorious over a field of eight the debates were held on successive friday evenings throughout the last sem ester in packard lab auditorium topics were chosen relative to campus activities and interests the competition between the two winners was so stiff that not only were they at one time tied for first place but when the play off decision was made it again re sulted in a tie the judgments were made on a point system and it was finally decided that a slight edge existed and a winner was chosen the judges for the debates were for the most part profes sors from the english department with an occasional guest judge in vited to participate the contest was sponsored by delta omicron theta lehigh's honorary debating society delta omicron theta is currently active in connection with a league for intercollegiate debating in the le high valley area three deans decide on new reforms bob mayer will represent students as a result of an editorial which appeared recently in the brown and white advocating a revision of the athletic policies of the school a conference was held between deans palmer carothers and cal len of the administrative commit tee and william j day bus june 45 warren v fox ch e june 45 and robert w mayer ch e june 45 student representatives the most important reforms suggested by the student represen tatives were reviving the alumni athletic scholarships appointing a student member on the athletic eligibility committee abolishing classes after four o'clock for men on varsity teams considering ath letics as a full-time part of le high education only one of these suggestions has met with complete success a student representative has been put on the athletic eligibility com mittee to serve in this capacity arcadia appointed robert w mayer ch e june 45 the committee was unable to act on the question of restoring alumni grant scholarships as this must be decided by the alumni themselves the committee will try to elim inate classes after four o'clock es pecially for varsity freshmen notices . . . aspirants t o cyanide the junior honorary society should submit their points to bill booth by before tuesday january 8 all juniors and seniors elig ible for o d k should submit point lists to arcadia before sat urday noon dec 23 those who wish to compete for the stage crew of time of your life would do well to be present at the b & w office in drown hall on wednesday dec 20 at 4 p m competition for the positions will be conducted then cyanide makes freshmen sing brown and white lehigh university those of you who attended the lehigh basketball and wrestling meet this past saturday must have noticed eight queerly clad cavort ing freshmen performing on the court to the amusement of the spectators as odd and unpredic table as freshmen may be their behavior was not self inspired but punishment imposed by cyanide for violations of freshman regula tions the court which tried the un lucky froshes consisted of the members of cyanide and the five man vigilante committee all the accused were found guilty and subsequently served their sentenc es amid the hoots and jeers of a combined lehigh lafayette and swarthmore audience the tapping of new cyanide members in the early part of next semester will be based on the quantity and quality of the points a candidate is able to offer merry christmas • • . beyond south mountain beyond the great divide beyond the pacific beyond . . . the brown and white wishes to bring its christ mas wishes peace on earth goodwill toward men is a message which should be carried beyond all barriers but you men out there know more about what carrying goodwill and peace means than we back home you know what the fight for the survival of a chris tian world means you know what the reality of that contradiction
