b&w photo by ross bell a young girl gets a taste of mondu at the international bazaar sunday bazaar offers lehigh community an international taste of world by shenid bhayroo brown and white news writer imagine delicious chocolate cake from fran ce colorful minature dolls from russia coffee from turkey spicy aromatic foods from india korea and china and rich bassy music from latin america all these exotic sights smells and sounds were blended into a carnival-like atmosphere at the international month bazaar sunday afternoon at maginnes hall organized by the organization of interna tional students and scholars and the cultural exchange committee the event featured 20 different cultural exhibits and stalls where everything from spicy food to colorful clothing and art were sold bijan marjan chairperson of the cultural exchange committee a group representing all international organizations at lehigh said the purpose of the bazaar was to bring together the international and the lehigh communities marjan is a graduate student from italy we think that this event will make students more aware of the world around them and the large resource base for interational culture here at lehigh he said marjan said the event served as an entertain ment and educational experience according to gisela nansteel immigration coordinator at the international office there are 475 international undergraduate and grad ute students at lehigh as well as many scholars and professors from many different countries the rich cultural variety was reflected in the many different people that attended the event people from europe east asia the far east latin america and africa formed a patchwork of cultural diversity their many varieties of food clothing arts and crafts were all avail the brown and white vol 98 no 42 tuesday april 16 1991 lehigh university see holocaust page 13 war 11 the program included kellenbach's speech a ques tion and answer session a short movie and an interfaith service the holocaust was a series of events and decisions that came out of normal people what happened did not hap pen in an ignorant uneducat ed country kellenbach said one of the most important things about remembering the holocaust she said was that the society that fostered the holocaust was not that different from that of the unit ed states today she emphasized the human memorial service speaker remember holocaust victims by marc j.goldstein brown and white news writer social apathy about dis crimination that gave rise to the holocaust are still present in the united states today according to katharina van kellenbach adjunct lecturer of religion studies kellenbach emphasized the human origin and extent of the holocaust during the yom ha'shoah memorial pro gram thursday evening sponsored by the hillel soc iety the newman center and the chaplain's office the yom ha'shoah service was held to remember the exter mination of more than six million jews during world said he believes some over looked issues concerning bethlehem's permanent resi dents need to be addressed in order to keep bethlehem at the forefront of american municipalities if lehigh students want to be taken seriously i on issues such as south side park ing and limited student housing they should show concern where it counts at the ; polls timothy russo candidate for city council among these issues is the large unfunded pension liability accrued by beth lehem covert borrowing from future generations to pay for current services this will in see russo page 4 lu graduate student enters city council race by john morris brown and white news writer a lehigh university grad uate has declared his can didacy in the race for a seat on the bethlehem city council timothy russo an econ omics teaching assistant is the third republican nom inated for a seat on the beth lehem city council russo a former u.s air force navigator said leh igh university is an integral part of the bethlehem com munity but most often a part that doesn't participate in the decision process if lehigh students want to be taken seriously on issues such as south side parking and limited student housing they should show concern where it counts at the polls he said russo sees his candidacy as a tremendous opportunity for the lehigh community to show its resolve and to realize the potential power that we wield russo's republican plat form is not limited solely to the lehigh community he able for purchase everything from a 50 cent fortune cookie to a 100 japanese sword were on sale as people milled about sampling the exotic food or simply feasting their eyes on the brightly colored garments and artifacts they were entertianed by salsa music from synthesis a band from the latin american musicians association the event was attended by president peter likins provost alan pense and other lehigh faculty and staff congressional representa tive don ritter and a representative from the bethlehem area mayor's office also attended the event likins said events like the international bazaar are intended to celebrate the richest dimension of university life we need to recognize the wonderful dimen sion of international culture he said anne thomas international students and scholars coordinator said the event was held to facilitate a sharing of international under standing in the lehigh community we hope that this event will serve as a cultural exchange where the international community can share their cultures she said zarli sein a freshman from sinagpore said international events should be held more often to facilitate cultural understanding in the lehigh community it is a sad thing though that many lehigh students who should be here are not here he said russel nel a senior from south africa said that internationalism was an important aspect of the non-academic learning process of being at a university learning is a two-way process that does not only take place when you are reading a book he said interaction with students from other cultures is also an education science the human genome project page 11
