the five-man committee is spon soring a sports appreciation dance december 2 from nine to twelve p m in grace hall music will be supplied by the newly organ ized 1944 edition of the lehigh collegians in their first public ap pearance on the campus the feature attraction of the dance will be the presentation of athletic awards in football and soccer by coaches leo prender gast and billy sheridan the purpose of the dance is to allow the students to show their appreciation of the many hours of practice and battle on the gridiron and the soccer field that some of the boys here at lehigh have gone through all men of lehigh are requested to attend admission will be free the members of the lehigh col legians have been practicing dili gently for the big event and they show promise of presenting an en joyable evening to ail who attend the mellow sax of dick mertz the sweet trombone of martin kaplin plus stanley on the guitar jones and dennis on trumpets will add up to one of the best mu sical products this campus has seen in a great while be sure to bring your date to grace hall saturday evening de cember 2 to cheer lehigh's foot ball and soccer heroes as they re ceive their awards and dance to the melodious tones of the lehigh collegians come one come all remember the admission is free the time is nine o'clock the date december second the place grace hall rally features pajamas skits lehigh spirit received a shot in the arm last friday at the pre lafayette game rally the torch light parade following the rally in the gym had everyone's spirits at a peak when the parade end ed with the singing of the alma mater at the flag pole no one wanted to stop but wanted to con tinue over the bridge to serenade moravian at the dean's request however the paraders halted as previously scheduled the freshmen came out attired in many varicolored pajamas in the first pa jama parade since 1942 bill boothby president of cyan ide acted as master of ceremonies and kept the program rolling leo prendergast gave another of his inspiring pre-game talks which was followed by the singing of lehigh will shine tonight af ter this paul franz recently ap pointed assistant director of ad missions talked on the alumni view on wartime lehigh a movie was shown of football thrills of 1943 which was followed by a short talk by pete kitson captain of the football team of the four skits presented the judges called the characterization of the lafayette leopard by the kappa alpha dog the best there were three others including sig ma chis which humorized a re porter visiting lafayette delta tau delta's which dramatized the death of podgorski and tau delta phi's which dramatized leo talk ing to the football team at half time after the skits billy sheridan spoke for a short while after which the pa jama parade started the cheerleaders and band did much to enliven the rally lehigh club meets again the 51st meeting of the phila delphia lehigh club was held last thursday night at bookbinders restaurant in philadelphia the club was founded in 1893 and has met every thursday before the last lafayette game of the sea son a crowd of 40 attending this latest get-together included len shick editor of the lehigh alum ni bulletin robert herrick alum ni secretary and paul franz asst dean of admissions the meeting was opened by tom conley kappa sigma and turned over to chairman pop shipherd delta tau delta who gave a small welcoming talk the chairman introduced billy sheridan lehigh s wrestling coach who spoke of lehigh today and the tough proposition the war continued on naffp a.s odks discuss athletic policy lehigh university's athletic policy was the main topic of dis cussion at a recent meeting of omicron delta kappa the nation al honor society for seniors the members of the lehigh chapter which is presided over by bob mayer ch.e june 1945 indulged in a heated debate on the question of alumni student grants these scholarships were instituted in 1939 to encourage men of athletic and scholastic ability to attend lehigh but were discontinued in 1943 for the dura tion of the war in connection with this subject it was proposed that some means other than out right grants of money be set up to attract men of athletic capa bilities who live in the lehigh valley also discussed was the feasi bility of eliminating classes after four o'clock for any man out for an intercollegiate sport during the football season for example some of the players were able to have only one hour of practice daily due to their having classes until five o'clock a three-man committee com posed of mayei as chairman v warren fox ch.e june 1945 and paul j franz assistant di rector of admissions was appoint ed to study these problems and report its findings to the society at the next meeting which will be sometime in december chem society culls plans for traditional xmas party plans are now underway for this year's lehigh student chemical society christmas banquet this is the one event to which chems and chem e's look forward it is the only time that these students can openly express their opinion of their department the banquets have been held annually for the past 33 years they consist of a big dinner and a program of songs and skits the dinners are planned under the guiding eye of prof diefenderfer one of the authorities on lots of good food the program is arranged and given by the senior members of the society with no faculty supervision influencing the quality of the skits the dinner committees have al ways provided delicious food in ample quantity this year the committee is planning a steak din ner with all the fixings at lam berton hall formerly the ban quets were held in the masonic hall but there are not enough students to make the rental of this hall possible after the dinner a few of the faculty members will give short responses