preparation for the english depart ment since the college of business and economics moved out of drown to the rauch business center last fall the department has been asking for more space for a couple of years said edward gallagher chairman of the english depart ment in maginnes we have three and four teachers in offices that were designed to b&w photo by sean mcgowan drown hall under renovations the brown and white lehigh university tuesday february 5 1991 vol 98 no 27 explosion knocks out power parties halted the service was temporarily restored during the night by rerouting the power at about 1:00 a.m and was permanently re paired in the morning the fraternity parties on the hill were interrupted by the blackout naomi sigel 94 who was at phi sigma kappa said that when the lights went out people didn't really realize what had hap pened because it was already dark it was chaotic on the stairways but when the emer gency lights went out the brothers started breaking up the party dax said that it is not a policy for the campus police to break up parties during a blackout to each other to find a way out of the building bergeron said this had nothing to do with the explosion but rather a malfunction of the generator system during a blackout the security is beefed up throughout the campus and we are looking specifically for vandalism and theft because they are the most prevalent during those times said chief of campus police eugene dax the campus police patrolled in cars with spotlights to deter vandalism when we get a call like that we get in a security-type mode and our response de pends on what buildings are affected dax said that there were no particular problems or incidents due to the blackout by marc goldstein brown & white news writer an explosion on a power line poll lo cated below the lookout near alpha tau omega fraternity knocked out the power on the campus on friday night for approxi mately three hours at approximately 10 12 p.m the cam pus system was taken down when a light ening arrester had exploded or blown up for unknown reasons said donald bergeron the assistant director of physical plant a lightening arrester is a device used to ground lightening strikes that hit the power poles bergeron said the explosion was not a usual thing to happen and most likely a technical failure the loss of power disabled the heating system and phone service to the buildings and set off the fire alarms throughout the dorms the heat was lost because power was also halted to the central heating and re frigeration building located across from the rauch business center although the heat resumed when the power returned the phone system was not operable until the next morning when the system was reset although reserve lights did come on in most buildings the richards dorm was completely black the fire alarm went off first then all the power shut off " said kelly melen 94 a resident of richards no hall lights were lit in the building people were holding on in search of the goddess through art the unique works of irma palabi francis a grenada-born sculptor are on display in the girdler lounge of the university center oshun right represents a beautiful priestess who was deeply involved in the mysteries olokun below was a wealthy merchant of jewels beads necklaces and rare objects crackdown on baltics signals hardline soviet groups that re-entered the area have made many wonder whether the states freedom will shortly come to an end the current crisis began when soviet troops were sent to lithuania in mid-january to make those who failed to register for the draft do so immediately if the draft dodgers failed to enlist the troops were to take action when no movement was made by the draft dodgers the soviet troops opened fire at a press headquarters and took over a television station similiar attacks have taken place in neighboring lativa leaving a total of 20 deaths last march the baltic states had freedom in their sight see renovations page 9 accomodate one gallagher said in addition 10 new profess ors were hired this fall making the space problem an even more pressing issue patricia chase director of physical plan ning said there is a 475,000 budget which will be used for renovations including a renovation of the main lobby new floor cover ings additional shelving and a new coat of paint air conditioning will also be installed gallagher said he sees many advantages to the move once the renovations are complete the building will be a comfortable place for students to learn and a nice place
