interesting histories of all lehigh student organizations the present arcadia is the result of the merger of the lehigh union cab inet and the arcadia this merger took place in 1938 in order to insure a more compact and therefore a more efficient and powerful student governing body prior to the merger it was planned to unite arcadia the lehigh is to represent the student body with the administration to direct all student government affairs which were previously managed by the original arcadia and the lehigh union and the mainten ance of a central office for under graduate organizations the central office made avail continued on page 3 dick smith playing for big fall prom on saturday nov 4 arcadia will present its much-publicized fall prom the five man com mittee has engaged dick smith and his orchestra one of the most popular aggregations in the lehigh valley the maestro is by no means new to lehigh as he played at the spring dance and was both appreciated and success ful arcadia is planning to charge three dollars per couple or civil ians and 1.80 for servicemen on ivionday october 30 however the price of the civilian tickets will xise to 3.60 this it is hoped will alleviate a last minute rush furloughs for the army reser vists begin on the 28th of octo ber and end on the 6th of no vember this will probably mean that a great many of the boys will be out of town on the date of the dance however those who can possibly attend are urged to do so semi-formal the dance will be semi-formal with corsages optional and the af fair will be the only one of its kind at least until christmas a large number of the fra ternity houses are planning to make the weekend an even more gala occasion with houseparties oeing added to the schedule of events this of course includes a football game in the afternoon it is important to note that a petition must be received by the dean of undergraduates not later than 12 noon monday oct 30 1944 which must contain the names and addresses of the lady guests and their escorts and the signatures of the upper classmen will be held responsible in each case rutgers game lehigh's fast but inexperienced ball club should be nearing its peak by then and promises to give rutgers a hard fight a fine houseparty crowd should be on hand to cheer the boys registration gets bigger and better according to the latest reports 326 men have passed through the registrar's checking clerks 298 on oct 18 the first day of registra tion and 28 since then of these registrants 97 were new men in the class of june 47 however 103 freshmen have been admitted and the other six are expected to register some time this week eighteen of the registrants were returning veterans seven of whom were here last semester there is no data yet about the number of students registered in each cur riculum the registrar seemed quite gratified over the progress which is being made at lehigh this se mester registrar g b curtis was very pleased with the efficiency of this year's registrar's team which was comprised of eight checking clerks and several other men who handed out class cards checked on the checkers and kept things running smoothly new epitome staff to meet monday the 1945 epitome which will be published some time next june will go into production fol lowing an organization meeting in the brown and white office next monday night at 8 p m there are positions open on the editorial business and photo staffs for any one in the university previous experience is not necessary just show up in the basement of drown hall next monday night under graduate cooperation is needed to keep this publication one of the oldest and most traditional parts of lehigh life up to its usual high standards union cabinet and the interfra ternity council however after 8 months of investigation by student faculty and administration rep resentatives it was decided to merge only the first two organ ization since each group's work was so varied the new organiza tion was to deal with all student problems and the if council was to remain a separate entity to deal with fraternity problems the new arcadia was created on march 25 1938 by a vote of the joint student-faculty committee on student activities the vote was in full approval with the recommendations jointly submit ted by the old arcadia and the lehigh union for the merger of arcadia and the union into a sin gle student government organiza tion with the consent of the arca dia-union merger committee the approval of the faculty-student committee on student activities and the vote of the student body the new organization on may 3 became known as arcadia the full name arcadia of lehigh university student governing body was determined at the first meeting of the new arcadia cab pack ard lab auditorium because of a heavy rain the scheduled torch light parade was not held after a short band selection bob mayer introduced the guest speaker john s ford varsity football man in 1927 the topic of his talk was sidelights on le high history mr ford recalled some of the famous lehigh-lafay ette conflicts of the past and of fered some sidelights on coach leo prendergast next on complete for arcadia prom frosh dinks and ties back again special army exams held for gi unit achievement tests held oct 20 and 21 on friday and saturday oct 20 and 21 the air corps reser vists at lehigh along with air corps reservists in every college and university in the country took the army achievement tests in physics mathematics chemistry and english the subjects they have been pursuing during the current semester the examinations are given by the army at the end of every sem ester in order to find out which colleges have been most thorough in their teaching whether each man has passed or failed the course for the semester will not be determined by the tests how ever the results will be given to the professors who may if they wish use them solely as a final exam ination in connection with an other final examination or not at all using a final examination of their own in an interview with colonel easterday it was found that the present semester will end on the 28th of october a seven day va cation will end on nevember 6th when classes will resume all men are expected back except of course those who have failed to pass their courses cyanide - men to enforce frosh series of frosh regulations similar to those abandoned after the fall of 1942 in addition to the hats seal brown ties and socks will also be required apparel for first semester men the brown dinks will go on sale at the arcadia office on the second floor of drown hall tomor row morning at 1.50 per hat reg ulation ties and socks are on sale at the supply bureau profits from the sale of the hats go into the arcadia treasury and into the class employment fund the class employment fund is an aid to stu dents who are deserving of help from the standpoint of both need and scholarship a lehigh motto . . . those of you who attended the lafayette rally last friday evening heard coach leo prendergast mentor of the 1944 engineers nuke a statement one which we deem worthy of being adopted as the motto of our wartime university with this idea in mind we pre sent it to you for your approval said coach prendergast even a moron can tear something down it takes a man with intelligence and drive to build something up and really make it go let this statement sink in which shall it be these times are times to build and your help is needed to do it
