extra-curricular ac tivities 11l health is his reason the positions resigned include the chairmanship of the five-mai committee on classes editor-in-chief of the brown and white anc president of omicron delta kappa mayer will continue to hold hi offices as proctor as drinker house and president of tau beta pi bob's statement submitted to this paper's staff will explain the reason for these resignations on the advice of my doctor i am dropping out of extra-curri cular activity at lehigh continued poor health for the past few sem esters has forced me to take this step one which i regret deeply in resigning the editorship of the brown and white i wish to reaffirm my approval of the pa per's editorial policy especially as it was expressed in last week's front page editorial and to ex press the hope that it is contin ued in the future mayer came to lehigh in sep tember 1942 he had played an active role in his high school's so cial program after leaving read ing high bob still remained inter ested in extra-curricular work his first thought in this field of activity was of journalism in five semesters he worked his way to the top position as editor-in-chief through his tennis and football vol lii no 20 bethlehem pa thursday november 30 1944 price 5 cents collegians to play for sports dance athletic letters to be presented at season's debut for collegians the five-man committee is sponsoring a sports appreciation dance december 2 from nine to twelve p m in grace hall music will be furnished by the lehigh collegians appearing for the first time this semester the dance is being held in order to show the student body's appre ciation for the many hours of gridiron and soccer work put in by these respective teams the collegians including frank anderson charles tuttle dick mertz dick bodine saxes fritz stocker marty kaplin trom bones bob jones tim dennis bill welliver trumpets and dave simmons piano the collegians have been fortunate this fall in acquiring tim dennis in the ca pacity of arranger tim has done some fine work for the collegians and also for harry romig's band the special event of the evening will be the awarding of the 9 o'clock the date is december 2 the place grace hall lehigh holiday banquet set the hotel bethlehem has def initely been chosen as the scene of the lehigh university banquet on december 20 it has been an nounced by the lehigh five-man committee following the plan used for last spring's banquet the student - concert lecture funds will be used to obtain a speaker who as yet has not been engaged the last banquet was held in the spring of 1944 with dr f alex ander magoun associate profes sor of human relations at massa chusetts institute of technology as its guest speaker and as all l.ehigh men present will recall it was a tremendous success the scl sees no reason why this ban quet should not turn out to be equally or even more successful since it is to be the first and also the last such event in quite a while the fullest enthusiasm and cooperation on the part of every student is an absolute necessity to achieve this merit however the best way for students to support the program and insure them selves an educational evening is to get tickets early and make all plans to attend the banquet tick ets are a dollar and a half the interfraternity council has an nounced that all fraternity kitch ens will be closed on that evening to debate air question delta omicron theta honorary debating society will be host to a debate between dickinson and le high this friday evening at 8:00 o'clock in room 466 packard lab the topic is resolved that we should adopt an international code for freedom of the airways similar to the international code of the high seas al goodman and richard macadams taking the negative side of the proposition will represent lehigh all students are invited to at tend the debate and take part in the ensuing discussion because of the post-war importance which will be attached to this topic the debate should prove interesting and enlightening at present d o t members are busy drawing up plans for a debating society to include all interested colleges in this vicinity when this league is organized a regular schedule of debates will be followed such an organization should prove to be a boom to de bating throughout the lehigh val ley muhlenberg has already sig nified its willingness to join the league and responses from other schools are expected we salute you editor mayer dear bob we on the brown and white take this opportunity to express our regret that it has been neces sary for you to resign your post as editor and to express our deep gratitude for the work you have done on this paper when you took your position as editor last june you and your staff set up an eight point pro gram this platform was a very ambitious one and we would like to restate it here 1 to preserve all student activities 2 to stimulate all student activi ties 3 to encourage students to join some living group and to get all living groups to function for the university 4 to bring lehigh to the atten tion of alumni and to those who have attended lehigh but have not finished 5.t0 focus and guide student opin ion on university matters 6 to support and preserve the best of lehigh traditions 7 to encourage the growth of le high as an intellectual center for the lehigh valley 8 to broaden and to awaken the interest of lehigh students in affairs of the outside world you have done much to take us along the road to accomplish ing the above platform through the brown and white you have helped organizations which were inactive get back on their feet you have helped those who were having a hard time continuing keep going for this we thank you for the engineering supple ment which you ran in the paper — a supplement which did no little good toward bringing the students of lehigh to the attention of the alumni and the alumni to the attention of the student body — we also thank you when you took over the editor ship of the brown and white the editorial policy had been criti cized by many as being much too destructive and not constructive such criticisms have absolutely ceased and your policy of dis cussing editorial material from both sides and then making sug gestions has been appreciated by all campus groups for this we also thank you you have taken a vigorous and firm stand on all matters of cam pus interest working always for the betterment of students and student government you have done much to further and you could not continue to carry your policies through the difficult days still to come thanks again bob and good luck the staff photo club holds big meet m groven speaks the lehigh photographic club was sadly disappointed last thurs day nov 9 when its projected joint meeting with the students of moravian college failed to mater alize due to the mid semester tests at moravian after viewing a number of ko dachrome slides shown by mr millard groven of the bethlehem photocolor club the club adjourn ed to the balcony of packard lab oratory where refreshments were served the club will hold a meeting 7:30 thursday nov 16 in drown hall to complete plans for the forthcoming trip to franklin in stitute in philadelphia mr charles e denis will speak on the profes sional aspects of photography and the technique of printing and en larging cyanide holds frosh court cyanide the junior honorary society in a meeting held last monday night at 7:30 in dr beardslee's office in drown hall held a court for violators of fresh man regulations several of the offending frosh were brought be fore the tribunal and impressed with the fact that the freshman regulations held for them as well as the rest of the class of june 1947 freshman regulations which incidentally end with the begin ning of the christmas vacation on december 23 require that all frosh wear brown ties brown socks and their dinks at all times except sundays on campus and in bethlehem the rest of the meeting was given to discussion of the classifi cation of faculty alumni student committees cyanide is making a study of the different committees of the university who is on them why they meet are the minutes made public and many other pertinent questions this study has been in progress for the past four semesters but was given its impetus by the group of last sem ester twenty other universities and colleges have been consulted and similar organizations discuss cd when the survey is finished the findings will be made public and lehigh's organization will find improvements to be had lights out even green leaves can't produce without light and so the brown and white is late this week because of the storm on monday eve ning two wires in front of the delta tau delta house fell resulting in a lack of power for drown hall home of the b&w since they are not known for a cat-like ability to see in the dark our disgusted re porters and staff-men after waiting anxiously for an hour for the lights to return finally gave up and closed shop for the night we ask you to forgive us guaranteeing that the next time we will be on hand with flashlights and candles to all those men who have been picking the brown and white up at the printer's in the future the paper will be available only at drown hall