the group will then sing a series of songs pertaining to the department and the season when the songs have been com pleted everyone will adjourn to the main lecture room in the chemistry building it is during this next portion of the program that the seniors reign the main item of the program is a series of skits which satir ize the professors and other members of the department the skits describe each member ac continued on page 4 physics society revives at meeting this week dr elliot cheney will speak on occupations in physics at the first meeting of the long dormant physics society to be held thurs day nov 30 at 7:30 p m dr cheney will also act as ad visor to the society and will di vide his time between this and a national research council proj ect the current president is bob curtis june 45 and dick craig feb 46 and dick greene feb 46 are treasurer and secretary respectively 25 companies offer jobs through the agency of the placement bureau the alumni office has recently released a folder of letters from 25 leading manufacturing companies through out the united states offering post-war jobs to lehigh alumni returning from the wars the letters were sent out by the personnel directors of the various firms with little stress being laid upon experience for most of them realize the impossibility of the men in service getting experience in their particular field they also waived most age requirements and in the few places where they were mentioned the ages ranged from 23 to 34 years of age some of the salaries offered ranged as high as 5000 but in cautioning the lehigh men not to be overly tempted by a rosy pres ent mr e robins morgan di rector of the placement trative committee has turned down the second straight prac tically unanimous student petition in two years 250 students out of 336 signed a petition to get a thanksgiving vacation the petition organized by arcadia asked for this vaca tion because it is impossible for anyone living outside of a 50 mile radius to go home for a thanks giving which is the last one to be spent at home for many students about to enter the armed serv ices the petition was submitted to dean palmer who promised the arcadia officers that he would submit the petition to the entire faculty for approval however the administrative committee composed of deans palmer car others and callen alone voted on the petition and turned it down unanimously the committee cited three reasons for the denial claim ing that most students would vio continued on page 4 student wishes again ignored twice within the past week student wishes morale and enthusiasm have been trampled deeper into the mire of discouragement and disil lusionment we refer of course to the campusing of the traditional pa jama parade and to the denial of the student petition for the dis missal of classes over this coming weekend we fully appreciate the fact that the parade after the rally last week could not be allowed to go through town without having arrangements made in advance with the city police department and fire depart ment but we see no reason why student leaders should not have been allowed to make such arrangements they made a very definite at tempt to do this but were told by dean congdon that such an ex pression of youthful exuberance would not be permitted by the university congdon's reply at the request of one of our student leaders dean congdon has written a letter to this newspaper in which he attempts to give the reasons for this stand read his letter on page two of this issue and see if you can comprehend his reasons we must confess we are def initely at a loss we must take exception to one statement in the letter most emphat ically and that is that the reasonableness of his position has been ap preciated by student leaders now with but possibly one exception we have found that the student leaders consulted took argument with the policies outlined in the paragraph containing the statement what about it monday afternoon likewise the administrative committee made the announcement that arcadia's petition signed by nigh onto three hun dred students to cancel all classes this weekend had been unanimously refused the reasons they gave were three first transportation facili ties would be overcrowded second our accelerated program would be hindered third the soldiers in the foxholes get no vacation we weep for shame before such a dazzling array of insurmountable reasons against our dastardly request we the students of lehigh university wilt and hang our heads in shame we failed to see that such a move would jam trains and buses as the mammoth enrollment of three hundred moved out of town of course the fact that a large majority of these stu dents live close to the campus and the fact that practically all of the rest will merely cut weekend classes makes no difference to the ad ministration also we failed to realize that our accelerated program would be dealt a death blow by the granting of our request other reputable universities perm perm state and michigan to mention a few are closing shop for the weekend in the firm belief that their accelerated programs will survive but then lehigh is different the third reason advanced seems more important to our way of thinking we know that the soldiers overseas will not be able to take time out to come home but we can't seem to recall soldiers complain ing about college students having a mere weekend off to visit families if the truth were known would not they be in favor of such a move it must be realized at this time too that it is we who are now request ing a vacation who will be in the foxholes in a few short months faculty also ignored and yet our petition was refused — not by the faculty to whom it was addressed but by the administration committee composed of the three deans in spite of the fact
