the brown and white tuesday september 17 1991 lehigh university vol 99 no 4 b&w photo by jason stanford emergency personnel respond to an accident at packer avenue and new street robert graver 19 a bethlehem resident was taken to st luke's hospital's intensive care unit after his motorcycle crashed into the side o1 a car driven by scott r johnson 93 last thursday afternoon graver has since been discharged pledge program to help avoid hazing athletic director seeks to regulate tailgating parties by marc j goldstein brown and white assigning news editor football game tailgates soon may have to be registered and placed in designated places if the athletic department's pro posed changes are adopted by the univer sity the proposed changes are necessary to provide a safer and more comfortable environment at pre-game activities ac cording to joe sterrett director of ath letics we are trying to refine our ability to enforce reasonable accountability for behavior sterrett said i don't want well-behaved student groups penalized for the isolated incidents of some groups sterrett proposes registering tailgates and placing them in designated places no more than two cars will be permitted in the area this according to sterrett will reduce the risk to cars and promote a easier flow of both pedestrians and cars tailgates will not begin before 10 a.m and there will be a heavy emphasis placed on prompt game attendance all home football games will begin at 1 p.m there will be no confusion as to when the game starts this year sterrett said in the past game time changed to accommodate alumni functions daylight-saving time and other activities security guards and athletic person nel according to the proposal will patrol to identify problems sterrett said he hopes that having the tailgates registered in defined places will allow those people to get to problem areas more effectively if we register what we are doing as groups it allows us still to go as groups and to publicize that we are going to have a tailgate but the group defines accounta bility there is someone who is going to be in charge sterrett said see tailgate page 3 council to come up with a proposal to bring to president likins robeson said ifc and panhel are talk ing to president likins the dean of stu dents and the director of student life about the parameters of the new pledg ing program the new program will be put into effect this semester but the major question is exactly what the eight weeks covers they must decide when the eight weeks begin whether vacations pacing breaks and 4 o'clock quiz weeks count toward see fraternity page 12 by amy mulligan brown and white news writer no more year-long pledge programs all fraternities will undergo a mandatory eight-week pledge program this semes ter president peter likins said in a letter to lehigh's greek leaders last may hazing both as a concept and a prac tice is simply antithetical to the values of lehigh and the greek system and must be eliminated his plan to eliminate hazing included a spring rush minimum grade point average requirements and an eight-week pledge program bob robeson assistant dean of stu dents for greek affairs said ultimately president likins needs to do what is best for the university...but he has asked for the advice and input from the fraternity system on the best way to handle this robeson said he believes the new pro gram should not be too tough for the panhellenic council to adopt sororities already conduct spring rush and a mini mum gpa is mandatory for all female rushees also their pledging period is not much more than eight weeks he is working with the interfraternity satellite beams graduate courses to 28 campuses across country the international market by making college courses accessible to long-distance audiences we want to promote private-sector produc tivity through public delivery of state-of-the-art education programs said tuscher we also want to promote change in the american educational system by providing educational services to the region state and the nation see satellite page 1 1 by chris dolan brown and white news writer a new 500,000 telecommunications facility in lacocca hall at mountaintop campus broadcasts graduate-level courses via satellite to 28 cam puses and nearly 400 receiving sites at high-tech corporations across the united states according to leroy tuscher professor of educational technology the new facility will help the united states become more competitive in b&w photo by samantha ganz leroy tuscher inspects the satellite control equipment gloria hrn bgfcer university libraries rm.522a fairchild/martinoale libr ng.ooba science pages lehigh sperm research page 7
