price 5 cents bethlehem pa wednesday december 13 1944 vol lii no 22 university banquet at hotel bethlehem all university banquet plans a good time and a good dinner for all who attend lehigh students faculty and friends don't forget the climax of the current semester the all-university banquet date december s 1944-tn oth words this coming wednesday time 6:30 p m eastern war time place the hotel bethlehem grand ballroom price onty one dollar and fifty cents but if you are as broke as ever you may come after the dinner and watch the mam attraction of the evening absolutely free of charge nov 4 arcadia dance shows over 200 profit the arcadia fall prom held nov 4th 1944 showed a fine profit of 213.75 when the final expense and receipt accounts were balanced up and appropriate ly subtracted this bit of good news was announced by v war ren fox ch.e feb 45 treasurer of arcadia this dance is but one of the few successful social affairs that the lehigh student governing body has put on in recent semester officers of arcadia who also acted on the dance committee were bill day bus june 45 bill boothby 1.e feb 46 and bob treser ch e june 45 the banquet which is sponsored by the five-man committee will be highlighted by a demonstration by dr henry gerald on mind over matter dr gerald's per formance may be compared to the stunts of the renowned dunninger all those who attend may be sure of a good time and a good feed all lehigh students the entire faculty and many alumni are ex pected to come tickets may be purchased at the supply bureau the arcadia office or from the respective living group heads the if council has decided to close all fraternity kitchens on wednesday evening be sure to show up at the ban quet as it will probably be the only all-university gathering of the semester nov 4 arcadia dance shows over 200 profit health dept will give t b tests dispensary prepares for shots and x-rays a tuberculosis test is now under way at the dispensary to see just how lehigh students stand with the dreaded disease of tubercu losis the test consists of two skin injections and a chest x-ray every student will be given one injection for those whose reac tion is negative there will be a second shot which will be slight ly stronger than the first if the result of this one is also negative there is no danger of the student's having the disease a list will be made of all those who have a positive result on the first injection and a similar list of all who have a negative reac tion on the first but a positive one on the second those on these lists will be given chest x-rays to determine whether they are really subject to tuberculosis the reading to find out whether the reaction of the skin test is positive or negative is taken 48 hours after the shot has been will be given this test and the given all undergraduates of lehigh co-operation of everyone is asked by dr keck and his staff if any student cannot keep his appoint ment he should get in touch with the health office to have his date changed b & w epitome submit audits a meeting of the board of pub lications was held last wednesday at four o'clock in dean congdon's office the meeting's purpose was to discuss the financial status and the general conduct of all under graduate publications on the uni versity campus the audits of the brown and white and of the epitome for 1944 were submitted to the coun cil for an understanding of the financial status on the books of these publications it was found that the epitome because of difficulties of operations such as high costs and less material and equipment suffered a loss of about s6oo for 1944 as against a surplus for 1943 the board of publications com posed of the chairman in ex continued on page 4 the brown and white is trying to minimize its losses since there is no means of stabilized in come at present statements will have to be suspended until some indication of the status is shown this bordering on a loss is due to three facts 1 circulation has been cut through the intervention of the war 2 printing costs have gone up and 3 there has been a decrease in the student body the loss is about 400 a semester casting announced for m & c's play the tentative casting of the next mustard and cheese produc tion as announced by professor rights for william sareyan's play the time of your life is as follows joe al desiring parts in this production should report to professor rights at the first re hearsal next friday chapel sees glee club the combined lehigh and mo ravian glee clubs christmas pro gram was presented in the chapel on sunday afternoon december 10th recording the first appear ance of lehigh's glee club this semester the simple beauty of the serv ice has been a lehigh tradition for many years as an annual event this program has assumed a well deserved position of prom inence on the lehigh calendar peace on earth good will toward men words which seem to have died in the hearts of men seemed once more to live during this hour the christmas story was read by dr claude g beardslee inter spersed by appropriate christmas carols in which the audience par ticipated with the glee clubs the glee clubs were well re ceived and the university chapel well filled the performance began with a candlelight procession and ended in the same manner lending the necessary touch of solemnity to the occasion the concert was under the di rection of dr shields who should be well complimented on the per fomnance sigma chi shortens social probation the social probation period of the alpha rho chapter of the sigma chi fraternity has been revised so that active probation will end in february 1945 and tentative probation will continue until june 1945 formerly the active period extended to june sigma chi protested the orig inal decision of the disciplinary committee on the grounds that it had not been represented at the meeting and therefore did not have a chance to present its case a second hearing was held fri day december 8 with paul b scarff bus june 45 and william h schwemlein m.ej feb 46 representing sigma chi two local alumni mr robert e laramy and mr charles k zug were also present sigma chi based its appeal on the fact that a peace-time penalty becomes much more severe when applied during war time they also showed that if the original decision had been enforced it could have resulted in forcing al pha rho to close for the next semester members of the disciplinary committee who were present in cluded dean congdon professor edgar heisler riley professor allen jennings barthold and willard s boothby 1.e oct 45 fall banquet of tau bete following the initiation of sev en men tau beta pi and pi tau sigma national honorary engi neering societies held their fall initiation banquet it took place at lamberton hall on wednesday dec 6 with a dinner of fillet mig non as one of the high spots of the evening those initiated into tau beta pi were edward manning e.e robert curtis e.p and lido lacocca 1.e all of the class of june 45 also david e simon ch.e and dick craig e.p class of feb 46 the new members of pi tau sigma are lido lacocca and joseph rengert both i e.s from the class of june 45 the banquet closed with the initiates of both societies deliver ing short addresses in apprecia tion of the honor bestowed upon them the toast master was robert w mayer president of tau beta pi and the speaker of the evening was gilbert e doan who ad dressed the members on the challenge of youth lehigh valley asce meets ' the lehigh valley chapter of the american society of civil en gineers met at the hotel bethle hem monday evening december 11 1944 to elect officers and dis cuss engineering opportunities in pennsylvania m o fuller uni versity instructor was elected to the position of secretary-treasurer for the coming year of 1945 the speaker for the evening was mark b owen a director of the asce committee on post-war construction who discussed penn sylvania's place in the vast engi neering program to come after the war pennsylvania has been listed fifth among the leading states in the country contemplat ing post-war construction plans which will require huge expendi tures of money for both private and public projects said mr owen the speaker in his capacity as an asce committee director on post-war construction stated that this committee is acting to encour age private as well as public post-war projects and that al ready a valuable set of bids on post-war projects are prepared in concluding mr owen disclosed that congress has enacted a bill which is intended to stimulate post-war building by fostering loans to municipalities for engi neering work other officers elected by the so ciety for the approaching year in cluded h w lawson president r a wistrich vice-president and j a pasterius second vice president chem society feasts tonite look out you hardened masters of the noble art of failing hapless chemistry students the tables are about to be turned and you who for twelve full months have held the upper hand are about to find out all about yourselves see yourselves as your students see and hear you at the chemistry society's annual christmas ban quet this evening at lambert hall at seven o'clock on the menu — for you faculty men who are courageous enough to attend will be fattened before the slaughter — are such rare items as steaks for all with potatoes peas on t?ie side the repast is headed by a fruit cup and tagging along at the end will be apple pie a-la-mode this will be followed by the annual visit of santa claus to the faculty members by the courtesy of their ever-loving stu dents following santa's hasty depart ure to points north the meeting will adjourn to the lecture room in me chem building
